What disturbs me is someone, posting she loves powerful breeds and they shouldn’t be banned as not all owners are irrepressible, on a thread where another human has lost her life, in the dogs home, where they didn’t need ti be muzzled and we need to assume she was comfortable going there. Their nature took over.

as long as there is a potential for irresponsible owners then dogs like this should be made extinct. As long as there is potential for these dogs to attack and kill, then these dogs should be made extinct.

how many people have to die before those that luffs them accept it.

There will presumably (thankfully) be no alternative to putting the litter of pups to sleep, as it is now illegal to rehome them?

Poor lady, and poor young lad who has seen this horror - and, having already lost his mother, is now going to lose his father to prison. I hope that is not used as a sob story to keep this scum on a suspended sentence, the boy will be far better away from this life.

As for anyone reading this and still trotting out the ‘owner not the breed’ comment and thinking their dogs would never do this because they’re a better owner. I’m sure this man thought that yesterday morning, too. It IS the breed.

I suspect they will be humanely euthanised by a vet.

I have to agree with you. Just hope this poor child gets all the help he needs and is young enough to get a second go at a decent life away from this environment. A desperately depressing situation.

This and the acid attack this week have just made me despair

There is no need for these kinds of dogs to exist, there simply isn’t. I know a poster up thread said that smaller breeds don’t interest her, well tough. It’s like saying that you really like machine guns.
These dogs have been bred with one single purpose, to be powerful animals that intimidate and can injure people.

The worry is that people who do have dogs like this won’t take them to a proper vet for care as they know that they vet will report them. So these poor creatures will not be properly cared for.
I know a local animal charity to me had a few dumped on them just days before the ban.

It's akin to cat owners suddenly demanding to own Pumas or something because they don't like domestic cats.

As for the people claiming 'it's the owner, not the breed'. When was the last time you saw a Chihuahua herding sheep or a spaniel used as a guard dog? Every breed has its personality and temperament characteristics. It's why Dogo Argentinos for example are banned in the UK and other countries. Several types of dog are banned here because they need specialist handling and to be under control at all times. An owner can help to bring out the best in a dog, but they're still subject to their breed's temperament which can easily override training, especially if the dog is sick, stressed, in pain, hungry, in a bad mood, overwhelmed etc.

If Jesus turned up on my road with a pitbull, He wouldn't be there for long.

wetotter · 04/02/2024 17:33

The grandson is 11 (according to the BBC) and ran out of the house to get help. Thank goodness he got out

Beeb article also says that the dogs were destroyed at the scene. If they could not be safely approached (really quite likely) then yes they would be shot.

The puppies may well have to be euthanised, because it is no longer legal to rehome them, and as they've been living with an utter shit of an owner who was unconcerned they were fighting, it's possible they will never be reliable to be kept as pets. I mean, puppies do fight - it's part of being a puppy - but it's usually good natured play-fighting. Not the sort of thing you have to try to separate with a broom FFS

It's a horrible event, and shows just how shitty some owners are. And it does seem the shits are over-represented in ownership of this breed (and other "status" dogs). No word yet, but I'd be amazed if any of these dogs were properly exempted, muzzle trained, or even trained at all

Doodleflips · 04/02/2024 17:34

@hattie43 err, don’t be looking down on people in social housing, most of us are perfectly law abiding. We’re not a lesser class because we’re skint!

Poor Esther, and God bless that poor 11 year old boy for what he's been through losing his mum and now this.
Quoting police here "I would also like to thank the local people who had tried to get into the house to help Esther Martin. You should be proud."

Well done to the Jaywick locals who fought off the dog with garden spades, there are good normal people there and community is important. Who knows maybe they saved another life with their actions. Please don't paint all poor with the same brush as the dog owner.

Very well done to the officers. So sorry this happened when it shouldn't have.

Gloriosaford · 04/02/2024 17:45

The owner, in the daily mail, I guess he's not able to grasp that Ali G, is a satirical fictional character.
What a ridiculous twit.

TheSnakeCharmer · 04/02/2024 17:48

Doesn't the aspiring rapper look like an absolute idiot, especially with a tea towel on his head. The whole gangster/music/gang culture is pathetic. We look at the worst aspects of the states then try to emulate it over here. Social media is so banal and the.music industry really needs to tidy up it's act. People need to aspire to so much more.

Ap24 · 04/02/2024 17:48

And the owner was selling XL puppies, on Facebook, during November for £500 each. How lovely.

lieselotte · 04/02/2024 17:50

The dog needs to be put down and the owner to go to jail for a very long time.

But I agree with a pp he'll probably get away with a suspended sentence because dogs are cute or some such bollocks.

There was a thread on here the other day where the owner had bought an unknown bully breed from "the woman down the road" and she was worried because she hadn't registered it because she couldn't afford to.

Her worry didn't extend to the fact that it had extremely long nails (she uploaded a picture), it looked a lot like a Pitbull, or basically anything else.

In her posts she sounded like the typical irresponsible owner who's dog ends up killing someone. These people are everywhere and if any of you live near them, please report them.

I think the long nails are due to the dog being likely to attack you if you try to trim them.

sugarapplelane · 04/02/2024 18:04

Clacton used to be quite respectable when my Grandparents lived there in the 60’s 70”s and early 80’s.
Looks like the area has gone downhill massively

Poor woman.. looks like the dogs were protecting their puppies when she was told to put the broom in the midst of fighting/playing puppies.. irresponsible dog owners to blame

WilmaWonka · 04/02/2024 18:10

I can’t get over that poor boy at 11 years old having lost his mum only 2 years ago and now witnessing the horrific death of his Grandmother.

Poor woman, it will have been a terrifying and agonising death.

For the sake of an absolute scumbag’s want to keep dangerous animals in a family home.

I thought Scotland was about to bring in the same rules?

This is something both countries should have agreed on and implemented at the same time.

WithACatLikeTread · 04/02/2024 18:15

Scotland are apparently bringing in a ban later this year so where does that leave those dogs he is bringing up?

Ah but the SNP think they are better than the English. Hope it doesn't cost anyone up in Scotland their lives.

ViscousFluidFlow · 04/02/2024 18:20

@Flamme to make sure it’s registered? I’m assuming in its own garden it doesn’t need to be muzzled? My friends DS is an officer so will ask.
