This “humanisation” of dogs has got ridiculous

Had lunch in a chain restaurant yesterday. Two couples came in with smallish dogs. No problem with that as the restaurant is dog friendly however, they insisted on having high chairs for the dogs when their meal came as they had been holding the dogs on their laps until then. The waitress refused but they went and got them anyway so we had these shoved next to our table with a restless dog breathing and being uncomfortable in the high chair very close to us.
Today I get on an intercity train and a woman boards with a medium size dog and puts it on the seat next to her across from me at a table. The person who had booked that seat then turned up and the woman said what was she supposed to do with the dog as it couldn’t go on the floor! It did but was clearly distressed and couldn’t settle, poor thing.
I think putting animals in these situations is so unfair on them and also on others but it seems to be very common these days for people to treat their animal as if it is a human.

I didn't know that dogs pissing in clothes shops was a thing. I haven't had a dog in decades, but when we did we trained them, which seems to have gone out of fashion post pandemic, possibly earlier. Anyhow, if people aren't training dogs anymore, how come no one has cornered the market in dog nappies? Then they could piss in m&s without ruining the clothes or flooring? Presumably they would try to bite the nappy, but I'm sure there could be a workaround (durable fabric, strategic connections?)

YeOldeGreyhound · 12/02/2024 22:07

Christ, this thread is mean spirited.
Yes, a dog in a high chair in a restaurant is pretty grim, and dogs should not be on seats on public transport.... but that is a problem with the entitlement of the owners. But like all threads moaning about a tiny example of a couple of people being arse, it decends into sweeping statements about dog owners in general... such as the comment about people with dogs can't deal with human relationships.

The existence of dog ice cream, dog clothing, pawsecco, puppachinos, greetings cards to and from dogs etc have fuck all impact on you. No one is making you buy them. Someone calling their dog their fur baby also has zero impact on you.

And some people do have a dog as a child substitute because they can't have children. There is nothing wrong with that at all.

Britain is, and has always been, a nation of animal lovers. Our animal companions, cats and dogs, become virtually part of the family. For many people dogs and cats are very therapeutic in a stressful world where many of us, have in varying degrees, mental health issues. In addition where would visually impaired and deaf people be without assistance dogs. Be tolerant as the OP and other PP's may have those issues one day.

What mental health issues are helped by putting a dog in a high chair?

Is that literally a picture of your dog sitting on a railway carriage seat though....
I mean that's a brave post

wooden slats, not a 'seat' and wiped down. Old steam carriage designated for pet friendly.

Dunnoburt · 12/02/2024 22:11

A woman round way makes sure she wipes "DS's" penis everytime he cocks his leg....... YANBU OP.....

GG1986 · 12/02/2024 22:12

Yes I find it all very bizarre! Dogs in highchairs is taking the piss and the waitress should have refused, it's so unhygienic. I've seen dogs eating food off of plates on the table before, it's not cute and not hygienic! If a cafe is dog friendly I would usually avoid.

BitOutOfPractice · 12/02/2024 22:17

I remembered tonight why I never ever go to big supermarkets when I encountered a couple who had brought their jack Russell to the supermarket in a baby sling strapped to the woman’s front.

this is a couple so if the dog can’t be left, one of them could stay home surely.

At a place near me they had an event where people could bring their dog to meet santa

Mine too! And my friend brought her dog...

Fizbosshoes · 12/02/2024 22:23

A dog in a high chair? Wtaf?😳

Bruisername · 12/02/2024 22:24

I don’t know if anyone has mentioned the baby carrier for dogs. I was in the supermarket and turned round to see a poor pug strapped to his owners chest!

I love dogs - they’re the best. But they are dogs and it’s cruel to treat them like human babies. They don’t need cute clothes and manicures and to be carried everywhere. They want to be running round sniffing other dogs butts, eating goose poo and mouldy food they find on the floor and having tummy rubs.

its nice to be able to take doggo in a cafe but I have no need to take him to restaurants or shops etc and he isn’t keen either.

however, over 20 years ago I was in a posh restaurant in Paris. The woman who sat at the table next to us had a little dog who she sat next to her. Not great but when her food came she let the dog eat off her plate!

is it possible to have tests for owners - question 1 being - do you believe the dog is a human or animal?

