Have you ever seen anything weird being transported?

Last summer we were heading back from a day at the coast. There was an estate car in front of us which looked like it had a large dog in the back. As we got closer we realised it was a really small horse!
Have you seen anything strange while out and about?

Oh I forgot the elephant being led down a very busy Bangkok street. That may not count.

aitchteeaitch · 05/02/2024 15:25

The cockpit/front end of a huge airliner on a low-loader. I think it was a flight simulator or something. It was facing backwards, and it was a bit unnerving to say the least, when I drove round a bend and came face-to-face with that thing right in front of me!

A giraffe being transported along the M4.
An ostrich in the back of a SUV near Bristol.

We get really big stuff here. I can’t imagine this on an English road.

Video said it was 96 metres - there are occasionally not far off as large loads transported in the UK (see https://www.walesonline.co.uk/news/wales-news/ginormous-78m-long-abnormal-load-28435850) for example but it's very very rare - for obvious reasons really, much smaller and busier roads than Canada and easier ocean access as an alternative.

Nuclear warheads and WMD being driven to Faslane in huge army convoys through Scotland.

dodobookends · 05/02/2024 15:34

Driving through the country lanes near here one day, I started noticing a few onions in the road. Went a mile or two, and started seeing more and more of them. Finally caught up with a tractor and trailer, to see that his load of onions was gently dropping one by one out of the slightly-open little hatch at the back of the trailer. I turned off at that point to go another way, and I always did wonder how far he was going, and how much of his load he had left by the time he got there. 😂

A full sized dalek in a trailer at the side of the road near stone henge

I have also seen a steam train on the back of a truck. I guess I hadn't really thought about how they moved them about before.

I have it on good authority that there are multiple 'thomas's' and the faces are removed at the end of the day Confused

PuttingDownRoots · 05/02/2024 15:40

On different occasions...

Steam trains (3 times!!)
A small aircraft
A tank (in a non military area... I was used to them in ans around army camps)

We sometimes get road closure alerts for moving wind turbine blades. Due to the turning circle, they have to go around a roundabout the wrong way, plus they move very slow.

mathanxiety · 05/02/2024 15:48

An entire house - an old Victorian house, wood construction. It was on a wide flatbed house-hauling vehicle, and all the overhead power lines had to be taken down to allow it to navigate the streets. Half the town had no power for the duration of the move. It made the local news.

Pootles34 · 05/02/2024 15:50

We once went past the batmobile and the batboat on the back of a trailer. DP may have done some dodgy driving so I could get a better photo of it...

mathanxiety · 05/02/2024 15:52

I also got stuck behind a massive truck transporting a wind turbine blade. They're bigger than I had imagined.

Tarkan · 05/02/2024 15:56

We once saw a massive decorated unicorn being wheeled along the dual carriageway through our town. It had been created by a local artist and it was being moved from her house to the visitor centre.

Tarkan · 05/02/2024 15:58

The unicorn. This was the only photo I got though.

PickUpFullOfPinkCarnations · 05/02/2024 15:59

Some of these are putting my tiny horse to shame 😂

Large chunks of buildings on the move are certainly odd to see.

I think the weirdest I've seen was in the Little Karoo desert of South Africa where we suddenly noticed that feathers were being blown into the windscreen then looked ahead to see a truck full of ostriches in front of us - you could just see their heads bobbing up and down over the top. And two or three poor blokes standing in the trailer with the ostriches evidently to wrangle them somehow. Did not envy that job!

SaunteringOnBy · 05/02/2024 16:01

They installed a wind turbine blade in the centre of Hull a few years back, I saw that being transported. Blooming thing was absolutely massive, they don't look it when you see them spinning, but they're huge.

Push-me-Pull-you in vehicular incarnation😁

Canyousewcushions · 05/02/2024 16:07

I saw the actual Boaty McBoatface sub heading down the M6.

I was beside myself with excitement but by the time we were close enough to read the name and realise what it was, we were passing it too fast foe me to be able to get a photo 🤣

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 05/02/2024 16:12

I saw this going up the Thames one Christmas. I did look it up afterwards and they were fibreglass replicas not real cars.

11NigelTufnel · 05/02/2024 16:15

I came on to say Thomas the Tank Engine, but it appears he is much more common than I realised. Hardly unusual if that many people have seen him so often.

In India, two men on a moped with a live and normal sized pig. It was hog tied, fittingly, and had a very confused expression. I presume things went south for the poor creature pretty quickly after that.

ErrolTheDragon · 05/02/2024 16:19

I don't think I can beat my brother's sighting of an Apollo capsule on a truck. (He was at imperial college, it was on its way to the science museum.)

CostaDelOrchard · 05/02/2024 14:44

A train, it was the same company from Train Truckers and my son never forgave me for not taking him with that day

A train. In steam. On a low loader. Through the channel tunnel. Had to get very special permission for that.

CMOTDibbler · 05/02/2024 16:31

My parents used to be responsible for a lot of people goggling at them in traffic. It was bad enough with a van full of goats, some of whom would be staring out of the back windows, and one in particular would be resting her chin lovingly on dads shoulder as he drove. But mum would drive the babies round in the back of her hatchback Metro, so there would be a gaggle of small goats looking out of all the windows and you'd see people staring and pointing
