This “humanisation” of dogs has got ridiculous

Had lunch in a chain restaurant yesterday. Two couples came in with smallish dogs. No problem with that as the restaurant is dog friendly however, they insisted on having high chairs for the dogs when their meal came as they had been holding the dogs on their laps until then. The waitress refused but they went and got them anyway so we had these shoved next to our table with a restless dog breathing and being uncomfortable in the high chair very close to us.
Today I get on an intercity train and a woman boards with a medium size dog and puts it on the seat next to her across from me at a table. The person who had booked that seat then turned up and the woman said what was she supposed to do with the dog as it couldn’t go on the floor! It did but was clearly distressed and couldn’t settle, poor thing.
I think putting animals in these situations is so unfair on them and also on others but it seems to be very common these days for people to treat their animal as if it is a human.

I love my own dog and like dogs in general but I wouldn't have eaten at a dog friendly place and i wouldn't take mine. But long as people run these businesses, people will bring their dogs. I don't find it hygienic.

Popcorn23 · 12/02/2024 20:09

Totally agree with this. It is unfair on the animal but also on the people around them - I like dogs generally but want them nowhere near my food!

Some dog owners also seem to get a bit offended if it is jumping and sniffing at you in the park and you don't respond positively to it. It is no offence to the dog but I just want to get in with my walk in the park!

Coincidentally · 12/02/2024 20:10

You are right but you will slaughtered on here by posters who can’t form relationships with people and who use dogs as substitutes.

You're totally right OP.

Smartiepants79 · 12/02/2024 20:14

I would not be returning to any food business that allowed idiots to put their dogs in a high chair.
This type of stuff is slowly turning me from a dog tolerater to a dog disliker.

Aaron95 · 12/02/2024 20:14

I totally agree. Dogs are pets they are not humans something an increasing number of people seem to forget. And don't start me on people who refer to "fur babies" 😡

35965a · 12/02/2024 20:14

I agree. No wonder so many dogs are so anxious and badly behaved

AnneLovesGilbert · 12/02/2024 20:14

Dogs in high chairs is fucking rank. YANBU at all. People are ridiculous. But MN is as dog obsessed as anywhere so you’re going to get torn apart by the fur baby brigade. They’ll say they prefer dogs to children and they’d rather be around animals than people any day blah blah blah. You’re right.

DreadPirateRobots · 12/02/2024 20:18

I love dogs. Which is why I don't make the self-absorbed mistake of thinking that they have human needs. They don't. They have dog needs, and it's cruel to treat them like humans.

usernother · 12/02/2024 20:20

Absolutely OP. YANBU. It's pathetic.

Blanketenvy · 12/02/2024 20:20

I love dogs and prefer animals to people generally, and like that I can go into cafes and pubs with my dog but dogs in high chairs is absurd and the dog should be firmly on the floor.

Syndulla · 12/02/2024 20:23

Have we had the "Well I'd rather sit next to a dog than a child" brigade pop up yet?

I went into a clothes shop today that had a sign up saying that due to too many toileting incidents, dogs had to remain in the entrance way only. Why do people feel the need to take their dogs clothes shopping? Grim, just grim.

bakewellbride · 12/02/2024 20:23

Yanbu. See also stupid dog clothes, dog friendly Prosecco, cards in the card factory 'from the dog', I could go on.

DiscoBeat · 12/02/2024 20:25

We took our Labrador today to a local pub. They have a quarry tiled dog friendly area for people with dogs and another area which is not open to dogs. He just slept the walk off on the floor though, the idea of a highchair is bizarre!

aitchteeaitch · 12/02/2024 20:26

They put a dog in a highchair? I wonder if the local Environmental Health officers might take an interest in that.

Comedycook · 12/02/2024 20:27

No one will ever convince me that dogs aren't being used as a substitute for children.

TheBraves · 12/02/2024 20:27

Photo of the dogs in a high chair? You must have taken one.

Maireas · 12/02/2024 20:28

Oh yes, the usual "I prefer dogs to humans"/ I'd rather be around dogs than children" usual responses to this sort of thing.....
Good dog owners (and there are many) treat them as dogs and train them accordingly. Increasingly some others anthropomorphise and therein lies the problem. Coupled with increased dog ownership, you get issues like this.

Comedycook · 12/02/2024 20:28

At a place near me they had an event where people could bring their dog to meet santa

That's because you're treating him like a dog!
