This “humanisation” of dogs has got ridiculous

Had lunch in a chain restaurant yesterday. Two couples came in with smallish dogs. No problem with that as the restaurant is dog friendly however, they insisted on having high chairs for the dogs when their meal came as they had been holding the dogs on their laps until then. The waitress refused but they went and got them anyway so we had these shoved next to our table with a restless dog breathing and being uncomfortable in the high chair very close to us.
Today I get on an intercity train and a woman boards with a medium size dog and puts it on the seat next to her across from me at a table. The person who had booked that seat then turned up and the woman said what was she supposed to do with the dog as it couldn’t go on the floor! It did but was clearly distressed and couldn’t settle, poor thing.
I think putting animals in these situations is so unfair on them and also on others but it seems to be very common these days for people to treat their animal as if it is a human.

Maireas
The dog ice cream is one I've backed down on. After privately laughing about how silly it was, I got one on a hot day at a National Trust/English Heritage place for mine and it it went down well as an alternative to the bottle of water I carry with me when we go for walks.

I agree with most posters though that people humanify-ing their dogs is getting silly.

I do love dogs but in both the OPs examples these were bad dog owners not observing the rules of the cafe or the train, causing distress to their dogs as well as to others and putting their own needs first which is really the problem not dogs themselves

Some dogs are OK in some environments others are not and if you care about your dog you don't put them in situations that cause them stress. My sisters dog loves a lie down under a pub table and is perfectly calm and happy there. My dog is big and a bit grumpy. He is not a pub lunch kind of a dog and I have accepted that. I do not take him to places where he will be stressed and upset for his sake as much as for anyone else. Occasionally I have made a mistake with a situation like we all have and then I remove him and don't do it again. I don't expect others to bend the rules to make it OK for my dog.

Please tell me they had bibs on too 🤣

I can't believe the number of daft owners putting dogs in thick padded coats when it's not even cold. The poor dogs must be sweltering. Fair enough if it's actually cold weather but I've seen dogs in thick puffer jacket type coats on the mildest of days recently. It just seems cruel. they are just using them as a fashion accessory.

Mylobsterteapot · 12/02/2024 21:07

I love my dog, but he is a dog. He’s quite happy asleep under an outdoor table whilst I eat. I don’t want him near my own food, let alone anyone else’s.

vodkaredbullgirl · 12/02/2024 21:07

My dogs are dogs, just take them for walks nothing else.

Robrat · 12/02/2024 21:10

I was recently at a friend's for dinner and one of the guests who had their dog with them put the squirty cream that was served for dessert on a plate and let the dog lick it from the hosts's plate!

Woodyandbuzz1 · 12/02/2024 21:13

How did they get a dog into a highchair lol?? I'm quite wrongly imagining the dogs back legs sticking through the two leg holes 😅

No responsible person would leave their dog tied up outside of a shop. It could be stolen.

Funny. I've left my dog outside my local tesco express and Turkish takeaway place on many occasions. No-one has ever stolen him. I can't bear walking into shops and tripping over someone's yapping, untrained chihuahua. There's always an excuse as well. I love my boy with all my heart but there are some places he just doesn't need to be.

ThePure · 12/02/2024 21:14

It's insane that anyone takes their dog clothes shopping at all. Just because you can it really doesn't mean you should. It would ruin my own shopping experience let alone anyone else's

When I got my dog it was on the understanding that our lifestyle fits with things that dogs like to do like walking and camping. If I preferred shopping and the cinema I would not have got a dog

2 -3,000 dogs are stolen in Britain each year. Nobody has stolen yours - yet.

It's generally cockyshitpoo owners who don't understand that their dogs are just dogs ( mongrels actually.)

It frazzles my brain as to why their owners treat them like the most precious of babies.

Also... their pooches seem to hate people and other dogs and just blurt out the ' oh he's just being a bit vocal' missives.

And I'm a dog lover and a dog owner.

If a dog owner puts their dog before a human (me) I have a big bar of dark chocolate at the ready at all times for just such an eventuality. (joke, but I often want to feed the damn thing with this). Maybe I just need to get arsenic for the owner instead.

Maverickess · 12/02/2024 21:01

I'll be honest, I'm not a massive fan of humans. Find animals (not just dogs) in general much easier to deal with and I do enjoy spending time with them.
Maybe I'm jaded by years of customer service and tired of whining, entitled people who can't take any responsibility for themselves 🤷🏼‍♀️

Doesn't mean I don't treat my dogs like dogs, train them, and recognise they're dogs. I love them, I find them really fulfilling. But they're not my child they're my dog and treating them like a child is likely to make them a) unhappy and b) unhealthy, neither of which I want.

Preferring my dogs company to most humans doesn't mean I don't realise they're dogs and treat them accordingly.

Owners like you aren't the problem. It's the ones who treat them like babies, not dogs.
Your misanthropic attitude is your business but clearly doesn't make you think that your dog needs the privileges of a human child. Which is as it should be.

Went out for dinner at smart, expensive local restaurant for our wedding anniversary. Couple in their 30s walk in with a black lab and a golden retriever like they are Hollywood A listers/royalty. I mean we have dogs too but we don’t put them in the car and take them to dinner. What is that about? What is wrong with people? I don’t blame the dogs obviously.

Gotaprettypup · 12/02/2024 21:43

Our Ddog has had doggy ice-cream, while we are on holiday ,suddenly warm weather can be uncomfortable so it helps keep her cool.
She goes on trips because we are there. We holiday with her in mind. She behaves well and is usually welcomed. We have had many compliments. We do treat her like a dog though, she does dog activities. and is far too big for chairs, high or otherwise 😅

Dog ice cream.
Dog stress relieving scented candles.

Seen in the last few months.

Poor dogs wouldn't need stress relieved if they weren't dragged round busy places and shoved into high chairs.

ThePure · 12/02/2024 21:50

Is that literally a picture of your dog sitting on a railway carriage seat though....
I mean that's a brave post

TyreTracks · 12/02/2024 21:52

Photo of dogs in high hairs?

I think you have jumped the shark here OP. Wind ‘em up and watch ‘em go eh?

RadiatorHead · 12/02/2024 21:53

I’ve actually seen people say on here that they’d starve so they could feed their dog 🙄 Totally nuts.

I’d eat my dog if I was that hungry but hey, I’m not a dog lover 🤷‍♀️

ThechicRoyal · 12/02/2024 22:00

A lot of people with mental health issues that treat their dogs like kids...it's not normal. no offence to those with MH issues and dogs. I'm not a fan of dogs, prefer cats but we all have to share this earth.

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 12/02/2024 22:01

I don't believe this actually happened.

bingoringo4 · 12/02/2024 22:01

I have two dogs, they are loved very much but they are just dogs. Not family, but pets. They live/sleep outside. They are walked, fed, given bones and toys. But that's it. They don't come on holiday, or shopping or down the pub. People who humanise dogs are sick people and are in need of mental help. Treating them like children doesn't make them children.
