This “humanisation” of dogs has got ridiculous

Had lunch in a chain restaurant yesterday. Two couples came in with smallish dogs. No problem with that as the restaurant is dog friendly however, they insisted on having high chairs for the dogs when their meal came as they had been holding the dogs on their laps until then. The waitress refused but they went and got them anyway so we had these shoved next to our table with a restless dog breathing and being uncomfortable in the high chair very close to us.
Today I get on an intercity train and a woman boards with a medium size dog and puts it on the seat next to her across from me at a table. The person who had booked that seat then turned up and the woman said what was she supposed to do with the dog as it couldn’t go on the floor! It did but was clearly distressed and couldn’t settle, poor thing.
I think putting animals in these situations is so unfair on them and also on others but it seems to be very common these days for people to treat their animal as if it is a human.

Nuts. And totally unfair on the dogs.

I love my dog immensely- but he’s not a child, he’s my dog.

Myweepal · 12/02/2024 20:32

Oh ffs OP! I love my dog and consider her one of my bestest pals but a high chair ! That is madness and unhygienic! And I bet the dogs werent comfy either. I am trying to imagine my Malinois in a highchair ! OMG !!

Thehigheroffer · 12/02/2024 20:32

Britain is, and has always been, a nation of animal lovers. Our animal companions, cats and dogs, become virtually part of the family. For many people dogs and cats are very therapeutic in a stressful world where many of us, have in varying degrees, mental health issues. In addition where would visually impaired and deaf people be without assistance dogs. Be tolerant as the OP and other PP's may have those issues one day.

You are right but you will slaughtered on here by posters who can’t form relationships with people and who use dogs as substitutes.

Yep this.
Lots of difference between a happy dog lolling about on the floor of a country pub after a long walk and a poor little dog shoved into a high chair in a cafe right next to you, It's also gross! poor babies getting a licky, hairy, dog bum encrusted high chair.

frozendaisy · 12/02/2024 20:33

Purrsecco, obvious if you think about it!

Dussa · 12/02/2024 20:33

People bringing dogs to extremely crowded places such as music festivals and events gets me. The poor dogs look stressed with all the noise and people jostling around them and they are a massive trip hazard with their leads. My friend has mobility problems and tripped at a crowded outdoor event last summer dislocating her knee, after a berk with a very stressed dog failed to notice that the dog in its distress had gone between my friends legs and the lead tripped her up.

Bells3032 · 12/02/2024 20:35

I love dogs and love going to dog friendly places but putting a dog in a high chair where BABIES EAT is incredibly unhygenic. Babies drop their food and touch everything and they're going to be in contact with those germs. Not even counting the babies that may have an allergy.

As for the women who wanted the seat for her dog well she should of paid for a seat for her dog. you can't expect people to give up their PAID for seat to a frigging dog.

getting a dog to the point they can't be on the floor is really unhealthy for the dog to. that's where they're meant to be!!

Please don't stop there what else is there, this is oddly fascinating. Dog prosecco? Really?

Really?

Have to Google this!

Google "Valentine's Day gifts for dogs"
Seriously.

Justfinking · 12/02/2024 20:35

That is really disgusting, people are insane I don't understand why a business would even allow this, I agree with PP it is unhygienic

cariadlet · 12/02/2024 20:35

I love dogs. I understand why some people prefer animals to people.

But dogs are not human and I think treating them as substitute children is a form of animal cruelty. It isn't recognising their needs as dogs.

Plus putting dogs in high chairs is gross and unhygienic. Who would want to put their toddler in a high chair where a dog has been slobbering and shedding hair?

TedWilson · 12/02/2024 20:36

It's getting ridiculous. Shall
I just bring my cat and rabbit to join in as well???

We interviewed someone who wanted to bring their dog to the office. The office is open for corporate hire as well. They did not get the job.

On it!
This is better than TV....

RedVanYellowVan · 12/02/2024 20:37

Dogs in cafes and restaurants is a grim recent development. Unless a place bans dogs (except guide dogs) we don't go in. It is saving us a fortune. Last time we were in the Lake District we could not find a single cafe that was dog free. Dogs in high chairs is ridiculous. They are just overbred wolves, they should be outdoors or in a shed.

Since I have twice seen dogs pee on clothes in shops and had to report dog poo to staff in M&S I tend to buy online.

What I find hard to understand is all these so-called animal lovers who are apparently ok with millions of cattle etc being raised and slaughtered just to feed their mutts. Are they supposedly inferior to dogs? And you can bet your bottom dollar they will have a worse life and a more violent death than dogs or cats.

The term fur baby makes me want to vomit on the mutt.

mitogoshi · 12/02/2024 20:38

It's got ridiculous, I say this as a dog owner (note owner not parent!) who takes ddog out but he stays on the floor because he's a dog! My ddog loves a night in the pub, tries to drag me in on other nights but the stone floor is all he gets to sit on

NewYearNewCalendar · 12/02/2024 20:40

YANBU OP. It is absolutely ridiculous how people treat dogs at the moment.

I’ve also seen dogs peeing on clothes in store. Owners predictably did absolutely nothing about it.

Honestly I really want a dog, we’re seriously considering getting one next year, but this crap puts me off…

frozendaisy · 12/02/2024 20:40

"I woof you"

Brilliant

This has to be peak consumerism surely? Utter utter madness.

You don't stand a chance OP. There are £25 valentine gift boxes for your, presume your unless you send them anonymously to other pooches

Are there cards from one dog to another dog?

Quizine · 12/02/2024 20:41

Puppaccino in the coffee shops now.

AnneLovesGilbert · 12/02/2024 20:42

Seriously.

Dog ice cream.
Dog stress relieving scented candles.

Seen in the last few months.

Maireas · 12/02/2024 20:42

It's quite brilliant, isn't it @frozendaisy - not a spoof, people genuinely buy this stuff.
It signals the demise of the decadent West - the ultimate consumerism.

Maireas · 12/02/2024 20:43

frozendaisy · 12/02/2024 20:43

There is!

Plus edible bacon and chicken flavoured cards.

Way past the point of no return, if people buy valentine's cards from their dog to another dog I think high chairs in restaurants are small fry!

Quizine · 12/02/2024 20:41

Puppaccino in the coffee shops now.

Again insane product
Great name

mitogoshi · 12/02/2024 20:45

Local cafe has a dog menu with multiple flavours of ice cream, pupachinos, and various cookies ... my ddog wasn't impressed, he prefers human treats so haven't been back.

Maireas · 12/02/2024 20:45

There was a brilliant thread on here just before Christmas - a woman didn't know what to buy her dog for Christmas because he had everything! (She provided a list - he did seem to!)
Some very pithy replies...

OrlandointheWilderness · 12/02/2024 20:46

I find it highly insulting to the dogs. I love my dogs. They are awesome. But they are DOGS! They have their own species specific needs and to make them into pseudo humans is implying that who they are is not good enough - their dog nature isn't enough for people, they must be substitute humans. Bloody bonkers.
