Today is a bank holiday and the kids decided to play together all morning. Yay!

I have

Cleaned 3 toilets and 1 bathroom floor/ surfaces

Wiped the kitchen windowsills and all the surfaces in the living room and dining room

Changed 2 beds

Ordered a shower screen for kids bathroom

RunningKatie · 27/05/2024 21:39

I love it when the dc play together @Aria999 - and on a bank holiday, bliss! Our two are 11 and 13 so playing isn't so much of a thing but I love watching them chat together when we take ddog out.

I've been on a real spring clean today, bathroom floors scrubbed, washing out (then rained on), weeding done, bit of ironing done.
We've also been out to a National Trust place, being terribly British we even had to queue for the car park!
Now I have a gin and am catching up on Springwatch.

Aria999 · 27/05/2024 22:31

Sounds perfect @RunningKatie !

Mumtobabyhavoc · 27/05/2024 23:07

Not much to post about; just trying to survive here. Havoc has taken to waking up and waking me up about 1.5-2 hours earlier than usual and then waking up baby.
Seems bank holiday across the pond and Federal holiday down in the States today. Enjoy your long weekends, everyone. ☺️

Frostandfrogs · 28/05/2024 07:38

Ah @Mumtobabyhavoc you're really in the trenches with such little ones 💕 I hope you have support!

@Aria999 and @RunningKatie I still find great pleasure in watching my 'chidren' hanging out happily together now! I love that they get on so well, although they lead very different lives.

Today I am doing a belated flylady blah, as I spent much of yesterday with my nose in a book. It was really nice! I also need to sweep and weed our patio.

Hope you all have a great day 💐

Peridot1 · 28/05/2024 08:46

Good morning all.

I am back from a week in Ireland which was really nice. Although slept in four different beds/locations in 7 nights so was very glad to get back to my own bed and not living out of a suitcase.

Was planning on some gardening today but it’s miserable so plan is to empty and put away the suitcases I brought back. I brought one back for DS as well as my own. So washing to be done and put away. Presents to find homes for.

I also have a large ironing pile I need to start tackling.

Have a great day all.

SpiritOfEdna · 28/05/2024 09:58

@SpringLobelia thank you for the note - I have had a very busy time of it at work the last couple of weeks with a reorganization going on - my boss keeps telling me we will be out of jobs by end of May (helpful) but who knows - it's fast approaching! I'll know when a HR meeting gets popped into my diary 😃

I do have a list for today:

  • investigate how to stop slugs eating the hostas
  • research a replacement hob - ours has a chunk of glass taken out the edge
  • finish the training course I've been doing, the videos can play in the background whilst I catch up on work
  • chivy my team through a business case submission for today
  • need to pop round to the GNeice's to drop off her sunglasses
  • hire a car for a much needed break mid June

Another busy day today, have a good day all, will go and read back and see what everyone is up to, SoE

SingleThreadJoiner · 28/05/2024 11:38

Hello all from half term, D is in holiday club for the week, I'm trying to power through various work things and just lurking here. Bit of a low mood recently and have scaled back a lot of things. Hopefully just one of those time-of-the-month things. Also can someone please turn off the rain?!

KateMiskin · 28/05/2024 12:07

Morning or is it noon? I need to be very productive this week at work as I have a lot of pending stuff to catch up on after the bank holiday. I have also spent too much time on MN, which I need to try to curb.

Housework wise, I have caught up on the laundry but need to fold and put away. And get in some exercise.

Frostandfrogs · 28/05/2024 12:14

Gopd to see you @SpiritOfEdna 👋 Oh those online training things are a pain!

I'd love to work out how to turn the rain off too @SingleThreadJoiner
Sorry about the low mood 💐

Hello @KateMiskin It's afternoon in my house!

I have done my weekly blah, and now off to do my volunteering 🐴 Welly boot weather 😔 I'm hoping my knees hold me up!

SpringLobelia · 28/05/2024 12:23

Hi @SpiritOfEdna ! Sorry hope you did not think i was stalking you. Thanks

On the subject of hostas- I flipping love Hostas and have never ever managed to keep them slug free. I don't like using chemicals because we have hedgehogs and lots of lovely blackbirds so I tried making up a garlic solution as recommended and sprayed my hostas twice weekly. I just ended up with no hostas and a whole load of gently hiccuping garlic escargot.

I hope so much you have more success and would love to know what might find that works!

I wish you all the best for the company restructuring. How very stressful. Thanks

Hi to everyone! Thanks to everyone and best wishes for low moods and rain and families. and love to all. ❤

Not alot happening here. DS1 has a bad cold. And is making heavy weather about it. Actually I might go and get some covid tests because he is pretty grim with it. Chocolate icecream on tap has helped his sore throat though.

I'm trying to wash all the bedclothes today. And will order pizza for dinner (as DS1's request).

Hope everyone is well.

Aria999 · 28/05/2024 18:29

@Alittlelostinlifeisi I was on your recent thread and I wanted to say join us here if you like!

petalpower · 28/05/2024 20:50

Back from our trip away yesterday afternoon - saw all my husband’s side of the family at FIL 90th birthday lunch which was lovely. Also caught up with various members of my side of the family including dad and stepmother. We go on holiday for a week on Friday so I must get on with jobs at home as I’ve really fallen behind with one thing and another. Still haven’t been able to register auntie’s death as there is an admin hold up with the doctors surgery so I fear that may not happen until we’re back from our week away. I have been able to make some tentative funeral plans after talking to other family members over the weekend so at least there’s a bit of forward movement with that. Otherwise it feels as though we’re in limbo.
No individual replies as I’m sure I’ll miss someone out but lovely to see so much chat and supportiveness on this thread.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 29/05/2024 08:05

Petal, much needed break for you and dh. You're are likely doing more than you can process. Hoping you can get some rest and clear your head a bit while away. 🩷

Frostandfrogs · 29/05/2024 09:00

Morning! I had some really big fat slugs last year as I was putting cat food out for the hedgehog/s and inadvertently feeding the slugs as well. The hedgehogs caught up with them in the end though, it seems. We have toads in the garden too and apparently they also eat slugs. According to my googling, slugs particularly love young hostas so best to grow them safely in pots, then plant out when they are bigger. Apparently.

