Has anyone else seen this horrible news story? Apparently 9 people have been injured, looks like the original targets were a woman and two children.

What is WRONG with people?!

As I said I’ll take vetting

Police searches, guarantor and other as useful

It would be far better than what we have now

Notaflippinclue · 02/02/2024 14:45

Is the DNA of every illegal actually taken on arrival? If not why not.

It is not illegal to seek asylum according to international law. Nobody is illegal until they have exhausted all asylum appeals and still stay. So stop using that term.

pointythings · 02/02/2024 15:44

@EasternStandard I agree vetting might help. And to be able to do that, we need to stop faffing around with the Rwanda scheme, staff and fund the asylum system properly and set up schemes to allow people to apply and be vetted from outside the UK.

TokyoSushi · 02/02/2024 15:46

Police update just now, no sign of him although they have raided his brothers house in Leytonstone I think? He must be very, very distinctive with that injury that surely needs medical treatment. It can't be too much longer.

You cannot turn a boat around so you will not stop them arriving that way unless you also use a deterrent

Meadowfinch · 02/02/2024 15:47

My only additional comment is that the Home Office has some pretty awful values, if they think that offering asylum to someone who has already been convicted of sex offences in the UK is ok, while blithely ignoring the safety of the rest of the UK's population.

I think we need an undertaking from the Govt that asylum will not be offered to anyone convicted of violent or sexual offences, regardless of colour, race, creed or sex.

EasternStandard · 02/02/2024 15:51

And unless you think you can accommodate everyone who applies you’ll need to cap it and then you’ll get boats as you’ll have to say no to some

You can set stuff up to vet but you still need to deter the rest

Notonthestairs · 02/02/2024 16:00

There's no evidence that Rwanda will prove to be a deterrent or offer value for money - that's why it's being paid for by ministerial direction.

EasternStandard · 02/02/2024 16:02

If people want another deterrent feel free to suggest one.

Otherwise alternative location is it under international law.

YesSirMam · 02/02/2024 16:05

The children are not seriously injured as feared. They appear to be ok physically. The mother suffered life changing injuries & is sedated. My heart breaks for her

EasternStandard · 02/02/2024 16:08

It’s madness at this point, we have this set up where a criminal plays the system and attacks a woman, children and still some are ok with just letting whoever in.

Change it and get the law abiding people and the victims wouldn’t have these life changing injuries

pointythings · 02/02/2024 16:13

Well, you'll still get British perpetrators doing this stuff.

Parrotseatthemall · 02/02/2024 16:13

Hopefully the perpetrator has taken his own life before being a danger to any others..he has opted out of decent society despite what the priest said. I'm wondering if it was a an excuse to do wrong in the name of religion in some way

EasternStandard · 02/02/2024 16:14

No excuse not to vet for law abiding people entering

Meadowfinch · 02/02/2024 16:24

@pointythings Yes, but we can't prevent home grown violent offenders. You could say they are the product of our society and we are responsible for them.

We can and should reject and remove anyone from overseas who has a history of violent or sexual offences.

Whoever granted that vile man leave to remain, is responsible for that poor woman's injuries.

SoooSoSo · 02/02/2024 16:24

The Priest got played. Maybe the Priest didn't know of his past

No, it's systemic. The priest would have known.
At my confirmation at a large church a couple of years ago, there were many, unusual candidates getting baptised. I hadn't expected such a large group of native Muslim men finding Christianity all at the same time. I know someone personally though a friend who did this for asylum purposes. It's a shambles.

OhmygodDont · 02/02/2024 16:31

Church turning a blind eye to up its number. Shocked 😮 not.

A criminal offence committed in the U.K. should mean you don’t get granted any rights to stay and frankly you should be deported as soon as your sentence ends if custodial or held till your plane leaves if not. Just like U.K. criminals should be sent back to us. Don’t respect the laws of the land your in leave 👋

All asylum seekers should be fully vetted, finger printed and dna taken before they are allowed to mingle could be a slight deterrent to those here for the wrong reasons. Also bring in ID cards.

Parrotseatthemall · 02/02/2024 16:31

The vetting procedure is not fit for purpose, like so much in the UK especially a democratically elected government. It's becoming more like the wild west everyday and the them (rich) and us attitude prevails. Meanwhile many people from outside the UK see it as an opportunity to earn money, through criminality or desperation. Poking our beak in gives us an inflated look of having the answer like utopia or the enemy. Neither is the case it ain't all its cracked up to be unless you're rich

StandardLFinegan · 02/02/2024 14:45

^^. I totally ageee with everything written here.

At the same time I think we need identity cards so that we can keep track of offenders, whoever they are, as the police waste a lot of time trying to establish someone’s identity and whereabouts.

I think Refugees and Asylum seekers (not sure about those with indefinite leave to remain) already have a photo id card. So something exists.

jasflowers · 02/02/2024 16:34

EasternStandard · 02/02/2024 14:43

Well that’s what I’d change

Deter all boats and vet capped number

This guy came in on a Lorry but even so -

How is the very small chance of being sent to Rwanda going to deter anyone?

even if this scheme is going full chat, it can only take about 10k asylum seekers over 5 years, in that time time, best estimates are 200k boat arrivals, based on current trends.

So a 5% risk, less than the chance of drowning crossing the Med.

Boat arrivals so far this year are higher than over the first 4 weeks in 2023, as i said a while ago, the weather was a significant factor in reduced numbers (plus less Albanians due to returns agreement)

Meanwhile, we let in 750k per year all legally, how many of those also commit crime?

If convicted, where would you send this man back too?

Not too many flights to Kabul International, thats even if the Taliban agreed to take him back, most countries, even those with whom we have good relations with, don't always accept back asylum seekers, let alone ex cons.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 02/02/2024 16:38

IClaudine · 02/02/2024 14:55

My comment wasn't about people who have committed crime in their country of origin. I was replying to Easternstandards point about how even vetting etc. won't identify those people who haven't previously committed a crime but go on to do so once in UK.

And I agree with you. Vetting won’t solve much.
