Strange "stumbled upon" food combinations!

MoonWoman69 · 31/01/2024 20:40

I'll start! I was once getting low on provisions, coming up to the big shop!
I wanted something tasty, didn't have a sandwich toaster, but wanted toasties.
So, I made corned beef and Stilton toasties, the old way, under the grill! They were absolutely the nicest thing ever!
So what's your stumbled upon strange food combination?

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow ·
Yorkies with golden syrup is better.

Oh yes! Years ago (decades!) when I was still in the family home, if there were any yorkies left from the roast beef dinner (and there usually were, bless her, mum made loads) we would have the yorkies with golden syrup. My dad and I loved them!

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 01/02/2024 09:06

Yeah my mum used to make them for us too!

A whole Philadelphia cheese turned upside down on a plate with sweet chilli all over it. Such a good dip!

You can buy sweet chilli flavoured Philadelphia. Mostly I just dip my fingers in it!

Corned beef and lime pickle toastie, done in a toastie maker.

A meal created from desperation when deep in the throes of revision for university exams, but surprisingly delicious (so much so that I still remember it 19 years later, although to be fair I have never recreated it: I think I’m worried it won't live up to my memory of it!).

Potato salad on mini cheddars crackers. Or ritz. I remember this as a canape at parties in the 70s. The potato salad was alway heinz tinned but i used lidls potato salad and it was delish.

Also egg mayonnaise on warm toast.

Both are my go to comfort food.

Ooh and just remembered 20 years ago working for a company that bought in buffets for events and these included sausages with mano inserted and then cheese grilled on top. Yum

I haven't seen them for a while, but cheese and corned beef toasties used to be served in pubs in Newcastle. Your Stilton one sounds delicious.

Butter and Dijon mustard on white toast. Also marmite, peanut butter and cheddar on toast. Phwoar.

SinnerBoy · 01/02/2024 11:16

Was the Dijon mustard on toast because there was nothing else? I had HP Sauce on toast, in more straitened times.

It was actually a friend who introduced me to it - she just thought it would be tasty, and it is! Really needs to be good white bread though. And proper butter.

SinnerBoy · 01/02/2024 11:20

I do like Dijon and prefer it to English, which is a bit too strong for me.

preggo39 · 01/02/2024 11:20

@SinnerBoy Give it a go Smile

I fully intend to!

Pastry Cheese Straws dipped in coffee.

One for us Scots, if you remember Dark Iron Brew, mix Coke/Pepsi with Irn Bru, tastes exactly the same as the old Darl Iron Brew.

Boiled egg and honey in a roll.
Utterly divine.

Dustyblue · 01/02/2024 11:38

OP, this thread has made me add a beef silverside to my shopping list, I badly need corned beef now. I'll do a proper one hot for dinner & the rest on toast with many cheeses. I thank you for the inspiration.

EveryKneeShallBow · 01/02/2024 11:41

Marmite, peanut butter and lots of crunchy cold iceberg lettuce 🥬

PrayForMyBum · 01/02/2024 11:48

Ginger nut biscuits with Philadelphia on top. Like cheesecake.

Those Walkers Sensations lime and coriander poppadoms dipped in M&S beetroot and wasabi houmous (sadly, I haven't been able to find it for ages - think it's been discontinued). Life-changing.

cordeliachaseatemyhandbag · 01/02/2024 12:06

Oh these are making me feel sick!

IBegYourBiggestPardon · 01/02/2024 12:10

Cheese, Branson pickle and peanut butter sandwiches

And the other one I used to love but can no longer eat now I'm gluten intolerant was toasted white bread, buttered then topped with cheesy watsits, tinned spaghetti and then grated cheese. Popped back under the grill to melt the cheese. Amazing!!

longtompot · 01/02/2024 12:59

Mine aren't as mad as some of these combinations, but...

Cold buttered toast topped with Laughing Cow cheese triangle, some tuna and sweet corn mayo and then a good amount of Thai sweet chilli sauce

Peanut butter on cold buttered toast topped with marmalade

Ham on cold buttered toast topped with sliced banana and a sprinkle of sea salt flakes

Stilton crumbled into tomato soup

My sister got me into a dollop of Philly with Thai sweet chilli sauce on top for dipping stuff into

Honey drizzled over goats cheese

Titsywoo · 01/02/2024 13:15

Sainsburys own brand chicken noodles with cheese stirred in and melted (sometimes we add a spoon of pesto too). So good and no idea why! We cook with about 200ml of water so it all absorbs therefore none is drained away and we keep all the salty goodness of the flavour packet Grin

idrinkandiknowthings · 01/02/2024 13:20

Mature cheddar, grated, mixed with ricotta and red pepper pesto, then grilled on toast. Absolutely fucking lush 😛

greglet · 01/02/2024 13:31

@MoonWoman69 let me know what you think!
