Old fashioned things which are great

The spam thread reminded me that I have had a craving for a salad with hard boiled egg and ham, possibly potato salad or warm new potatoes with butter and salad cream. It isn't chopped up or involving chickpeas and reminds me of cricket teas in the 70s, but it is what I fancy so I might make it for all of us tomorrow.
What else is dated but really 'hits the spot'? I'll throw in a 'Cornishish' pasty made with corned beef instead of real meat.
Anyone?

I love cheesy potato pie!

And a ploughman's lunch was always my go-to if we ate out at lunchtime. It can be hard to even find somewhere that does baked potatoes now.

I used to love the Heinz sandwich spread - normally had it on a sandwich with cheese - but not had for years .

Someone earlier mentioned old fashioned deserts - I had rum baba at a pizzeria a few weeks ago- not seen that since the 1980s.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 31/01/2024 14:57

I still use proper hankies and have always used bar soap .

Lardy cake! You cannot get the stuff in this county. I miss my Northamptonshire brioche from Oliver Adams. I keep meaning to learn to make one but it's just as faffy as brioche

Coffee ice cream! Dh has just found a new line in Tesco. Haven’t had it in decades.

hot banana crunch and hot lemon crunch 🙂🙂🙂 would love them back

Were they made by pouring hot water on and had some crumble stuff to sprinkle on?

Yes they indeed were - they were delicious 😋

The milkman.... Fresh milk delivered daily to your door in reusable glass bottles with recyclable foil tops by an electric vehicle.
A green environmental solution from the past!

@ehb102 Lardy cake....There was a bakery in Devizes, Wiltshire that made excellent one's. Not sure if it's still there but was always visited on our way to my Aunt's.
Oh the sticky gooey deliciousness, yum!

Agree that small, thin egg and cress sandwiches are under-rated. And also agree with poster above about very delicate real buttercream butterfly cakes. The sponge had to be very light and delicate, too, and perhaps faintly flavoured with lemon zest. Liked them a lot as a child, but no longer have a sweet tooth today.

As a child, for Sunday tea in winter we often used to have oatcakes, Jacobs cream crackers, flaky Cornish Wafers (anyone remember them?) or occasionally small, plain home-made scones plus little triangles of processed cheese (the brand was 'Swiss Knight' and it was meant to be posh) or Primula processed cheese (very pale and sticky, in a sort of semi-circular box). Always plus celery - the delicious old-fashioned white variety, not the modern green one (quite different). Plus tea, and I suppose there must have been cake, but I can't remember it.

My husband was asking only the other day 'What happened to Porter Biscuits?' - they're a Scottish delicacy: flat, soft rolls of enriched bread dough, with a dimple in the middle. Are they still made, I wonder?

MrsSunshine2b · 31/01/2024 15:44

I love proper dumplings in a casserole.

LanaL · 31/01/2024 16:27

Sardine and tomato paste sandwiches !! Omg my absolute favourite ( has to be on thin bread! ) I could eat so many of them in one sitting! My husband thinks it’s disgusting and says I’m eating cat food 🤣

Oh yes! and getting there first to spoon off the cream 😋

My Nan used to make mashed potatoes with salmon (tinned) with parsley sauce over the top with peas. It was simple and delicious and I’ve not had this since I was a child. I used to love mixing it all together

RM2013 · 31/01/2024 16:50

Oh and lardy cake as someone mentioned already. My dad used to sometimes buy them on a Saturday after he finished work from a local bakery. They were sticky sweet and huge

foxlover47 · 31/01/2024 17:06

I remember my mum
Mashing up tinned salmon or tuna with malt vinegar , adding cucumber and then having it in cheap white bread with a bit of salt and pepper , then
Goblin suet puddings were my fave dinner with mash and peas and gravy.
I loved angel delight butterscotch and rock cakes with lots of sugar on the top, she tried to make coconut ice many times but it never turned out right

You’re right! They were so nice.

I used to see them in Tesco, back in the 90's. Often wondered if they were better than the Fray Bentos ones which always looked a bit rubbery. Never tried either due to an intense dislike of internal organs as food, but have bought them for other people.

SnappyDragony · 31/01/2024 17:17

Manners.

RestingCatsArseFace · 31/01/2024 17:19

That pork pie loaf thingy with hard boiled egg in the middle

Gala or celebration pie, our local butcher still sells it.

Gia79 · 31/01/2024 17:31

Surely we’ve had a Fray Bentos pie with the crispy** lid from the oven?

SomethingBlues · 31/01/2024 18:01

Bread pudding. Not bread and butter pudding, but bread pudding made with stale breadcrumbs and spices. Bloody love it

user1471538283 · 31/01/2024 18:06

On Mondays we always had the left over roast with home made chips and branston pickle! My favourite meal of the week. I only eat chicken now but I wish my DF were here to make me cold chicken and his chips!

Also jacket potatoes in the oven smothered in butter. And thick white bread and butter.

Georgyporky · 31/01/2024 18:07

Not long ago, I had a dinner party and made
prawn cocktail,
boeuf burguigonne,
black forest gateau.

I drew the line at serving Blue Nun with it !
It went down very well.

Georgyporky · 31/01/2024 18:09

Remember dehydrated Vesta Beef Curry ?
I used to love it, & was very surprised to find it was still made. It's vile.

I used to like the crispy noodles with the Chow mein I think it was.

I'd like to be able to get just the noodles!

LILLYPRINT · 31/01/2024 18:39

My favourite.🤗
