Story after story now of conscription being needed. I was thoroughly convinced that this is just scaremongering but the number of senior figures coming out again today warning us to prepare it really feels like they are getting us used to the idea. Also in the papers today the US is moving some of its nuclear stockpile to the UK. Getting bit nervous now I have to admit.

Okay. So if we did leave NATO, what happens when Russian ships turn up to stalk British waters as a blatant act of provocation, which they've done before now, what do we do? We won't have any NATO allies to help us get them to back off, it'll be up to us to handle”

I imagine we would use our airforce and navy much as we are in the waters off of Yemen atm. I don’t see other NATO forces other than the US rushing to take part there, so I’m not sure why we would expect them, with the possible exception of France, to rush to our aid in those circumstances?

This is all pure speculation, anyway. Do you really think the Russian forces are in any fit state to engage in a major war elsewhere in Europe? Their machine and Human Resources are severely depleted. Much of the equipment was already outdated prior to the invasion of Ukraine. Morale amongst forces and the population is low. Tens, if not hundreds of thousands, no-one actually knows because The Kremlin won’t say, obviously, of young men fled to avoid conscription. All those who could have been, have been and are being sent home in body bags in their thousands. Where are the equipment/troops Putin would need to launch a land invasion on the UK going to come from? Resistance is really beginning to be heard more widely in Russia, now. Brave people are feeling more confident in putting their heads above the parapet now to publicly question and object, mostly mothers of dead soldiers as is often the case. Of course as some have said on this thread, he could engage his nuclear armaments. In all likelihood, they would be shot down before they left Russian skies.

Putin too is an old man, despite his calendars and Botox. I hope it won’t be too long before nature takes its course (or someone with sense in the Kremlin intervenes

Itsnotallaboutyoulikeyouthink · 27/01/2024 12:52

My 15 year old brought this up the other day. He said with of course a naivety “well it would be an experience and I would have to go wouldn't I?”

Not all of this generation are the fluffy clouds you are portraying on this thread. Makes me laugh it’s this generation most of you are bringing up, some responsibility needs to be taken there.

moomoomoo27 · 27/01/2024 12:52

sheetsoflux · 27/01/2024 12:09

@moomoomoo27 but you most likely won't be able to immigrate elsewhere surely, if it came to conscription? Otherwise loads of us would do it

There are loopholes. We hosted a Ukrainian refugee and her conscription-age son got out. Obviously you have to make some preparations. But with the Ukraine war it was common knowledge for a long time it was going to happen because Russia/China had an agreement to make it after the Bejing Olympics.

Did you mean to direct that at me?

if so, why??

@Walking2024now24days apologies I should have said j agree with you, I was backing up your point and agree

Also in the papers today the US is moving some of its nuclear stockpile to the UK.

The public won’t object as much to the above if they think conscription is an alternative

Exactly. That’s what the conscription story is priming us for.

moomoomoo27 · 27/01/2024 12:54

TempestTost · 27/01/2024 12:13

Where would you emigrate to? There is no country in the world that does not expect its people to step up in a war.

Probably a nice little Caribbean island. I think the US will be least/last affected, especially southerly, and nearby islands after that. Not every country will be at war, but of course if somewhere like Switzerland remains neutral again you'd still massively be in the firing line for a European war. I'll probably see where the Alan Sugars and people like that go, he jetted off to Aus under the guise of work (filming Aussie Apprentice) as soon as covid hit so he could live a normal life. I don't have any dependents or family, and my partner can work remotely or we can just live off our savings for a few years.

fonfusedm · 27/01/2024 12:56

New Zealand & Hawaii is where the rich have their doomsday bunkers

fonfusedm · 27/01/2024 12:59

The Swiss can likely defend themselves, lots of guns in the population

MrsSkylerWhite · 27/01/2024 12:59

MyrtlethePurpleTurtle

Switzerland has mandatory military description for men!”

And last engaged in combat when? 1850s? Lot of bloody use it was during WWII.

Blondebutnotlegally · 27/01/2024 12:59

Userxyd · 27/01/2024 07:31

I wish I had your optimism but I agree with OP. I think our flabby babyed selfish young people are making it more likely to happen, not less! How easy are we as a target?! Compared to eg Ukraine where civilians were instantly willing and able to fight to defend themselves and each other.
We would be forced to roll over and submit in no time (like Afghanistan sadly).
Plus we're also so addicted to TikTok etc that any would be invaders would just need to post a few videos and we'd be out protesting on their side against our own people.

Yes you are right, it's the millennial/gen zs making us more likely to go to war!!! DEFINITELY not the couple of generations above in govt and their swinging dick contests!

I mean, I've seen people mindlessly pick on younger generations before but blaming them for potential war is something else 😅

OriginalUsername2 · 27/01/2024 13:02

I keep wondering would it will be just men, men and women, trans people?

I can’t see how today’s men would cope. Women are already all in work this time. How would it work?!

Uricon2 · 27/01/2024 13:02

Another official "boomer" here. We can't complain about the undoubted ageism on some threads and not speak out against some of the awful comments about young people on this one.

I'd bet the house on the people making them never having been conscripted themselves and 99.99% likely not to have done a day of National Service (which ended in 1963)

The conscription thing itself is scaremongering, possibly understandable as the armed forces have been run down like everything else, but it isn't going to happen.

