Why assume everyone on NMW is getting UC?

Why do people assume that someone on national minimum wage is receiving universal credit? A couple both on national minimum wage can easily be receiving no universal credit, even if one is working part-time. Benefits are really low.

I'd be surprised if they didn't (with kids and renting) but id be surprised if they did without kids or with mortgage.

We pull in maybe 3.2 grand a month and with rent/help towards childcare we get another grand in UC. It's generous in the right circumstances.

I think the problem is, the that UC can mean anything. You could be getting UC and not work at all. You could be getting UC and but not entitled to the rent element due to having a mortgage, you may just get the childcare element. So many variants that's what I don't like compared to the old system it was much better and clearer.

If you are a landlord then you are part of the problem. Homes should be for living in, not for investment.

(And yes, I do work, don’t get UC and could afford to buy rental properties if I wanted them - so this isn’t sour grapes)

Because of the cost of living! I don't get UC no
I take home anything around £1600pm
Now pay a mortgage, run a car, every bill, food, the lot out of that by yourself
£1600 sounds a lot but it really isn't now

Talk66talk · 30/01/2024 13:37

@Islam52 people DO work on UC. Before commenting on a thread brush up on your knowledge first!

@Islam52 various reasons. Just like those who leave their country to move to some else's country...... the irony. People are entitled right? You sound very sheltered.

Because of the cost of living, rent and childcare
2 people earning min wage probably can't afford £900 rent and FT childcare

@Islam52 I'm a single parent household to 1 child........ I won't elaborate more because I suspect you are fully aware of how the system works given you are a LL yourself. It's quite unkind though to be that judgy!

If you believe in helping others…
Then you should have no issue with paying tax.

And with 4 rental properties you will move than likely be benefiting from UC yourself, as some
of your tenants are likely to use it to pay their rent.

It is not ‘too many in this country’, there’s nothing wrong with people choosing their relationships in this country. Your judgement is very clear and unkind, i think it’s pretty clear you are just here to wind everyone up though.

The mistake is to start working in the first place. I was unemployed last year for the first time in over 25 years. I was entitled to £77pw job-seekers allowance (which was taxed) for 6 months. There was a whiteboard in the lobby of the job which detailed the UC entitlements. I couldn't believe the amounts.

Muslims are also eligible for UC, their wages and outgoings are the same in this country as people from any background. Don’t kid yourself

@Islam52 quite frankly it's none of your business though. Why does it affect you? People who work and claim UC pay tax too. You sound a delight moaning about people on UC and now moaning about people getting divorced. Ohhh and personally I was never married in the first place just like lots of others, my ex also was and is an abusive person. You seem to be doing a lot of assuming rather than listening and learning. Why have you joined the thread?
