Does my child have red hair?

naisspray · 10/02/2024 09:56

When my newborn was born 10 weeks ago they had dark hair, striking blue eyes and fair eyelashes/eyebrows. His skin is also fair.

His hair has fallen out in the usual pattern and I think it is red of some description but other people don't agree.

Last week a friend said it looked red when I held my baby up in the light at a certain angle. Maybe auburn colour.

It doesn't matter if the hair is red, I'm curious as I always felt my baby was going to be a red head lol

For reference my mum is a bit ginger, as she's Irish. My siblings and all the other grandchild have either blonde hair or boring brown lol. I've got light brown and lots of blonde.

I think if he was going to be brunette his eyebrows and eyelashes would be dark already.

Curious as I was born blonde and now I'm brunette, but mousey

Looks brown to me. Possibly you'd be able to see red in some lights but not there!

Namechangeforthiss · 10/02/2024 09:58

No, to be honest they don’t have enough hair to determine colour at the moment.

FastAndLast · 10/02/2024 09:59

You really can’t tell. My daughter’s hair on the nape of her neck was bright red when she was born (literally bottom half of the hair strands, the top was a goldie brown colour). It was blonde by the time she was 6 months and then she went brunette when she was in her teens.

Difficult to tell. I will say that my DS - who has the most gorgeous red/blonde hair - was clearly a redhead from birth. This is outing because I've told this to people in real life but I had an ELCS with the curtain up so I couldn't see him. The anaesthetist who was standing by my head asked us whether we had expected DS to be quite so ginger!

JanglingJack · 10/02/2024 10:03

My daughter was born looking like Johnny Rotten! The baby hair disappeared, became darker and then blonde. I suppose she's stayed a dark blonde since.

My granddaughter - Ziggy Stardust! 🤣

TiredOfRepeatingMyself · 10/02/2024 10:03

Your baby hasn't got enough hair to be noticeable, but I would have said brown

JanglingJack · 10/02/2024 10:04

Ah you can't tell from that angle anyway.

Did you opt for the test that showed hair colour lol

@naisspray I didn't really know how to respond especially as DH and I both have red hair! In his defence, DS was a bit quiet/sleepy when he was born so I think he was trying to distract me while they were trying to get DS to respond but it still makes me laugh now!

calexico · 10/02/2024 10:08

I don't think so. I have 2 children with red hair and it was obvious even when they were newborn and had hardly any hair.

LeonoraFlorence · 10/02/2024 10:16

Looks brown to me. My DDs have all had that sort of dark brown when born but ended up as bright blonde toddlers and still all blonde now.

Oh... I do hope either yourself or DH has ginger hair in the family and not just the milkman! 🤣

OMG babies change all the time and is hard to determine colour of hair with babies with very little hair and a few weeks old.

The bit of hair at the nape of neck like brown

Squiggles23 · 10/02/2024 10:24

Are you wondering whose dad the baby is?

Gingernaut · 10/02/2024 10:28

Redhead here.

I was born with a marmalade coloured peach fuzz.

Redheads are kinda sorta obvious from birth.

Enjoy your baby and stop worrying over a single remark

Here's my squished face redhead at one day old, not sure about yours?

My son was red from birth, he didn’t have much hair but what he did have was ginger, he has brown eyes too. His dads mum and all her brothers were ginger so I don’t know why I was surprised that he was. Gorgeous colour too.

I'm brunette, my DH is fair. Our DC1 is brunette. DC2 fair, and DC3 redhead. There's a gap of nine years between DCs 2 and 3, because DH had the snip and then a reversal in that time, plus it was three and a half years before I conceived again after the reversal.

The husband in the couple who were living next door to us at the time of DC3's birth, had red hair. There were some jokes made between DH and myself, I can tell you. 😅

Off topic completely, but is that a blanket on your baby or a dress?

mondaytosunday · 10/02/2024 10:43

Can't tell. Hair colour can change that young too.

Yes red hair is a "thing" here

His hair currently looks light brown to me but he could develop into one of the myriad shades of redhead. It's not possible to tell at the moment, you'll have to give it more time to become apparent.

ohwhattodooo · 10/02/2024 10:54

It looks light brown but it's so difficult to tell with newborns! All 3 of my DCs were born ginger and now they're blonde!

It's an NHS Scotland hospital baby gown. 🙂
