Does anyone else feel unnerved by the news about King Charles?

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 06/02/2024 11:53

Yes I know this belongs in the Royal section but more traffic here for people feeling like I do.

King Charles has cancer, I am sure William is wondering if he will become King sooner than he anticipated. It makes me wonder too if Kate will be okay due to her recent surgery - William really needs her by his side if he is going to take on the Big Job.

Harry rushing home feels bad to me. I mean, it's good that he is coming to see his dad but it makes me feel as though it's serious - I just hope, hope it's not pancreatic cancer - but I just don't have a good feeling.

The Queen's only been gone 16 months. I feel out of sorts. Anyone else?

Not at all, but I’m sure prince William isn’t worrying about being king sooner he’s prob worrying about his dad, whilst his wife is recovering from surgery and hoping she’s going to make a full recovery not that she’ll need to prop him up. Odd thinking tbh. People may not like them but they are still people and family. Cancer is horrible, my sister had it, my aunt died from it and my sister in law has been very poorly from breast cancer recently. I hope all will be ok I wouldn’t wish it on anyone.

BusyMummy001 · 06/02/2024 13:35

Nope.

Most men of 75 have health issues and many develop cancers. He has access to the best possible medical care so his prognosis is massively better than anyone waiting on the NHS.

He’s just a state figure head, not anyone with any direct influence over my life in anyway, so not in the least unnerved,

SoupDragon · 06/02/2024 13:29

Not in this short a time though. The Queen and Prince Phillip lived into their 90s!

Yeah, but that’s fairly unusual.

As a person, I feel for him and his family and wish him well. I also think it must be rotten having to deal with this in public.

I don't feel unnerved at all or bothered by the idea of a short reign (in the abstract- as I've said, I feel for Charles). If anything, having a young king might be a good thing and discourage our endless mawkish national nostalgia.

Nonewclothes2024 · 06/02/2024 13:44

No , why would anyone feel unnerved or unsettled?
He's a rich old man who because he happened to be born into a certain family has a certain job.
He will have the absolute best of everything, no waiting lists for him.

Gia79 · 06/02/2024 13:52

No. But I am unsettled there’s an acid attacker on the loose and some parts of the media seem to have forgotten about it.

I feel for KC and his family of course and hope he’ll be well soon but I assume it’s caught early otherwise tweets such as those from Sunak (who will know more about the prognosis that we do) seem a little hasty and ill thought out. If you didn’t see it, he was very positive and said stuff like “I’m sure that he’ll be well soon” (paraphrasing). I wouldn’t say this unless I was sure it wasn’t terminal or advanced.

TooBored1 · 06/02/2024 13:52

Nope, not at all.

Ramalangadingdong · 06/02/2024 13:54

I feel out of sorts because a close relative just died and a couple of others have serious health conditions which require a lot of family input/care. Because of this I don't really care about K(F)C - you can attribute whatever word you wish to the "F".

GreenBottleHanging · 06/02/2024 13:54

I feel very sorry for his friends and family, as I do for anyone suffering health issues. I think there’s been a lot of medical concerns for them and it’s incredibly unpleasant for one family to have to endure so much as it is with any family.

But I’m not unnerved. I don’t know him. I have met him and he’s very nice and I think he has done a LOT for environmental issues, a lot of which the general public are likely unaware of. But he’s not close to me nor does he truly have any control over this shitshow of a government, so he doesn’t directly influence most of the things that happen to me and my family.

He had an operation on his prostate last week and this week they announced cancer. It’s almost certainly prostate cancer which almost all men his age have.

I imagine he will be fully recovered, having received the very best of healthcare, by the summer.
Do you not think these people have access to regular, comprehensive screening programmes?

A lot of men have an op to reduce the size of an enlarged prostate, without it being cancerous. I know 3 such, inc. my dh.

It was specifically announced that it was not prostate cancer. And no, all men of his age do not have prostate cancer.
However my FiL was found to have it in his mid 80s, but it was not causing any real problems, and we were told that while it’s more common in men of his sort of age, it grows more slowly than in younger men, so they are apt to die with it, rather than of it - which is what happened with FiL.

HelenHywater · 06/02/2024 13:55

I think you should stick to the Royal Topic OP where you'll find your tribe of fellow unnerved people. For me, not at all.

LittleGlowingOblong · 06/02/2024 13:56

I do. Too much change and uncertainty. Especially with a GE pencilled in for this year too.

Added to that the UK engaging in military action in the Middle East without a parliamentary debate beforehand.

RiderofRohan · 06/02/2024 13:56

Lol no.

I wish their family all the best like any other family. Nothing more to do with me.

girlfriend44 · 06/02/2024 13:56

Life goes on.
People sadly get cancer all the time. Famous, rich or not.
It's life.
He dosent know about everyone else and their troubles.
Also does it need to take up the whole of the news programme?

