@Gloriosaford I was walking along the canal, houses back on to it on one side, the actual path side has open countryside for miles. There was an XL bully in a garden, I mean it’s their own home. I expect attacks and deaths still but a fall in random attacks on the street and now mainly people killed in their own homes that are owners. I am concerned for their children who have no choice and for any health visitor, social worker etc that has to do home visits.

Clacton and Jaywick Sands are severely deprived neighborhoods in England, with Clacton being in the top 1% for poverty.
Is this Clacton-upon-Sea? I know that's not the point of this thread but I have such lovely memories of a nostalgic, traditional little seaside town. How can it have deteriorated so horribly in 40 years?

It is a tragedy, and perhaps we do need even tougher laws banning large, potentially lethal dogs.

It's not an excuse to trot out your vile prejudices against the working classes. The vast majority of working class people do not recklessly own dangerous dogs which they know put others' lives at risk. There are abhorrent, irresponsible cunts in all social classes.

I don't think he is working class

Gloriosaford · 04/02/2024 14:38

There is no justification for keeping a dog capable of killing an adult. None
@WhatsTheUseOfWorrying
I completely agree with you.
Pitbull type dogs, large powerful fighting dogs, these animals are not suited to being kept as pets. No ifs or buts!

maddiemookins16mum · 04/02/2024 14:40

I’m prepared to be called a snob, but it’s often (not always) the same sort of area/social background when these awful things happen. I heard the news this morning and then they said Jaywick and I actually said out loud ‘oh what a shocker’.

Poorly educated, lack of common sense, sense of entitlement etc, it all contributes to the overall picture.

That poor woman.

God help youngsters growing up there, their future is bleak.

CandiceEatsCandiez · 04/02/2024 14:40

Just seen a picture of the poor lady, a mother to 8 and grandmother to 3 I've read. Bless them all.

So many awful things in the news ATM from mentions of War to pitbull deaths to new pandemics. I struggle to keep my kids mental health guarded and not cynical and afraid about the world.

I can see that unfortunately the ban will mean some owners just keep it a secret thereby putting anyone else in the household at risk🤬

Veggieveggiecoke · 04/02/2024 14:42

Unfortunately after seeing the headlines I guessed correctly which seaside town in Essex. This area is so deprived and soulless.
Saw a documentary about Jaywick ,so depressing and sad!
This poor lady 😢

Andthereyougo · 04/02/2024 14:53

I understand the dogs were euthanised, hopefully the pups as well. I say this as a dog lover — they’ll only have shit lives with the sort of people who’ll buy them so they’re better off pts now.
Owners breaking the ban: 3 year minimum suspended sentence per dog. Banned from owning a dog for life. That includes acquiring a dog into their household ( not mine, it’s the partner’s) plus a fine.

Dog that’s killed it’s a manslaughter charge.
Dog that’s attacked that’s GBH.

This is where the French system works, the Maire knows everyone on their patch, break the law and they call the gendarmes. They come down hard on dog owners not sticking to the law.

You can’t ignore the fact that a lot of these dogs are a status symbol for drug dealers . Not all obviously but those” types “ are not going to walk round with poodles are they .

I went on holiday there once . Never again .

thebirdsarewatchingyoucarefully · 04/02/2024 15:07

I've noticed a lot of people have French bulldogs as trendy status symbols. Not really worried about being mauled by a Frenchie though

RelativePitch · 04/02/2024 15:11

@Andthereyougo up until now the sentences have been so weak. The woman who owned the XL who killed Jack Lis was sentenced to three years, out on licence after 1 year. Most owners of fatal attack dogs haven't been sentenced to more than 4 years. I'll be interested to see what happens to the owner of the dogs who killed Iain Price as he had been spoken to by the police about his escaping, out of control dogs a number of times. Hope they throw the book at him.

I agree with all this. These dogs are not natural. They are a man-made creation, specifically bred for the very characteristics that make them killers.

If people refuse to abide by the law, the animals need to be removed from society, and if that means euthanasing every last one of them, then so be it.

Alwaysalwayscold · 04/02/2024 15:20

This must be stopped. I don't know how, but it must. Humans in this country should not own killing machines.

SerendipityJane · 04/02/2024 15:24

pasteloblong · 04/02/2024 14:13

Forgot about that 🤦🏻‍♀️

These people probably never even set foot in Waitrose. They probably think they're slumming it by having to share the roads with white van man.

Don't they have social scientists who can advise them?

I think we've all had enough of experts.

This is a horrible tragedy, and there will be pockets of bad owners who wont comply with the law.

the first article says both adult dogs were pts in the house. I am a little surprised by that. I’m not sure it’s relevant but I thought the dogs would be taken to the vets for some reason.

Ban TikTok if they've got it.

How do they pts on site? Do they just shoot them?

I hope so. I would hate to think they would put a vet at risk after it had just killed someone.

Kastri · 04/02/2024 15:38

Ive just seen the owners photo,a tatooed thug so called drill rapper. He was the ladies son in law,she was there to see her grandson. Her daughter is sadly deceased so the boy lived with the father.I dread to think how he is being brought up and what he has been exposed to
Its tragic for the family and the dogs too, they were bred by humans for all the wrong reasons,I hope this can end soon and no more tragedies.

It's true though. There is a particular type of person who owns these dogs (thick). You don't get your well-educated graduate with a good job owning them. Your average middle class office worker wouldn't touch these dogs with a barge pole. You get the local druggies who don't have a brain cell between them.

Tbh I think the fact the puppies haven't been PTS yet is completely ridiculous. The entire breed needs putting down - rotten to the core.

AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii · 04/02/2024 16:10

But but but it’s not fair that their darling fur baby who wouldn’t hurt a fly can’t run free on the beach anymore 🙄. Tells you all you need to know really

belvitas · 04/02/2024 16:11

I see people on facebook supporting the keeping of these dogs, trotting out stuff like "it's the owners not the dog"
Incorrect.
It's the combination of both. But when you've got such a huge, powerful breed with the capacity to overpower grown
men.. you've got a living breathing killing
machine. A chihuahua, even a very fucking angry, aggressive one, can't overpower a man or a woman. Or a child,
come to think of it.
But the thick bully owners don't care.