GuinnessBird · 27/01/2024 13:02

Some of the comments on this thread are disgusting and the people making the comments are wondering why young people don't want to fight?!

It'll never happen but also times have changed, millions will not want to fight a war because rich men want to wave their dicks around.

MrsSkylerWhite · 27/01/2024 13:08

Ha! 💯lockdown vibes!! Why should the young protect the old???”

Oh, now I see exactly where you’re coming from, @DoubleTwin . Self-interest, perhaps. ? How old are you? Did you undertake National Service? Will you be called upon to fight?

I’m 59 and if push came to shove I’d rather lose my life than have a young person fighting to “protect” me. Our youngsters gave up so much for the elderly and compromised during Covid, the vast majority willingly and without complaint. It harmed them enormously in so many ways that I think most self-centred older people still don’t appreciate. Now many of those elderly are expecting them to offer up their lives too? Beyond belief.

Please explain to me, exactly. Why should the young protect the old, a proportion of whom it seems from this thread have nothing but contempt for them even after their sacrifices during the pandemic?

TempestTost · 27/01/2024 13:09

MrsSkylerWhite · 27/01/2024 12:20

TempestTostYou would be happy then, for the UK to withdraw from NATO?”

If it lessened the chances of my loved ones having to fight and increased their chances of living out their natural lives? Absolutely, yes.
Switzerland manages pretty well, as a neutral nation.
If Trump gets back in and the US withdraws, NATO treaties won’t be worth the paper they’re written on and this will all be academic.
Why some people still believe the UK to be a major world player is beyond me. We said goodbye to our influence in 2016.

You do realize that if NATO fails there will be more need for British people to step up to fill military roles?

19ThanhAlice19 · 27/01/2024 13:11

ITS ALL HYSTERIA just ignore it!

Over a million people in Briton have dual citizenship and this number is ever increasing.

So can those with dual citizenship go to their homeland, then return to Britain when we need cheap labour again, after thousands-millions British men have died?

People keep talking about war on here like its something easy that all men should be up for. Come on lad! Put on your 2 dog tags, one so we can ID your remains and the other so we can stop your payments, be a tough lad come on! Ain't you a real man?

Huh? I thought that type of masculinity is "toxic".

Teen girls on tiktok are already parodying it and asking to be put back in the kitchen over the front line! I would say maybe it would increase our birth rate but you're not going to do that without any men around. Bring in cheap sperm labour?

No thanks! It's all fear mongering and the gov is more stupid that I thought of they think we need war. BREXIT, covid, war. Computer says no. F you.

itsmyp4rty · 27/01/2024 13:12

Putin isn't really interested in Europe, he knows we're absolutely no threat to him, he just likes to mess with us.

What he actually wants is the old USSR back, he's lamented its loss plenty of times.

The idea that there would be conscription in the UK is ludicrous, people would sooner go to jail than go fight in Europe - or they'd all opt for the community service option. The Russian ships would have to be landing on the beaches before it would happen.

Oh and I wouldn't get excited about Putin being old and dying shortly, I've read there is even worse set to take his place.

Wingham · 27/01/2024 13:13

MrsSkylerWhite · 27/01/2024 13:19

Naptrappedmummy

… removed from the situation. I’m just not so naive that I think morally objecting to the situation would make it all go away.

Not naive. There is no “situation”. Land invasion of the UK by Russia or any other nation is extremely unlikely. Talk of conscripting young people, with the demands already on them to just get by week to week, is posturing by an about to retire military man desperate to increase funding for the depleted defence forces.

It’s been picked up by the mostly conservative supporting news media as a welcome distraction from the dire situation the government is in. Irresponsible scaremongering about something that won’t happen.

Wingham · 27/01/2024 13:19

Thatusernamewastaken · 27/01/2024 11:31

Never going to happen.
Hope those that are saying it could be a positive/good thing are male and between 18-35 though, as those would be the ones to suffer.

And women obviously.
They will not be exempt.
They’ve been on the front line for some time now.

PinkflowersWhiteBerries · 27/01/2024 13:21

Get them flying military drones and the’y toast Russia by lunchtime, whilst eating an Egg McMuffin.

Maybe it's a tactic to boost birth rates!

IClaudine · 27/01/2024 13:21

That Swedish leaflet has some very pertinent advice. Worth bearing in mind when on threads created by posters who plop and run!

Be on the lookout for false
information

States and organisations are already using misleading information in order to try and influence our values and how we act. The aim may be to reduce our resilience and willingness to defend ourselves.

The best protection against false information and hostile
propaganda is to critically appraise the source:
• Is this factual information or opinion?
• What is the aim of this information?
• Who has put this out?
• Is the source trustworthy?
• Is this information available somewhere else?
Is this information new or old and why is it out there at this precise moment?
• Search for information – the best way to counteract propaganda and false information is to have done
your homework.
Do not believe in rumours – use more than one reliable source in order to see whether the information is
correct.
• Do not spread rumours – if the information does not appear trustworthy, do not pass it on.

It’s not about the young protecting the old in a war scenario though.
Its about those that are physically capable.
Most Older people are not physically capable along , obviously, with the disabled…..of all ages.

You do realize that if NATO fails there will be more need for British people to step up to fill military roles?

Why? We have not been subjected to land invasion since 1066.
Russia is in no fit state to invade. It is not going to happen.
