Does anyone else feel unnerved by the news about King Charles?

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 06/02/2024 11:53

Yes I know this belongs in the Royal section but more traffic here for people feeling like I do.

King Charles has cancer, I am sure William is wondering if he will become King sooner than he anticipated. It makes me wonder too if Kate will be okay due to her recent surgery - William really needs her by his side if he is going to take on the Big Job.

Harry rushing home feels bad to me. I mean, it's good that he is coming to see his dad but it makes me feel as though it's serious - I just hope, hope it's not pancreatic cancer - but I just don't have a good feeling.

The Queen's only been gone 16 months. I feel out of sorts. Anyone else?

It's not unusual in that family. They live good long lives because they are free from the burdens of their subjects. The very best food, private health care, access to medicines that would be out of the reach of most. No worries about mould on the bedroom walls or praying your car gets through it's MOT otherwise you lose your zero hours job.

That’s good old capitalism! Some people get the comforts wealth can buy and the rest of us live in perpetual fear of what might happen next that we can’t afford! It’s a joy.

RandomPoster456 · 06/02/2024 14:09

I don’t feel unnerved but when I first saw the news my first feeling was sadness. It’s always awful when anyone has cancer.

IchGlaubMeinSchweinPfeift · 06/02/2024 14:10

Not really, no. Essentially, elderly man has cancer. It's sad on a personally level for anyone to go through cancer, but it's not more was because it's a "royal".

I'm not bothered about the Royals. Always a shame to be ill, but I would imagine they get the very best of everything, lucky them. I do wonder whether the country can afford another state funeral and coronation so soon after the last spectable. But at least each monarch further away from QE2 is a step nearer to abolishing the farce, as I don't simply don't see the goodwill extending down the generations.

Exactly this.

couiza · 06/02/2024 14:21

The main feeling I get is that William seems to be totally unprepared for his future role as King if that happens anytime soon.

I don't recall seeing much of him speaking, meeting the plebs and having any kind of charisma at all. Not that charm and presence are essential to be monarch, but let's face it, if it wasn't for the bits of information and photos trickled out to the "subjects" we would hardly know they exist!

I do feel there are more of those who are indifferent now, than those who are obsequious, sycophantic and adoring. Those days are dwindling anyway.

So in summary, no I'm not unsettled, but not looking forward to the next reign either. W seems too aloof and lazy to me. Maybe he has another side that we haven't seen yet though.....

I wish KC well, as I would anyone going through this awful disease.

Jioyt · 06/02/2024 14:25

NerrSnerr · 06/02/2024 12:48

I suppose you know this because you spoke to him do you?

I'm not particularly bothered either way about the Meghan and Harry stuff but it is funny how many people KNOW what they're thinking and why they do things (I think it's because many people have a royal fantasy life running in their head and they struggle to separate their own imagination from real life).

This.

Bulkypeepants · 06/02/2024 14:26

I couldn't be any less interested to be honest. My dad died from cancer three months ago. He would have had an extra few months had he being able to access scans, results and his treatment in a more timely manner than what he did via the NHS. Everyone has to die of something at some time, why is this man anymore special than the rest of us? The ridiculous amount of privilege that he has will mean he gets the best and most timely care possible. It's unfair and has a previous poster pointed out, the royal family is a total anachronism.

Surroundedbyfools · 06/02/2024 14:27

No. I feel fine: yes it’s a shame I wouldn’t wish ill health on anyone but ffs I’ve got enough of my own to look after without sitting worrying about the royals: I’m sure he has access to the best care which is more than most of us

hotpotlover · 06/02/2024 14:30

Not really.

I had a health visitor appointment today. My house is a bit too hot.
Traffic was bad today.

Life goes on, the planet keeps spinning.

Life in the UK does not depend on the royal family.

Punsandroses · 06/02/2024 14:33

As someone who was initially diagnosed in October and still waiting for a treatment plan, I felt really cross by the announcement. No one wishes this on anyone but the fact is as others have said he will get the world's best treatment.
Unlike thousands of others who scramble to get an initial diagnosis, wait weeks for a consultants appointment, wait around and worry how they will pay their bills (I'm very fortunate in that I don't), it's all those people my heart goes out to.
I'm not as hard hearted as I sound but people shouldn't be dying because of this terrible mis management of the NHS.

chitthechat · 06/02/2024 14:34

No. Someone local-ish to me just passed away in their 30's from cancer leaving behind young children. It is sad when we hear of someone unwell and with a possibly life limiting disease, but there are average joes going through much worse than what we have heard of King Charles.

Tubbytenbums · 06/02/2024 14:34

No

CucumberBagel · 06/02/2024 14:34

This is exactly why he should have abdicated.

dayswithaY · 06/02/2024 14:37

I think you’re getting a hard time here, OP. I can understand why you and probably lots of people, feel unsettled. The Queen and Prince Philip were a feature in our lives for such a long time and Charles went through a difficult patch PR wise with the Diana/Camilla years. When he became King he seemed delighted and ready for the role.

