Why assume everyone on NMW is getting UC?

Why do people assume that someone on national minimum wage is receiving universal credit? A couple both on national minimum wage can easily be receiving no universal credit, even if one is working part-time. Benefits are really low.

@Islam52 When you are replying to specific posts by another user, you may find it useful to press the 3 dots in the top right hand corner and then press the quote button.

I ahve worked in benefits advice for a cancer charity and now for a charity for older people. A large proportion of the population of the city I work is in Muslim and I can honestly say of course muslims claim benefits, probably more claim help with rent because am I correct in thinking they can't take loans except if from a muslim organization that loans them because it's against their religion to take loans and pay interest ?

I work and on UC. Just working alone isn't enough to survive

Kalevala · 30/01/2024 15:42

I think when people read NMW they think one adult on NMW, so a household income of NMW. I get UC on £23k. If two parents are working I wouldn't assume UC.

The vast majority of people on UC work.

40% of UC recipients work -not a 'vast majority' and many of those are only working part-time.

There are two of us, myself and my child studying 4 A levels so he doesn't work, though he did full time over summer.

Not if they have rent plus a car to run. It is very little to live on if they live alone or in eg a house share.
