Does anyone else feel unnerved by the news about King Charles?

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 06/02/2024 11:53

Yes I know this belongs in the Royal section but more traffic here for people feeling like I do.

King Charles has cancer, I am sure William is wondering if he will become King sooner than he anticipated. It makes me wonder too if Kate will be okay due to her recent surgery - William really needs her by his side if he is going to take on the Big Job.

Harry rushing home feels bad to me. I mean, it's good that he is coming to see his dad but it makes me feel as though it's serious - I just hope, hope it's not pancreatic cancer - but I just don't have a good feeling.

The Queen's only been gone 16 months. I feel out of sorts. Anyone else?

@moofolk

I feel unnerved that people care more about one obscenely wealthy man than they do about thirty thousand people killed in Gaza.

@IncompleteSenten

What makes you think that? How do you know how much different people care about different issues?

This. ^ It does my head in, when people say/assume that if you care about one thing, you can't possibly care about another... ie; if you care about Prince Charles - you don't give a shit about tens of thousands of people dying in a war. FFS, it is possible to care about both. 🙄.. Such a ridiculous, narrow-minded comment.

@viridiano

Well there aren't any threads about Gaza trending here at the moment, and this is all over the front pages of the news.

To be fair there has been a LOT of discussion about Gaza/Israel for a number of months now. It has dominated the British news for 4 months ... I don't see the harm in something else being covered for a few says. The news has been saturated with Gaza/Israel for 4 months now.

I don’t honestly care about the impact on the monarchy, but I feel sympathy for anyone and their family going through cancer.

Purplecatshopaholic · 06/02/2024 20:26

Nope. I struggle to muster even indifference to this news. I am unsettled and out-of-sorts about many things in this country at the moment. KC is not one of them!

What a totally over the top and stupid responce. There are so many cancers it can be. Please go give your head a very big wobble.

No. Simple.

Speak for yourself. I don't look up to either of these demographics, or indeed to anyone much.

Same here!

Love the 'grief Olympics' idea! Reminds of of someone using the phrase 'competitive mourning' in the aftermath of the late Queen's death.

porridgeisbae · 06/02/2024 20:43

I'm not overly into the royals, but it seems a shame as he hasn't been king for long.

I agree about Harry coming back.

rustlerwaiter · 06/02/2024 20:47

I feel for the guy, I'm no monarchist but regardless of who he is he's a human being diagnosed with a horrible disease and I hope he can beat it.

This morning I was listening to Radio X travelling to work and while it was on the news it wasn't something they made a huge deal out of.

At work someone had Radio 2 on and there's a guy on there who's tone and the way he went on about it so much would make you think KC had been given weeks to live.

There's a fine line between reporting what's happening and blowing it up to be something it isn't, unfortunately it's something certain sections of the media will pick up and run with.

I feel sorry for anyone with cancer who has long waits on the NHS and money worries.

indeed. I think I’ll reserve any concern for strangers to those raiding kids in war zones, those struggling to eat and those with similar health concerns with less privilege. I wouldn’t wish this on them. They are human but there are people far far worse off and the monarch in this country has no bearing on our daily lives.

AuntySueDoesntGiveAShit · 06/02/2024 20:52

Why on earth would you feel unnerved? How will it have any effect on your day to day life?

Notcontent · 06/02/2024 20:54

Actually, what really unnerved me was that he is starting his treatment immediately when most people have to wait for weeks or longer.

Newsenmum · 06/02/2024 20:55

He’s a 75 year old man. I don’t mean to be unkind, but I’m not especially surprised.

guineverehadgreeneyes · 06/02/2024 21:00

JohnMytton: "Everyone looks up to some royalty, whether it be the House of Windsor or in the glossy celeb magazines."

I don't. I couldn't give a stuff about "celebs" and I don't look up to royalty, either.

Meowandthen · 06/02/2024 21:02

Why on earth would anyone be “unnerved”? I don’t know them personally and I’m pretty sure you don’t.

How very bizarre. Looks like yet another case of people trying to make something about them.

PinkyFlamingo · 06/02/2024 21:04

The level of vitriol and hatred towards Harry and Meghan is a really quite scary but also laughable, people proclaiming they know what he's like. Unless you know do wine personally no you don't. You're all mad.

anus horribilis?

Hyldgegrub · 06/02/2024 21:17

I’m getting rather annoyed with the misinformation around the NHS and cancer treatment. Both my parents and many others are still benefiting from the 2 week wait pathway. It’s all been very smooth and relatively quick for my parents. Stop misrepresenting reality and scaremongering.

King Charles will not have a better outcome than my dead parent, who did not die due to poor care. The NHS did the absolute best they could last year. My other parent has been diagnosed, assessed and op booked within 6 weeks. I’m happy with that.

I think it’s really disrespectful to NHS staff to claim that private care for cancer is better, when it really isn’t true for a lot of people with cancer. It would have made fuck all difference for my parents.

MCOut · 06/02/2024 21:20

TheSnakeCharmer · 06/02/2024 17:44

I find it peculiar that Harry, who no longer enjoys a close relationship with his father, immediately jumped on a plane to see him for a very short fleeting visit. If they caught it early and it was treatable, then surely you wouldn't just jump straight on a plane. It would make more sense to visit for a holiday and spend quality time with him in a few weeks. So either it's more serious than they're making out, or Harry is flying over as part of a PR attempt to avoid criticism and possibly with a view to taking on some duties in time in order to increase his profile.

This is a very very normal thing to do for families with members in different countries, especially for a parent whether you’re pissed with each other or not.

Unnerved? By an elderly man I don't know having cancer and getting speedy, timely, excellent treatment for it?

No.

I'm much more unnerved by the story of poor Theresa Jones this article - NHS Wales: Day-long ambulance wait after care home fall www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-68211110

She was totally let down by the NHS.

This sadly happens all the time. I work in the NHS and a five, six or seven hour wait isn't unusual at all sadly. They probably left this lady even longer as she wasn't alone. 😕.
The Tories blame the ambulance staff and the daily Mail readers believe the Tories.
What have we become?

MCOut · 06/02/2024 21:22

@Hyldgegrub What is disrespectful, is to assume that your experience is universal.

Yes, staff do their best, but it is equally out of order for you to be taking people to task, when they may have had to assume the consequences of long wait times, that you were fortunate enough to not have to experience.

Labour are responsible for the NHS in Wales.

There’s no 2 week cancer pathway here.

…and what is wrong with waiting a few weeks for treatment on the NHS? If you don’t want to wait you can speed it up by going private like Charles. But the prognosis is unlikely to change, it is likely to make zero difference clinically to wait a few weeks.

Obviously some cases will be more urgent.