Well deserved break for you @petalpower! My mum is a handful, much as I love her, and I can imagine feeling at a complete loss when her time comes.

@SpringLobelia so much to be said for the magical properties of ice-cream! I hope he feels better soon.

Welcome home @Peridot1 ! We had same weather yesterday. Everything has gone mad in the garden and my sore knee is delighted that we've finally got a gardener to help once a week.

Today I'm mostly going to utilise my almost completely uncluttered house (and thus brain space) and start looking at some online courses as I would like to keep my hand in, in case I ever find a job that I like the look of. I'd also like to know if I can develop some concentration skills as I get older (better late than never!)

And paint the skirting boards in the cloakroom. Approx 15 years ago, Flylady promised me this would happen eventually! But people come with stuff and go again without it quite often in this family, so it has taken a long while 😂

Best wishes to you all and hoping today is a good one 💕

RunningKatie · 29/05/2024 12:52

Afternoon all! Half term here, I've got a day off so am powering through a hopelessly optimistic list.
Sadly I seem to have lost lots of old digital photos, I've been hunting and found lots of usb sticks etc but not the photos I needed to make an 18th birthday gift.
Anyway, the sun is slightly shining so I've got all the white washing on the line and I'm going to do lego with dc2 this afternoon.

SpiritOfEdna · 29/05/2024 13:43

Loving all the hosta tips. I was thinking of trying the garlic one, but hiccuping slugs! 😃followed by planting them in big tubs if that didn't work. I've been lavish with coffee grounds as well but according to Havoc's article, that was a pretty useless activity.

Today:

  • chase the two roofers who promised they would quote to re-point the chimney stacks 3 WEEKS AGO.
  • Hunt for suitable presents for my brother's & niece's big birthdays. We have ideas, but need to sort out.
  • Book doggo in for a groom before we go away
  • Still not booked the hire car, am dithering over taking out excess insurance elsewhere
  • my bedroom is a tip, so I need to pick up at least 10 items: books and clothes should do that today.
That is all from me, have a good day all, SoE
Aria999 · 29/05/2024 13:47

Hi @SpiritOfEdna !

What country are you hiring a car in? I'm conflicted on this as I feel the car hire companies charge silly money for excess insurance on the other hand I have twice had to claim on 3rd party hire car insurance (I tend to scrape unfamiliar cars on low lying objects 🤣🤦‍♀️) and it's a tight nuisance. One of them took over a year!

Aria999 · 29/05/2024 13:47

*right, not tight!

SpiritOfEdna · 29/05/2024 15:37

UK, @Aria999 - I am conflicted for that very reason - the length of time to claim ! We are driving to Cornwall from North West so 5 - 8 hour drive depending on traffic and we will be in narrow country lanes for the last bit of the drive when I am usually shattered and grumpy and if something were to happen I want good cover 😄

Aria999 · 29/05/2024 16:17

Have you tried Alamo and Arnold Clark? I have mostly found are the best for not charging a fortune on insurance, though Alamo has gotten less generous recently.

Frostandfrogs · 30/05/2024 08:38

The skirting got painted 🎉 So unlike me 😂

I hope half term is going smoothly and I hope holiday transport arrangements get sorted 🤞

I need to do some weeding at mum's today. The gardener is at mine but the work is heavier here.

I plan to move a bookcase today. And I'm feeling the urge to update my little 'books I have read' journal and then decide which books to keep, and which are to go.

I have promised myself No More New Books. I have three credits on Audible and I have a new release dropping onto it today, I hope. I shall save the rest for emergency book-buying.

Have a happy and productive day everyone 🏡

I

SpringLobelia · 30/05/2024 09:53

Morning all!

Cold, wet and windy here.

I am going to do a 15 minute declutter of the spare room today.

I also bought a cheap potted supermarket plant from Aldi. Plan to buy one every single time I go to a supermarket (at least 4 times a week as I don't shop much in advance) for the remainder of the spring/summer and just shove it in the garden somewhere. I have a vague idea that this will hopefully result in a riot of beautiful colour and not a goddawful mess. Grin Today's plant is a little perennial alpine thing with tall pink flowers and is now in a pot on our balcony.

Best wishes to everyone today!

SingleThreadJoiner · 30/05/2024 11:55

Hi all! Loving all your gardening stories, we don't really have a garden here (not that I would know what to do with it anyway) so it's fun to live vicariously 🌿

It's my birthday today, one of my best friends is over from Paris for a couple of days, and another good friend whom we haven't seen in 7 years is joining us for lunch - so things are looking up 😀(though I note so far noone seems to have answered my plea to turn off the rain...)

@Frostandfrogs I can't believe you decided to paint the skirting boards, and then you just....went and did it! Amazing! Also, re: your thoughts about online courses, I'm sure you know this already but there is a TON of excellent free material on the Open University website Home | OpenLearn - Open University - including lots of badged courses!

Happy rest of the week everyone 🌺
