Old fashioned things which are great

The spam thread reminded me that I have had a craving for a salad with hard boiled egg and ham, possibly potato salad or warm new potatoes with butter and salad cream. It isn't chopped up or involving chickpeas and reminds me of cricket teas in the 70s, but it is what I fancy so I might make it for all of us tomorrow.
What else is dated but really 'hits the spot'? I'll throw in a 'Cornishish' pasty made with corned beef instead of real meat.
Anyone?

I love a beef paste sandwich with plain crisps.
Used to love to have cold meat, the ham in a pear shaped tin and proper chips.
My mum used to make ham shank and mushy peas,
corned beef hash
Meat & potato pie

Does anyone remember
Russian slice?
I think it's also called tipsy cake

Jellykat · 31/01/2024 18:52

I've never stopped loving a Prawn cocktail, and still occasionally hanker after a Findus crispy pancake (never see them though)

Shadowsindarkplaces · 31/01/2024 18:59

Really wish Toast Toppers still existed...

Irismarle · 31/01/2024 19:30

Re Vesta curry, Vesta beef risotto tasted good though I remember I used to pick out the bits of dehydrated meat that I didn’t like and almost have it vegetarian.
Does anyone remember Eldorado ice cream? Its logo was a polar bear. It had a lovely flavour but the company was taken over by Lyon’s Maid and they stopped doing the original recipe. I sometimes wonder if the formula is in a filing cabinet somewhere! Lyon’s used to do ice creams in white/pink/green stripes where the green was pistachio. I loved it but it didn’t last long - they swapped the green part for chocolate which was dull,

School cake - plain sponge with glacé icing and sprinkles. Perfect.

kennycat · 31/01/2024 19:31

My Mum used to make cucumber and onion slices soaked in malt vinegar, I loved it.

My grandma always had this on the go as a condiment, went with everything! She'd put mint in it too... Lovely memories! Need to make some now!

Jamie Oliver and Waitrose have pickled cucumber recipes.

Pease Pudding - I still have it very occasionally and it reminds me of my nan as she loved it.
Bubble and squeak
Lemon syllabub
Also lemon sorbet frozen in an actual lemon!

Reading this thread has made me hungry and also inspired me to add some items to next week’s shopping list!

Skinnydoublecrochet · 31/01/2024 19:54

I still like tinned mixed fruit and evaporated milk. Use to love ice cream in a block and tinned pears or mandarin oranges.
We use to fight over the cherries 🍒 in fruit cocktail

Mine are:

Lemon and Lime Angel Delight.

Ham, thick sliced, egg and home-made chips.

Bismarck (my gran used to get this from the bakers on "the lane"! Imagine an iced finger, but as a bloomer fruited, still iced, but with almond paste running through, buttered with a cuppa it was lovely!)

Gammon, baked potato and broad beans with parsely sauce.

Sports biscuits

Liver and onions, buttery mash and cabbage.

Brawn, tried some recently from Morrisons deli counter, was vile! The one mum bought from our local butchers was soft and spreadable, not hard and sliced!

Proper mucky fat with the meat jelly mixed through it, on thick sliced of "cut it yourself bread" and a touch of salt.

Mussels, freshly cooked, with thick crusty bread and butter and pepper.

Lovely food and lovely memories too! We have always got jars of Heinz sandwich spread in, which actually goes lovely with Spam in white sliced bread for sandwiches.

While we're here, does anyone remember having coloured biscuits, they were round and had bobbles on the top and were mildly fruit flavoured but slightly salty? They were dingy red, dark mustard yellow and green I think... I can taste them now and nobody remembers them! This was the 70's...

Darklane · 31/01/2024 20:13

Proper Parkin with a sticky top
I have a really ancient, well thumbed cook book, the Farmhouse Kitchen. Used to be a tv programme, before all these celebrity chefs, must have been the seventies, two middle aged ladies cooking proper substantial family meals. I still use it more than all my newer cookery books.
Treacle toffee, the broken up misshaped pieces, not wrapped, that you bough in paper bags by the quarter pound.
Currant slice made from left over pastry & lots of currants.
proper chips cooked in lard in a chip pan

Does anyone remember bacon and egg pie? It was lovely but I can't find a recipe. It was bacon put in nests on a pastry base and the eggs were cracked whole in between each nest (about 6 eggs) with a pastry lid. I wish I had the recipe, it was lovely cold for picnics.

We have a recipe for this in the Winnie the Pooh cookbook! Ours is: make a standard shortcrust, roll out. Divide in half, use half to line a pie plate. Arrange 4-6 rashers bacon inside, leaving 4 spaces for eggs. Break an egg into each space, season with pepper if you like it. Roll remaining pastry into a circle, cut slits in the centre, cover pie and press edges to seal. Brush with a little milk, bake for 15 mins at 400F and another 15 mins at 350F. We love it!

CillianMurphyfanclub · 31/01/2024 20:14

My Nanna used to make a “chopped” salad on a Saturday tea time. It was basically just an ordinary salad, though it always had hard boiled eggs in it, tossed in mint sauce (the type you would have with lamb).
Absolutely loved it!

I have a vague memory of an orange flavoured cake that was in a square loaf with a layer of chocolate over it. Does anyone remember this and what it was called? It was my dad's favourite when I was a kid and he would always give me the end slice that had extra chocolate on.

Not been able to find orange but is Lewis & Green Lemon Layer Cake - Morrisons Online Groceries & Offers what you remember? Also available in raspberry Lewis & Green Ripple Layer Cake - Morrisons Online Groceries & Offers I remember buying these when my children were small (mid 30s now)
