Old fashioned things which are great

The spam thread reminded me that I have had a craving for a salad with hard boiled egg and ham, possibly potato salad or warm new potatoes with butter and salad cream. It isn't chopped up or involving chickpeas and reminds me of cricket teas in the 70s, but it is what I fancy so I might make it for all of us tomorrow.
What else is dated but really 'hits the spot'? I'll throw in a 'Cornishish' pasty made with corned beef instead of real meat.
Anyone?

I always remember my Mum and Nanna having those type of salads. It was either ham, or tinned salmon with plenty vinegar, boiled eggs, warm potatoes and salad cream

I lived on Beef Paste sandwiches for about a decade. Had them every day for packed lunch at school. Packet of pickled onion monster munch and a penguin (a Boost or Star Bar as a treat on Fridays)

mathanxiety · 30/01/2024 04:18

I remember having a killer Manchester tart at a friend's house about forty years ago, and I love a good old-fashioned fruit flan too.

A sloppy fried egg sandwich between two heavily buttered slices of cheap white bread. Tomato sauce optional!

An egg banjo! Food of the hangover gods.

I have a vague memory of an orange flavoured cake that was in a square loaf with a layer of chocolate over it. Does anyone remember this and what it was called? It was my dad's favourite when I was a kid and he would always give me the end slice that had extra chocolate on.

ElevenSeven · 30/01/2024 05:39

Jamaica ginger cake
malted milk biscuits

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 30/01/2024 05:40

@DoAWheelie chocolate orange marmalade cake I think. Our local tea room used to sell it and I always asked to have a takeaway piece for later. Fabulous!

echt · 30/01/2024 06:52

And things in jars makes me also think of Heinz Sandwich spread, or “vomit in a jar” as it was known in our house

They sell this in the international section of Coles in Melbourne. In a fit of nostalgia I bought a jar some months ago. Bloody awful.

Even more vomit-like, though I loved it, was Heinz tinned vegetable salad, which I understand you can no longer get in the UK.

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 30/01/2024 07:03

@ODFOx back in the old days when I was a child that was the only ‘salad’ we knew. Only ever served on a Sunday in our house.

I’m going to buy one of the small floppy lettuces this week for old times sake, and spin it around in a tea towel!
Thanks for the memory.

Bovril on toast.

megletthesecond · 30/01/2024 07:29

Hankies for coat pockets. Changed every day of course. More effective than a tissue. (I would not use if I was ill obvs, those tissues are binned).

Traumdeuter · 30/01/2024 07:36

Yes to corned beef pasties, ham egg and chips, home baking and handkerchiefs

Peanutbutterismyjam · 30/01/2024 07:38

From yesterday:
Mixed nut granola, berries, coconut yoghurt and almond milk
Banana
I made Becky Excell chocolate cupcakes and licked the bowl from the batter and buttercream so too full for lunch!
Chocolate cupcake
Ham, roast potatoes, carrots and peas

BlindurErBóklausMaður · 30/01/2024 07:41

Malt loaf
McVities Chocolate Digestives (which used to be called Chocolate Homewheat)
Egg and chips done in a chip pan.

ThreeRingCircus · 30/01/2024 07:42

Fried egg and chips.

Sherry in a tiny glass at Christmas.

BouleDeSuif · 30/01/2024 07:44

I do all these things quite regularlyGrin (except I never liked sandwich spread)

I love blancmange, tapioca, trifle, etc. I do my chips in a pan of oil. My best friend jokes that it's always 1975 in my house.

My dh always carries aclean cotton handkerchief. It comes in surprisingly useful!

Last year, after watching Schtisel (?), ds and I often had a plain bolied egg and pickled vegetables for lunch. It was simple but nice! I normally have toast with my marmite but when we have a good white loaf, I love a thick untoasted slice with butter and lots of marmite.

Last one - sardines on toast. You used to be able to order this in John Lewis' café but I guess it's too simple for them now.

CountryShepherd · 30/01/2024 07:47

We have a fried breakfast every Sunday, with black pudding. I shouldn't love it, but I do.

soupfiend · 30/01/2024 07:47

A nice cup of tea.

You can make it at home very nicely.

Can you actually get this in an establishment these days without worrying that the water isnt hot enough, its some wanky named fancy tea rather than just plain old tea and horror of horrors usually made with UHT milk?

ChocolateCinderToffee · 30/01/2024 07:49

Kunzel Showboats.

Daffodilsandtuplips · 30/01/2024 07:49

I make those salads: Ham or chicken, or salmon if flush, tuna if not. Lettuce (old fashioned floppy type), boiled eggs, tomato, warm potato salad. I make my own, I put beetroot and cucumber out as side dishes
I’ve just bought a Be-Ro cookery book off their website, proper nostalgia.. I’ve had it two weeks and I’ve made scones, rock cakes, Melting moments, ham and egg pie and a Victoria sponge cake.
Can’t beat it.

Mairzydotes · 30/01/2024 07:51

Dipping bread into the juices when roasting beef.

PaulCostinRIP · 30/01/2024 07:52

Geese and marmite sandwich.

I've been eating them for at least 55 years.

AlreadyDropped · 30/01/2024 07:52

Battenburg cake
Proper bread pudding made with old bread, not brioche/hot cross buns/panettone
Sometimes when I am taking my dog on a long walk I take two boiled eggs, one for me one for him. Lunch of the gods.

soupfiend · 30/01/2024 07:53

The floppy lettuce is a 'garden' lettuce isnt it?

Its far far superior to your icebergs and little gems, because it actually tastes of lettuce, rather than bitter water. It almost has a buttery greeny soft taste.

Nannyfannybanny · 30/01/2024 07:55

I don't think anything on here is "old fashioned food,"most of it is normal every day stuff. Surely people eat boiled egg salad, I certainly do, because I don't eat meat . I was born in 1950, DF fished,we kept chicken, next door neighbour went shooting,so it was often rabbit or pigeon. Lot of offal and tongue. That's what I would call old fashioned food now.
