Things I can't be bothered with and never have

Fake tan - never done it.
Fake eyelashes.
Thick foundation that you have to blend in at the neck and chest.
Any form of waxing especially fanny waxing.
Don't get me wrong, I like to look nice and get my hair done but honestly the state of some people now - they must spend hours/days on all that.

Oh yes, false nails, tried it once, they grew out at the bottom in 2 weeks and looked awful.

I admit I've tried all these
The false nails need upkeep and once they were off it took ages for my nails to recover
Fake tan ended up all over the bedsheets
Waxing hurts , but only thing that works on my top lip and lasts a while.
I do get my eyebrows tinted by a lovely lady who doesn't charge a fortune and they look fairly natural as I don't want them too dark
Only a few times a year for this once I can't bear them looking awful and never been able to master any of it myself!
I use a shaver for legs / under arms

FairyBreadQueen · 28/01/2024 13:24

I've nevr had a spray tan or false nails.

I've never bothered with;

  • going to see bands live
  • pub quiz nights
  • maintaining a stable healthy body weight.

The latter I'm doing something about now but the others still hold no interest for me

KittensSchmittens · 28/01/2024 13:32

I have never...

Dyed my hair
Got acrylic nails
Fake tanned
Got false eyelashes
Worn high heels
Had my eyebrows done
Waxed anything ever
Had Botox, filler or any other kind of injectable
Used any skincare more complicated than cleanser and moisturiser.

There's probably more, but that's off the top of my head.

Augustus40 · 28/01/2024 13:32

Fake eyelashes. Fake tan.

egowise · 28/01/2024 13:51

'the state of some people'

Nice.

Not sure why this is a controversial statement. Some Love Island wannabees look absolutely ridiculous.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 28/01/2024 13:57

I've never done anything in your post, apart from 6 weekly hair cuts and colour
I use concealer blusher and lipstick daily
Skin care is no more than micellar water and Cerave moisturiser
Being touched and " pampered" makes my skin crawl! but I accept I'm not the norm
Eyebrows I have Tweezermans
I wouldn't judge anyone who enjoys those things and can afford it though

Have done all the above bar botox. All in. my twenties and early thirties and long in the past. . The only thing i do now from your list is have my hair highlighted three or four times a year. Same with my eyebrows waxing and tinting as they are non existent. I do like the odd face mask, serum and nice creams if that counts as "complicated"?

DrinksbytheSea · 28/01/2024 14:06

Nails - I think decorated nails look a bit weird, especially toe nails. I keep my fingernails really short because they drive me round the bend when they get slightly long. It all seems such a pointless faff.

Fake eyelashes - I ended up with them at a wedding recently and I looked absolutely ridiculous. Along with the heavy make up.

I agree on the fake tan. I tried it once and it looked good, but I felt so sticky, worrying about it rubbing onto clothes and bedsheets, and the smell. Gross. I didn’t feel clean.

Crunchymum · 28/01/2024 14:08

It's easier to list the things I have had done (regular hygienist and haircuts - only ever had it coloured once - that's about it)

I've never:
Had a massage
Had anything waxed (professionally or by myself)
Had anything fake (no fake tan / eyelashes / nails)
Had any beauty treatments (including eyebrows / anything surgical)
I've never been to a beauty salon or tanning place or a spa

Despite this I've always been semi okay turned out. IE good skincare routine, well kept hair, wear classic clothes that suit me, have clean - albeit not super white - teeth, wear make up when i'm dressed up. I've always been happy enough this way.

I've also never owned a dishwasher 😂

WaitingfortheTardis · 28/01/2024 14:09

Ironing.

Psychoticbreak · 28/01/2024 14:12

Oh look another woman bashing thread by another woman just because YOU do none of those things does not mean all women should not. This is at least the third post today I have read in a similar vein.

the80sweregreat · 28/01/2024 14:14

I see gorgeous 20 somethings walking around with all kinds of different things done to them , the fake lashes, the hair extensions or fake tan etc and I just think why tbh ! Tattoos I hate , but members of my family have them and like them .. each to their own
I have some things done now and again because I'm getting on a bit , but these people really don't need it all and look beautiful anyway
However, it's their money and their body and keeps other people in employment and the economy going, so, from that point of view , I guess it's a good thing. Plus social media is probably a lot more persuasive than I had in my youth where it was only certain magazines or tv that might have pushed certain procedures to be done.

Oneofthesurvivors · 28/01/2024 14:21

I've never started a faux naive thread on mumsnet bashing other women.

BreakfastGold · 28/01/2024 14:22

Moving away from the beauty theme,
I never bothered with tracking my cycle or opks when I was ttc. Don't track my cycle at all.
Don't wash fruit or veg.

DaisyDaisyDaisyDaisyDaisyDaisy · 28/01/2024 14:24

Things I can't be bothered with and never have:
Women saying 'the state of it' about other women. These threads are popping up over and over again. What is the point of them?

