Why assume everyone on NMW is getting UC?

Why do people assume that someone on national minimum wage is receiving universal credit? A couple both on national minimum wage can easily be receiving no universal credit, even if one is working part-time. Benefits are really low.

You stated your age… I didn’t ‘find’ it.

You need to quote the post or tag the person if you want people to no who you are talking to.

Probably because there's so many people especially on MN who say they earn 60k but still get UC top up. So people probably make the assumption on NMW that those people would definitely qualify for it.
Theres so many parts to UC if you qualify or not, everyone's circumstances are different.

In my city you would not be entitled to any rent at all on £45k. It is an average area of the country.
Most people on national minimum wage are entitled to help with childcare. Because otherwise they could not afford to work.
@3WildOnes I assume you have done calculation based on under fives not at school.

I used a post code in surrey. I put the rent as £800. Ages of children 2 & 5. I put childcare costs as nursery and after school care at 1400pm.

If you give me a post code local to you I can use that. And tell me average rent prices.

We claimed UC (well, it was housing benefit for years before the switch over), we both worked full time but lived in London. Rent on a tiny, damp two bed terrace was 2k a month.

We ended up leaving London when the LL raised it to £2,200. We couldn’t find anywhere else to live because no bugger will rent to you if you even claim partial benefits, the amount of Estate agents I’ve been laughed out of in my time, despite working was horrendous. so we had no choice but to move across the country to somewhere much cheaper that we could afford on dh wage with no top ups (luckily his job had gone completely remote or we would have been screwed).

Dh wasn’t on NMW, but I was.

2 x full time NMW is not a low income household by any stretch of the imagination so no I wouldn't expect that household to be claiming UC unless a combination of high rate, high childcare costs and disabled children.

If you think you are doing a public service, stopping young people being homeless by charging your friend or family member 3500 a month rent you are dreaming.

How do you think anyone affords a deposit? Do you think you are the only home owner in the UK?

OrangeMarmaladeOnToast · 30/01/2024 14:32

Talk66talk · 30/01/2024 13:33

I think the problem is, the that UC can mean anything. You could be getting UC and not work at all. You could be getting UC and but not entitled to the rent element due to having a mortgage, you may just get the childcare element. So many variants that's what I don't like compared to the old system it was much better and clearer.

This, people don't get how complex it is. There are often posters who think because they put their household details into a benefits calculator and came out with nothing, that means nobody else with the same or higher income could ever get anything. But that's just not the way it works.

I think the benefit cap possibly confuses people too.

You could always try getting an actual job rather than living off other people’s money?

Did you forget to take tax off. NMW is around £1,400 after tax combined you would take hone £2,800. If you have 1 set of nursery fees, wrap around childcare like breakfast club and holiday club. High rent of £1000 it isn't a lot of money for a family of 4 is it?

asrarpolar · 30/01/2024 14:35

@Islam52 you are the one whining saying anyone can do it

@Talk66talk which is why childcare costs are available to most people with children on NMW.
Rents make lots of people on NMW and/or benefits very poor.