TheTimeIsNowMaybeNow · 12/02/2024 22:27

I don't mind seeing a well behaved dog in a pub tbh putting dogs in highchairs is ridiculous though.

The pug was probably better off in a baby carrier if its anything like the ones I've seen recently. Sound like they're going to have a heart attack walking down the street

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 12/02/2024 22:30

I have a dog and am quite soppy about him but ewww at dogs in high chairs 🤢

He's a dog, he can sit on the floor by my feet in dog friendly cafes.

Deadringer · 12/02/2024 22:33

I know a few people who baby and humanise their dogs and in every case the dogs are highly strung and nervous. They are doing them a huge disservice imo.

Emily1583 · 12/02/2024 22:38

Definitely. It is odd. I always cringe when people call their pet dogs, cats, etc, their baby.

Suspish · 12/02/2024 22:38

Drives me insane. I’ve seen people put little dogs on top of the table when it’s a picnic bench type place. I wonder how they’d feel if I put my dirty shoes on their table or my bare arse for that matter. I know one idiot who takes their dog to see Santa. Pitiful.

ZebraPensAreLife · 12/02/2024 22:40

I don’t think it’s terrible to take dogs to see Santa. They probably get as much / more out of it than babies / children who are too young to know WTF is going on - in both cases it’s more for the accompanying adults!

Haven't you heard of Santa Paws before? I expect most of the dogs wore Christmas jumpers too.

FootDown · 12/02/2024 22:42

I agree that OP jumped the shark on this one but it seems to have worked. 😬

TerrysNeapolitan · 12/02/2024 22:43

Bonkers OP! I have a friend - nearly 50 - post on SM daily about her cat like it is a child with constant pictures and poses. Boring as fuck. Funny thing in all of them cat looks like it could not give a shit about her !

Portakalkedi · 12/02/2024 22:44

Yes, it's sad really that so many people now seem to think their dog is to be treated as a human, not sure what is lacking from their lives to make them act like this? It's vile, and there are now many places I can't go as dogs are all over the fecking place. In high chairs? What utter twats, and they should have all been chucked out. I'd be speaking with the manager there, bad enough if they're on the ground but in a baby's chair at the table is offensive.

Lovetosleep1 · 12/02/2024 22:44

Those people sound unhinged OP.
I have a dog and I love her but she is a dog. She just does dog things, goes for long walks, plays fetch, does obedience training, sleeps in her crate, eats dog food. I never want to take her on the train, to a cafe or restaurant. I think dogs are happier when they're treated like dogs.

Alicewinn · 12/02/2024 22:47

Agree - I think there needs to be better education about owning dogs. I think it’s cruel to treat them like baby’s and have breeds with short legs and heavy bodies that waddle and can’t run and breeds with deformed noses that have breathing difficulties coz they look ‘cute’

MariaLuna · 12/02/2024 22:48

You ain't heard nothing yet....

Years ago when I was waitressing a guy (in a group) bought his dog, who was under the table. He actually asked for a steak for the dog....!!

I went to the kitchen and told the chef. "Aye, tell him to fuck off!" LOL

Syndulla · 12/02/2024 20:23

Have we had the "Well I'd rather sit next to a dog than a child" brigade pop up yet?

I went into a clothes shop today that had a sign up saying that due to too many toileting incidents, dogs had to remain in the entrance way only. Why do people feel the need to take their dogs clothes shopping? Grim, just grim.

I’ve now been unfortunate enough to encounter dog shit in my local morissons twice now, when I went and told someone who worked there she rolled her eyes and said ‘not again - this happens so often now ‘

TheTimeIsNowMaybeNow · 12/02/2024 22:52

Why the fuck are morrissons letting dogs in if they keep finding shit 🤮
