Strange "stumbled upon" food combinations!

I'll start! I was once getting low on provisions, coming up to the big shop!
I wanted something tasty, didn't have a sandwich toaster, but wanted toasties.
So, I made corned beef and Stilton toasties, the old way, under the grill! They were absolutely the nicest thing ever!
So what's your stumbled upon strange food combination?

Baked potato and hummus. It's amazing!!

Stilton squished up with a bit of mayo and then put in a sandwich with pickled beetroot.

Are you from the US? Corned beef to you is brisket to people in the UK, our corned beef is a kind of moulded lump in an odd shaped tin which is opened with a little metal key.
Brisket is a cheapish joint that should be slow cooked, a bit like salt beef but without the salt.
I am not making it sound great am I?

Nope, Australia. Corned beef to me is a brined silverside (I think brisket/silverside are the same cut? Could be wrong) which you boil. Doesn't sound great either but it's delicious.

Is the tinned stuff with a key like beef Spam? Sounds putrid but covered in melted cheese with some sauerkraut it might be ok 😃

Used to go to a hot dog place when I lived abroad and my favourite hot dog toppings were the following:

Mashed potato
Parmesan
Mayo
Potato chipsticks (the thin ones)

All smooshed together in a panini roll in the grill so the Parmesan melted and formed a crisp coating on the potato. Mouth watering thinking of it. Like a pp I've never tried to recreate as I want to remember it as perfect as it was.

Also love Marmite toast with any kind of egg or even baked beans (and I don't even like baked beans that much.)

The Dirty Egg: butter and marmite on toast with a fried egg and cheddar cheese on top.

There's not much you can't improve with a fried egg.

Even better if you use mayo on the outside instead of butter, but it does catch quicker so you need to keep a close eye on it

I do this!!! It's lovely and crispy when it's done! Only learnt that last year, but it makes sense, with the oil in the mayonnaise! Extra tasty!

Tetley's mango and passion fruit green tea with... S&V McCoys!!

One day I happened to have them both together and was stunned at the flavour combo. I now can't enjoy one without the other.

Ham, sliced banana and cheese toasties. Delicious!

RabbitsRock · 02/02/2024 11:22

Following on from cheese & strawberry jam sandwiches, which I love, DBro used to make sandwiches with lemon curd & tinned luncheonmeat!
I once had cold roast potatoes left over from Christmas dinner with Double Gloucester & Chive cheese. Gorgeous!

Just remembered!

Cucumber dipped in sweet and sour sauce,

Delicious!

American here -

Philly cream cheese with sweet-hot pepper jelly is a classic southern snack - served with crackers.
Our favorite is a turkey sandwich made with stuffing (bread stuffing), Mayo and cranberry sauce.

Crumpets and poached eggs.

This! All th yolk drips into the little holes and it's bliss

LBOCS2 · 21/03/2024 20:28

Marmite on hot cross buns is a seasonal favourite of mine. It's sweet and salty at the same time, delicious.

Sliced apple and sliced Mars bar on a white bread sandwich!

TFZ9287 · 14/05/2024 20:42

Tomatoe, spring onion, caramelised onion, mushroom and plastic burger cheese toasty. Sounds so wrong but 😋

Scrumbleton · 15/05/2024 01:50

bagel with cream cheese and peanut butter

Australian here. That literally made my adrenaline rise & my mouth water. Far out it sounds delish.

Big toasted sandwich here with old bread, ham, Jarlsberg cheese, green tomato pickles & leftover coleslaw. Not as good as yours though!

The turkey one just sounds like a standard turkey sandwich here in the UK, rather than an odd combination!

cheese, peanut butter & coleslaw sandwiches
marmite on toast with poached eggs

@Justcallmebebes I totally agree about sausages with marmalade. Also bread fried in bacon fat spread with marmalade. Cheese and honey, but apparently lots of people know about that.

Soft boiled egg with marmite "soldiers" was a regular breakfast when I was a kid!
