Who would have thought….. the plan to ban them, muzzle them, register them, has not worked. It’s just like when they call for an amnesty on knives, and ask for them all to be dropped off at a nearest collection point. A lot of people who own XL bullies are irresponsible idiots, just like most who own knives are criminals, who won’t be dropping off their weapons anytime soon.

Messyhair321 · 04/02/2024 18:26

That is awful, however I am cautious about the details given its from a newspaper.
I did not know Jaywick was still an area that people actually lived given that the programme has disappeared, just hoped the local council had seen sense and moved everyone out into proper houses

LFlerr · 04/02/2024 18:27

I went to visit my DM today , the police were due to visit to look at the video she took yesterday.

Cut through Jaywick on the way home to watch the kite surfers and walk on the beach.

Unless you’ve been there you cannot understand the level of deprivation people are living with. Houses (shacks) rotting from the outside in - rows and rows of gardens full of broken furniture, rubbish, burnt out or collapsed houses, roads in ruin. It really is beyond comprehension in a 1st world country.

The actual beach at Jaywick is beautiful, arguably nicer than Clacton. The whole area needs razing to the ground and re-building. The people who live there need intensive support to break the poverty cycle and it needs ordinary working class people to move there. I’m not arguing for a full on gentrification, god knows how many decent working class areas have been fucked over by the middle class but it needs something and it needs it quickly.

By this time last year there had been two fatal dog attacks so time will tell if it has reduced the numbers.

Where do you think they would have gone?

Horrifying awful and tragic 😔
I had naively hoped that the legislation would have dealt with this menace 😔

Why BSL will never work.

Nobody seems to want to address that it’s us- we did this. We created them and will continue to do so. Humans are the problem.

Messyhair321 · 04/02/2024 18:32

hmm, looks like the mum of the puppies got really upset because someone took a broom to them, I suspect that the house was overcrowded with dogs, the dogs may have been badly treated, possibly underfed, and dogs can get very upset if they think their puppies are going to be hurt, reading between the lines, the dogs weren't being kept in great condition, and what an ill thought out idea, having children around them. RIP

StaunchMomma · 04/02/2024 18:32

I guess we'll hear in time if the dogs were registered or not.

These attacks are going to keep happening because owners will not accept their dogs are capable of it. It's nothing short of stupidity.

If the poor woman was already scared of the dogs, why weren't they kept away from her or muzzled in the homes while she was there?

That poor child has watched his Grandma get ripped to pieces.

I hope the Dad gets jail time, I really do. Irresponsible dog owners whose lax attitudes lead to the death of others deserve the book throwing at them.

Titsywoo · 04/02/2024 18:33

The problem is the rules generally aren't followed by the people who are the biggest issue so they carry on regardless until something happens. I was walking down the road locally the other day (a few miles from where I live) and an XL bully not on lead ran up to me and DS. We ignored the dog and carried on walking then saw a dishevelled looking man following the dog (about 20m behind) shouting for him. It's not unusual in certains areas and they don't give a shit that it is illegal. I find it scary as hell.

Does that suggest the Mum was an XL, then?

Disgraceful if so.

Sarvanga38 · 04/02/2024 18:36

Again people are banging on about what might have caused a dog to attack. (On a link someone posted today, it was the owner having the temerity to put some shoes on.) Yes, maybe it was that the poor woman tried to break up fighting puppies.

How can people really not see that with this breed, it’s not the fact that a dog might attack. We all know that any dog is theoretically capable of that. The issue with this breed is that when they do, grown adults end up dead, because no one can stop them.

Edited

The Sun is reporting that they were not registered

This. It makes me rage that these dogs are blamed for the mess we are in with it, the issue is that people don't want to accept they have a responsibility as owners to manage their pets, train and properly care for them. Not breed them & use them as status symbols

Rightsraptor · 04/02/2024 18:38

@LFlerr - I don't know the area at all but, from what you've described, I'd guess the houses are fairly near the beach. If that's so, they needed even more tending than more inland properties as (you'll know this) the sea/salt & winds etc cause a lot of damage to buildings.

So did the local authority build them and abandon them to their fate? Along with the people in them.

Poor woman.

Westfacing · 04/02/2024 18:39

The houses in Jaywick were originally built as holiday chalets.

Scotland are apparently bringing in a ban later this year so where does that leave those dogs he is bringing up?

Probably killed or running around our streets because no home checks were done on them before bringing them up.

DreamTheMoors · 04/02/2024 18:43

I’m just trying to wrap my mind around the terror and horror and disbelief and agony of the victim as she was going through that.
And I can’t - it’s unimaginable.

They were built after the war as temporary housing for East End families who lost their homes in the blitz. Some have been replaced but just by more Chalets.

The area is a wreck. They are literally on the seafront with yes as you’ve said the wind and salt exposure. The side streets between the rows of houses are barely wide enough for one car, no pavements, rubbish everywhere. It’s awful to see. God only knows what it would be like living there.

Even the local community centre has seen better days.

One thing which always makes me smile when I drive past, their local pub is called “Never say die”!

Think I would be worried if I was in Scotland. The amount of them sent up there.

I am and we are.

Although I am in nice middle-class leafy suburbia Glasgow, all the dogs round here are labracockapoodoodle type fluffy things.

Just as in England, it will be the neds on the estates without two brain cells to rub together who are keeping these things and "rescuing" these things and spouting crap about how they are big softies, wouldn't hurt a fly etc etc.

GuinnessBird · 04/02/2024 18:48

Every XL Bully should be forcibly removed from their owners property and shot, I know I have said this before but I really cannot stand those dogs.

LFlerr · 04/02/2024 18:49

I’ve never understood why the council don’t just have a focused week long clear up.

Turn up on a Monday with 50 community skips and clear out all the rubbish from the front gardens. Pull down the derelict homes (even a black lot would be better). Bring in intensive clean up crews to fix the pavements and roads. Help them to clear their homes/gardens/streets out.

Give them even a small bit of pride for the love of god

LlynTegid · 04/02/2024 18:50

The law should be changed. If your dog or indeed other pet harms you such that there is injury requiring hospital treatment or death, it should be as if you inflicted it yourself. Animals are sentient beings and the law has a concept of joint enterprise.

In this case, manslaughter charges.

bombastix · 04/02/2024 18:51

Rubbish- bar the owners from any social housing or indeed anyone who helps keep them in public housing. People need to live in safe places and men like this enjoy terrifying their neighbours. They should not be catered for.

From what I've read it was built as a holiday resort with chalets in the 30s - after the war east-end families were moved there.