Doggydoggy · 28/01/2024 14:27

I’ve never had my eyebrows done, I occasionally pluck the odd eyebrow hair but apart from that they have never been touched. They are naturally pretty good.

i dyed my hair for the first time last November (well the hairdresser did) just some teal at the front.

I’ve worn makeup once at 12 just eye shadow and mascara, never worn it since.

i don’t see the point of filler or Botox or prophilo or Morpheus. It baffles me that people do this, but it’s up to them if they want to do it. I wouldn’t do it but if someone else wants to that’s up to them.

i bought fake nails once when I was 11, me and a friend bought a packet of them from Tesco, the cheap plastic ones that glue on, this would be 2006 ish. Never had any desire to do it after that. No idea what I would do with long nails, they just look so inconvenient. I don’t even do gel polish, only the occasional normal polish.

i did wax my legs for about a year but then gave up. I do however get laser hair removal. Started with my lip and chin and that sort of area, I am quite hairy, not overly so but thought why not. Then I got it done on my lower legs. I need to book another appointment. Once I’ve finished my lip I’m gonna do my underarms. That’s my luxury in life, to be body hair less 😂 I would never do my downstairs, the thought fills me with dread. I hate using tampons, let alone anyone waxing down there. No one is getting near my downstairs unless absolutely necessary.

just to add this is just my opinion and feelings for myself. While it may baffle me what other women do, and I don’t see the need for any cosmetic work. I would not say you should not do it or you look awful because you do this.

i also don’t particularly see the need for hair removal, but I do quite like the hairless feeling 😂 but i enjoy it so don’t begrudge other women for doing something they enjoy.

TescoSelfServcorp · 28/01/2024 14:30

The impact of reality TV like TOWIE and Love Island is evident on the streets. JMO but it's interesting to note the connection between this trend and social class.

Fakery is nothing new and it can be quite appealing. Think of the understated beauty of Lisa Eldridge, Alicia Keys, or Nigella Lawson. Subtle mascara, light touch of bronzer, neatly painted nails etc often look nice.

My daughter follows a teenager on Tiktok who regularly posts videos titled "Get Ready With Me" or "GRWM." This girl starts off with striking blue eyes and fair skin, but by the end of the video, she transforms into a heavily made-up character resembling a hybrid porn star oompa loompa. Subtlety seems to be nonexistent, the makeup trends have tilted towards a drag style. Tans that are far from natural, and lips that seem disproportionate to the face - are common sights nowadays. Even during my visit to Prague, i expected to find more elegance, I saw the same thing.

Deathraystare · 28/01/2024 14:30

Not bothered with fake eyelashes as worried they will end up in my soup and can never fit them and I wear glasses anyway! Hate Acrylic nails , especially the shovel shaped ones! I try to keep my nails short as they feel weird if I grow them long. It feels like I have 'pegs' on the end of my fingers!

No to Botox, well at the moment anyway.
I do like to have eyebrows and lashes done when I can afford it.

All fake tans whiff on me, even the ones supposed to smell of raspberries or something. When my skin warms up I get the biscuity, fag filter paper smell.

Have been dyeing my hair since I was 11. Try to get it cut regularly (when funds allow)

No to waxing as I get pimples come up on my top lip.

Haven't worn foundation for a while but when I do I wear a light one or mix one with a moisture lotion if too heavy. I only wear blusher/bronzer when going out but always wear liner, mascara and lipstick/balm.

I don't have facials or massage. Only had one once. I have started to do more face masks at home, just because I like them!

I should I guess shave my legs more though it is not much noticeable. As we get to more warmer weather I will certainly shave my pits.

Quite agree.

UtterlyButterly2048 · 28/01/2024 14:39

@Gettingbysomehow you have basically said that other people like different things to you? Surely, you have not just realised that?

dutysuite · 28/01/2024 14:42

I used to wear fake tan in my 20s now I’m in for 40s I just can be arsed with the mess, I also find I look more youthful with pale skin.
I can’t wear false nails anymore as I wear contacts and I can’t remove them if I have long nails. I’ve never had Botox or fillers but have always looked after my skin so haven’t felt the need until recently, I’d like one corner of my mouth lifted a bit after I had a molar removed it’s definitely dropped slightly on that side.

LauderSyme · 28/01/2024 14:49

Things I can't be bothered with and never have:

Ignoring the almost irresistible strength of our patriarchal and misogynist society that teaches us from birth that the primary worth of a woman lies in her appearance and it's acceptability to the male gaze.

Ignoring the enormous strength of various multi billion pound industries (whose values are rooted in said society) that are devoted to persuading women their natural appearance is unacceptable.

Plus:

Bullying anyone for any reason.

Being racist. Being sexist. Being disablist. I know I have internalised biases and prejudices like everyone else but work on self-reflecting well enough not to act upon them (at least I fervently hope so).

Apologies for getting on my high horse. I will now dismount.
