Acid attack in Clapham

Has anyone else seen this horrible news story? Apparently 9 people have been injured, looks like the original targets were a woman and two children.

What is WRONG with people?!

Met police officer has just been shown on BBC news saying, "We take violence against women and girls very seriously". Finally, someone has said it out loud and in plain no nonsense words. They may be hollow words but at least they were said.

tempnameforadvice · 01/02/2024 18:07

@Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain you are either being deliberately obtuse or are that ignorant that you think that because people live in council estates, they throw acid in 3 year olds faces.

Surprised more people haven't jumped on your posts, tbh.

And I lived in Clapham for 30 years, so I might know it a tad better than you.

ScribblingPixie · 01/02/2024 18:07

I haven’t RTWT but do we know it was an asylum seeker? My first thought was ex DH/DP of the woman who was attacked.

Just said refugee on the BBC news.

Startingagainandagain · 01/02/2024 18:07

I just read that the guy was a known sex offender who was given a suspended sentence for a previous assault...

Yet another entitled misogynist, violent man who thinks women and kids are the property of men.

This makes me so angry.

As long as society does not accept that there is a big issue with toxic masculinity this will continue.

Abusive men get away with rape, assault and so on every day as the conviction rate is tiny and sentences are negligible.

Meanwhile women continue to be at risk...

OhmygodDont · 01/02/2024 18:07

And this lovely specimen had prior for sex offences. So now acid attacks and sex offences plus whatever his not been caught doing.

And he’ll be given 20 years, out in 10 for good behaviour to carry on abusing women no doubt

I felt I could write the script- woman finally decides to leave her abusive husband and take the kids, to ensure ( as he sees it) that they have no future without him he decides to disfigure them so they are of no use to another man. Likely to grab his passport and try to make it out of the country.

OhmygodDont · 01/02/2024 18:11

Looks like he got him self too… shame…. Not.

I haven't seen that yet about him having previous for sex offences. I just honestly despair. I could sob for women and girls.

Absolutely horrific attack. Looking at his injuries I feel so sorry for what are likely worse injuries inflicted on the mum and girls. This man will serve no purpose on this earth and his guilt is beyond doubt so if I had my way they would throw away the keys for this guy.

As for making it into an anti men debate (predictable), it's no different to that woman a few years ago who poured boiling water from the kettle on the new love interest of her ex scalding that poor woman for life - that vile woman got away with a suspended sentence I seem to remember and was photographed smirking as she left court. Both men and woman have potential to carry out heinous attacks such as these.

MaggieFS · 31/01/2024 23:14

This sort of (at this stage, seemingly) random attack makes my blood run cold. There but for the grace of God...

It isn't random. It says it was a targeted attack. My bet is either an ex or a family attack if the women brought shame to them somehow

EasternStandard · 01/02/2024 18:18

That is horrific when you think what the victims will be dealing with

TheGander · 01/02/2024 18:19

He crashed his car, maybe that’s where the injuries come from?

AmandaHoldensLips · 01/02/2024 18:20

I swear the man who did this should be put away for life with no chance of parole.

43ontherocksporfavor · 01/02/2024 18:21

The crash was minor I believe from footage. This is a case for bringing back stocks. And he had better be made to show up in court when they get him.

pointythings · 01/02/2024 18:22

@Megsan yeah, because no British men ever do things like this.

For.
Fuck's.
Sake.

Chocladore · 01/02/2024 18:23

Made me feel sick reading about this today. That poor woman and her babies. Absolutely horrific!

20 years is NOT LONG ENOUGH! I hope he’s caught soon! I‘m surprised he’s not been caught already with the cctv in and around London! And when he’s caught I really do hope that they lock him up for a very long time!

jasflowers · 01/02/2024 18:24

This sort of offence should attract a mandatory whole life tariff, his victims will live with the pain and scaring for the rest of their lives, why shouldn't he also suffer for the rest of his?

It wont though and the message to others will be "the British tolerate this behaviour"

Generally speaking, i'm not in favour of the death penalty but honestly, i can see why some people are, maybe i need to re evaluate this belief.

Agree the race thing can be a dangerous smokescreen, but do we not 'make a stronger case' by acknowledging that many predominantly Muslim countries are especially steeped in misogyny? So therefore this scumbag is an example of Entitled Male Plus? My father is from (and was raised in) a predominantly Muslim country in the Middle East and he would say that the culture of men thinking they are superior to women is far more evident in his home country that in the UK, and that violence against 'disobedient' women is almost 'acceptable' in many circles.

So surely, by acknowledging that extreme myoginy leads to violence against women - and using examples of men whose culture particularly reinforces male superiority - we can more effectively force dialogues that consider legal approaches to tackling misogynistic based hate?

I don't know if I've worded that very well, but I think i am trying to say that yes - all men of all colours and cultures can be problematic - but if we look at typically VERY male-dominated societies - we see the worst of this behaviour, so have stronger arguments for forcing action/change.

Edited

Muslim is not a 'race', it's a person who follows the religion of Islam and perhaps it should be said that many of these countries that have Muslims as the majority, have a different culture where it's within this culture, not the religion, that the misogyny thrives, mainly due to a lack of education and a misunderstanding of their religion. As often is the case, the religion is misinterpreted due to ignorance or taken out of context so that the men can abuse, have power and control over, women, many of whom are uneducated and therefore already in a vulnerable position - easy for the men to control. My point I'd like to try to make is that it is not the Muslim religion of Islam but the culture of the person's heritage that may be blamed. For those that revert to Islam, they don't have the cultural baggage so you don't generally hear of problems caused by reverts (unless they're total friggin idiots and go far beyond into extremism, which the religion of Islam forbids), and women that revert are generally white, educated and learn about the religion as is all Muslim womens' right.

My husband is an Arab Muslim, well educated, several degrees, most of his family members are doctors, engineers, teachers, etc., and loves his religion which never advocates male supremacy over women. I have never experienced from any of his male friends or family members, any utterance of disrepect towards women - on the absolute contrary! Perhaps I'm just very lucky.

In the religion, men have no right to disempower, neglect, abuse or violently punish women; men are the 'protectors' of women - but as I said, what happens is that certain cultures have these old patriarchal traditions and customs according to their geographic location, huge societal problems, a lack of education and alarming misinterpretation of their religion, all of which can be passed down through the male generations causing the harmful perception and treatment of women. Therefore any 'Muslim' man that harms a woman most likely has severe mental or emotional issues first and does not know his religion as he should, or may not even be a 'practising' Muslim. There are other countries, with other religions, that also have huge misogynistic problems, and not only directed towards women. India, for example, has had huge problems with acid attacks. Acid Attacks in India: A Socio-Legal Report

On a personal note, I suffered violence for years from my ex husband, who was white and an alcoholic. I was told by a family member 'that's just the way it is.. you have to accept it'. Like father like son.

In closing, what this man has done is absolutely disgusting and unforgiveable and I hope he receives a truly fitting punishment. Put him in a cell with women and let them hand out what punishment they think he should get - that might be some justification.

@Megsan time to go to bed now dear.

43ontherocksporfavor · 01/02/2024 18:27

He had the children in the back of the car, drove at the woman then threw one of the children violently on the ground and ran off. Sky News cctv footage.

For those closet racists jumping on this to justify their vile opinions - get your facts straight. The attacker and all victims are white. As seen by eye witnesses and reported to the police and media. Keep your prejudice to yourself.

My thoughts and prayers are with the victims ❤️
