Holiday apartment with in laws; no internal doors!

I have no actual reason for this post apart from sharing my horror and hoping for some funny stories of surviving nightmare holidays from others.

Agreed to go on holiday with in laws and was admittedly very hands off and relaxed about the actual booking, leaving it to my partner who left it to his parents. (Obviously never ever going to do this again!) Cost wasn’t an issue for us but partner and family can be frugal. They are all very close.

Arrived a few days ago and the tiny apartment has no internal doors so there is no escaping each other or privacy. The bedrooms each open on to the living and kitchen area with just curtains, and you have to go through one bedroom to leave the apartment.

Im halfway through and really struggling. Tried to nap earlier but there was no effort to keep voices down. I’m so so tempted to book the gorgeous 4* hotel next door but I know it will upset people.

Never ever never doing this again and who on earth designs an apartment with no bloody internal doors!?

Apart from spending a fortune (that we can afford and who goes skiing thinking it will be cheap) on rearranged plans I’ll admit I’m having a lovely time and now completely of the opinion that if old grumpy man doesn’t like young independent woman sorting out issues (issues that include not hearing him fart away) with her own money that just isn’t my issue.
no doubt there will be challenges in years to come with the huge culture clash but I know my boundaries now and I will continue to be clear about them.
thank you to all of you for your stories, humour, different perspectives and sanity. Thank god for mumsnet.

Love this. Good for you.

7 years and not married? Maybe dp can't find a honeymoon suite to fit 4 adults...

Well it’s awful to laugh at someone’s really terrible situation but… 🤐

Codlingmoths · 24/01/2024 21:49

I hope you find a nice spa hotel! Booking for one?

Trickedbyadoughnut · 25/01/2024 09:48

Ah yes, you're being "difficult" woman.

How dare women have opinions in this day and age, eh?

LookItsMeAgain · 25/01/2024 17:37

I do hope that you're having a lovely day today @Sooty20235 and that you can manage to find some room somewhere for the final day. If I were you I'd be trawling the internet for an alternative room for the last night and then book an airport transfer for you (and your OH if they are so disposed) and make your own way back to the airport.

Show them just how independent you really can be!

That’s what we are doing 😁

Had a lovely last day although clouded by mixed feelings about the future of all this and how on earth we cope with the fact that I frankly never want to see the man again as I think he’s a misogynistic bully.

Partner is flitting between the two apartments and I just don’t really understand how he can be ok with the way we’ve been treated. The father also cheated on his mum and I’m really struggling with how he seems to justify the father’s treatment of women in his life. Not overly keen to rock the boat right now as I have felt sorry for him stuck in the middle. But I do feel like I’ve lost all perspective on what’s normal and a bit of give and take, and what’s actually unacceptable. Got a lot of thinking to do.

Seems he has been taught that a woman's feelings are second to a man's...

Mumoftwo1312 · 25/01/2024 18:07

And he says you've got psychological problems...!

Out of interest how do you know about FIL's infidelity? That seems a very private thing for other people to know

LameBorzoi · 26/01/2024 06:24

Yikes! The everybody-stuffed-into-a-small-space for skiing thing is something that I would expect, but FIL being so nasty is not. Honestly, how does you being in another apartment affect him?

Personally I wouldn't have sex while sharing a flat with relatives, though, no matter how good the doors were!

Newestname002 · 26/01/2024 06:43

I'm assuming because OP showed independent thought and turned thought into action. How dare she, a mere woman, go against what he as leader of the pack, decides will happen?

Good for you @Sooty20235 - I'm glad you sorted things out more to your satisfaction. I hope your partner takes good look at how his father has been in the past, present and how he'll deal with him in the future, as I can't see FIL changing for the better any time soon. 🌹

LameBorzoi · 26/01/2024 07:29

@Newestname002 Yes, it's sounding like that!

The farting thing sounds vile. I initially thought that OP was using it as a euphemism for being all a little too close together, but it's beginning to sound like the FIL just doesn't care.

I genuinely think it’s that. What a prick. He has no daughters and cheats on women, it says a lot.

I made it better and easier for everyone at my expense, how is that so awful. And new place is less than a 1 min walk away so it’s not like we ended up split up completely.

And yes he really was very open about his bodily functions which obviously I didn’t give as the reason for new place but yeah, yuck 😬

If someone is going to be miserable, make sure it's not you!

Well if the OH's father has no issues with only being separated from his son and long term girlfriend by a thin bit of cloth while he's on holiday, I don't think we need Inspector Morse to work out that there must have been something said before now about his infidelity.

LookItsMeAgain · 29/01/2024 09:02

@Sooty20235 - Hope you're home now and that your partner is a little bit more reasonable. I would give the 'in-laws' a wide berth now for some time.

Hope you were able to manage to enjoy the last few days of your holiday.

LadyBird1973 · 29/01/2024 09:24

I think that as horrible as this experience has been, it's also been valuable. Without it you might still be drifting along, not giving enough thought to where your relationship is going and sleep walking into this awful family set up.

Home and life is feeling very normal. But yes, that will be a very very wide berth for a very long time and he agrees that’s for the best 😂
I did still have a really lovely time actually, normally things like that would really get to me but maybe Mumsnet helped me keep my sanity 🥰🥰

Absolutely! It did lead to some really helpful and honest conversations.
And actually I still had a wonderful time, once in the lovely apartment followed by one night city break 😁😁😁

Did it cost you a fortune to get back to the airport as he refused to take you?

Has your partner spoken to them since?
