Old fashioned things which are great

The spam thread reminded me that I have had a craving for a salad with hard boiled egg and ham, possibly potato salad or warm new potatoes with butter and salad cream. It isn't chopped up or involving chickpeas and reminds me of cricket teas in the 70s, but it is what I fancy so I might make it for all of us tomorrow.
What else is dated but really 'hits the spot'? I'll throw in a 'Cornishish' pasty made with corned beef instead of real meat.
Anyone?

Is that a film or a series, Human Remains? It rings a bell 🤔

I'd rather have the equivalent in cash Cathy... Here she is, Catherine wheels... 🤣🤣🤣

Human Remains was her first series, with Rob Brydon, where they played different characters each week. Some of the most grotesque characters ever created 😁

Best settle up now, Cath, or it just gets nasty.

Late seventies/early eighties my mum made a lovely pudding, but now can’t remember how she did it. Does anyone recognise this and can tell me how to make it? I think she used to put a cake like spongy mix in the bottom of a dish, saucy fruit on the top then bake it so the sponge rose up through the fruit. It was very light, soft and a little bit crisp too. It wasn’t upside down cake or Eve’s pudding, but a bit similar. I’d love to have it again 🙂

BouleDeSuif · 02/02/2024 21:47

@gluenotsoup was it cobbler? I make this recipe and it goes crispy on top with fruit under.

4oz butter
3/4 cup milk
1 cup granulated sugar
1 cup plain flour
1 tsp baking powder
Fruit (I use a tin of fruit cocktail drained or a tin of peaches drained)

Put the butter in a 9x9 inch pan and melt it in the oven (don't forget it's there)
Mix the flour and baking powder with the sugar and milk
Pour this over the butter in the pan ) DON'T STIR IT!!
Pour the fruit over
Sprinkle a bit of brown sugar over

Bake 45 mins at 180c. Delicious. I'm sorry it's in cups but that's how I was given it and I've never bothered translating it, as it were; just got a set of measuring cups from Tesco.

@gluenotsoup

Nice to see you outside Tiara Corner! Wink

I am not sure if this is what you mean, but could it be a self-saucing lemon pudding? I make it often and it's delicious. I tend to cook it for a few minutes less than suggested so the sauce part at the bottom isn't too thick. What fruit did your mum use in her pudding?

Here's a recipe for lemon self-saucing pudding that works well:

gluenotsoup · 02/02/2024 22:08

Thanks @BouleDeSuif and @MotherofPearl (nice to see you out and about too😂).
I think it might have been similar to the self saucing one, but I’ll definitely give both recipes a go. I think she varied the fruit, possibly plums or something a similar colour, and it was served warm with cream. It was definitely more a pudding than a cake or pastry, and I remember it being easy to make.

@RestingCatsArseFace crunchy toast. Take it out of the toaster and drop it face down on the counter top to 'knock the steam out'. Butter and proceed as usual. A caterer showed me this years ago and I haven't had a piece of soggy toast since.

cheapskatemum · 03/02/2024 21:56

My Nanna used to make me a fried cheese sandwich when I was a girl:
2 slices white sliced bread, each buttered on one side.
2 slices "plastic" cheese/burger cheese
Put the cheese slices on the unbuttered side of the bread, make a sandwich and fry the buttered sides gently in a frying pan until lightly browned & the cheese is slightly melted.
My friend's Mum made something similar called cheese dreams: instead of buttering the bread, she dipped the sandwich in beaten egg and fried it in butter.
I loved both. Sadly I can't eat them now as I have wheat & dairy allergies.

I lived near a Kosher patisserie with wonderful cakes. Best of all they made thumb sized Danish pastries which they sold by weight. Half a pound of assorted fruit, poppy seed, cheese (the cheese were both sweet and savoury at the same time, unbelievably delicious) and a cup of coffee was utter heaven. Had to share or I would have been the size of a house. Never seen anything for sale that compares.

Proper beigels. Note the spelling - not bagels which are an abomination. And pronounced i not a. For proper beigels you need an authentic Jewish baker, not a supermarket. These can be found in the East End of London and other areas that have or have had a significant Jewish population. They are a thing of loveliness and not a chewy tasteless mouthful like their imposters.

Not sure. The one in Brick Lane certainly is. When I was a nurse at the London Hospital the Vallence Road bakery was our regular stop-off after a boozy night out. Happy days.