William seems a bit disinterested and surly. Kate is recovering from surgery and their children (rightly) are their priority.

It was always on the cards for Charles to have a short reign but no one predicted this.

Or he could recover quickly and it will be business as usual.

You’re not alone in feeling this way, despite the opinions here.

mathanxiety · 06/02/2024 14:39

rollonretirementfgs · 06/02/2024 12:27

Harry only rushed back because he would be branded a cold hearted arsehole if he didn't! Everything he does is fir the sake of his reputation and public persona, nothing else

So what you're saying is he can't win?
Go to see dad immediately? Attention seeker.
Leave it a few weeks? Cold-hearted arsehole.

I understand that there are people who don't like him, but it has got to the point of being ridiculous now.

ilovesooty · 06/02/2024 14:40

I think referring to Meghan as "that American witch" is utterly disgusting.

I think referring to Meghan as "that American witch" is utterly disgusting.

Isn't it just! Is it any wonder she doesn't want to live in this country anymore? Or that Harry doesn't either.

The remark was probably made by someone who would claim that they care little about the royals.

TheSandHurtsMyFeelings · 06/02/2024 14:44

ilovesooty · 06/02/2024 14:40

I think referring to Meghan as "that American witch" is utterly disgusting.

Indeed.

What I do find 'unnerving' is the fact that Harry and Meghan appear to live rent-free in the vitriol-filled heads of so many people whom I'm sure appear fairly normal from the outside.

That is definitely unsettling...

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 06/02/2024 14:46

LurchingTowardsYourFavouriteCity · 06/02/2024 12:20

I feel unsettled by the headlines this week that death rates from cancer in this country are worsening because of delayed diagnosis and treatment thanks to Tory destruction of the NHS. Of course, this doesn't apply to the king, who has the luxury of early detection and immediate treatment.

I feel unsettled by the prospect of the state forking out billions on another state funeral and coronation, should he not recover. As the news comes in that there is a crisis in child health due to the cost of living and the rapidly widening gulf between rich and poor. All the while, infant mortality rises, under-fives suffer poor health and tooth decay and another generation grows up crushed by poverty. But all of us are expected to feel concern over an extraordinarily wealthy and protected family facing illness and loss just as all of us do, safe in the knowledge they'll never have to wait months to see a doctor or have to pull out their own teeth as no dentist is available, or worry about getting paltry sickness benefits to keep a roof over their family's head.

Spot on!

Alalalalalongalalalalalonglonglilong · 06/02/2024 12:40

Well I'm not British or from a commonwealth country, so i dont care about royals but I don't like a lot of the comments here. I'm reading that people do not have sympathy for sick people if they have wealth. Sure have additional sympathy and concern for those struggling but the 'he's rich and old so who cares' attitude is very mean IMO. The royal family have a very hard life, most of you would not swap if you could. All the money and privilege in the world could never compensate for having your whole life like a circus performance with no agency.

They really don't have a hard life - how hard is it to turn up, cut a ribbon and smile? The Royal Family do very much have agency. They don't have to stay and perform like circus monkeys, but when they try and get out, they turn against themselves, as do certain factions of the British Public.

I'm four pages in, and nowhere have I seen any 'he's rich and old so who cares' attitudes. Charles has contributed very little to this country. At least with Queenie, there was a sense of overriding duty to her country, if nothing else, so it's not unreasonable to wish him well and move on with our lives.

CucumberBagel · 06/02/2024 14:46

Unusualactualname · 06/02/2024 13:13

Yeah I'm unnerved - by the prospect of spending obscene amounts of money on a state funeral, followed by obscene amounts of money on a coronation. They are anachronisms, the lot of them, and the sooner we get rid of them the better.

This.

Flo22 · 06/02/2024 14:49

No just another human being with cancer. Doesn't change anything with me

Lianna077 · 06/02/2024 14:49

Yes I feel unsettled and very sad although of course we don’t know the prognosis. There’s no right way to feel here, if you feel unsettled then that’s the way you feel and you don’t have to justify it. Don’t let anyone else’s comments unsettle you further.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 06/02/2024 14:51

No, I don't feel the tiniest bit unnerved. I feel sympathy for anyone who has cancer, but who is sitting on the throne and what they are up to has zero impact on my life or state of mind. I don't care what any of them do, and I find it utterly ridiculous the way people go on about the Royals' behaviour and motives, as though they actually know them. Baffling!

user146990847100 · 06/02/2024 14:52

Sort of. I’m having a fairly stressful start to the year, all stuff i have little to no control over, so bad news, even when it’s just something on the news makes me feel worse. It just all adds up!
Having said that, KC is an old man who’s had a wonderful life. There are two mums at our school both with terminal cancer - Leaving kids with no mum is a whole different level of sadness.