DarkAcademia · 06/02/2024 13:56

It feels like this will hasten the end of the monarchy if he dies soon because the public won’t have had any time to get sentimental about him like they did the Queen, and then William (who isn’t a particularly charismatic character for whatever reason, hence the way the palace leans quite heavily on Catherine) will be dropped into the role quite abruptly and the risk is that people will grasp the pointlessness and arbitraryness (is that a word?) of having a royal family at all.

As always, I will be very surprised if George is ever made king, and if Charles is seriously ill, this further lessens his chances, I think.

Nevertheless, many of us have fathers who are Charles’ age, and it does bring home how swiftly things can change. Kudos to them for the openness. They have an opportunity to raise awareness (and money) and I hope they don’t squander it like every other opportunity they have.

LadyWiddiothethird · 06/02/2024 13:57

Not at all,he is75,the chances are he will die with the cancer rather than from it.

It has clearly been caught early and probably easily treatable.

CactusMactus · 06/02/2024 13:58

I feel move unnerved that my GP's has closed down and I can't get a dental appointment for my kids...
But super duper glad Charlie is getting the bestest treatment.

Rainbow1901 · 06/02/2024 13:59

I can't say I feel unnerved by Charles' diagnosis but then he isn't related to me and I don't have the familial links that he has. His family will feel devastated for him in the same way as my family did when I was diagnosed with cancer and subsequently had several operations.
My SiL is currently receiving palliative care for cancer at home because there is no hospice place available for her so she is being cared for by her DH and a bunch of carers who do nothing except turn up in the late afternoon to dress her for breakfast!! I can't imagine Charles having to be at the mercy of a care system that is pretty much ineffectual if you can't afford to pay for it.
Cancer is a horrible thing to have to deal with - and statistics say that 1 in 2 people will face cancer at some point. So he isn't really unique is he?
I know of families who have dealt with innumerable family members dying of cancer and others that have never been touched by it. Some cancers are triggered by what we do in our lives maybe smoking for example and others get it that are the fittest and healthiest people we know but they still get it!!
It is the quirks of the human body and that we are all individual and that we either get lucky or don't when it comes to cancer!!

3peassuit · 06/02/2024 13:59

No, I assume it was caught early and the King will have the best possible care. It’s horrible for his family but they will cope as so many of us have had to when a loved one has a cancer diagnosis. The country will carry on as before.

Hygeelady · 06/02/2024 14:01

SecondUsername4me · 06/02/2024 12:07

Why "she"? She is one of two parents. They both have a lot of help.

Because the question was in regards to Kates operation. She will have a lot of help whilst she recovers. I never mentioned the children, you assumed that.

Peaceandquietandacuppa · 06/02/2024 14:04

No and it astounds me that you are. There is a lot to be “unnerved” by in the world, but a very rich, entitled man being diagnosed with cancer isn’t one of them.

ginasevern · 06/02/2024 14:05

CaramelMac · 06/02/2024 13:38

Yeah, but that’s fairly unusual.

It's not unusual in that family. They live good long lives because they are free from the burdens of their subjects. The very best food, private health care, access to medicines that would be out of the reach of most. No worries about mould on the bedroom walls or praying your car gets through it's MOT otherwise you lose your zero hours job.

Maddy70 · 06/02/2024 14:06

Christ, I am in the middle of chemo and im not unnerved by my own, why would I be unnerved by his?

IsawwhatIsaw · 06/02/2024 14:07

I don’t feel unnerved at all.
Because he’ll get the best care available immediately.
I was unnerved waiting 13 hours in A and E for a bed. That was frightening.

Harry rushing hime, IM personal O, means that he is worried sick NOT that his father is seriously ill, but that his brother will be acting as regent, and won't listen to H's bullish!t.

I think he'll try to bully the king into giving him a handout, or even joint regency.

I hope the King isn't seriously ill, but he will be having the very best of medical care, doesn't have to worry about his family's financial position and really the only stress he will be under is the stress he has been under since Megxit - I just hope that Prince Harry doesn't try to bully him the way have has for the last three years, and the way he tried to bully the late queen.

I don't think the Parkles give a monkey's about anyone except themselves. They have jumped into action because the King is ill - but how long has Thomas Markle been ill, and hasn't even had a "get well" card? The cynic in me says that that's because there isn't a Netflix series in Thomas Markle.

The colossal amount of public money that will be spent if the worst happens unnerves me when people are having to rely on food banks to survive.

I have to admit that I hope that I the worst did come to the worst, that their private money would be used to cover any expenses. They are billionaires, after all, and surely could read the room.
