TV shows as a child that freaked you out

Just thought I would start a threat for fun, I was trying to describe this particular show to my partner and he had no idea what I was talking about but after much researching I found out it was Wizbit, which was played by Paul Daniels. The yellow hat and the rabbit honestly freaked me out. For context I'm 33 so this was early 90s it must have been on..anyone got any shows that still give them the ick as an adult?

I remember it. It's based on a children's book by Rumor Godden. All her stuff is dark!

Ohh Tottie. So awful.

I think maybe there were a lot of sadists who went into children's TV writing in the 70s and 80s.

The adventures of Grady greenspace. The intro used to freak me out. Sorry I can't find a better quality of video. No one ever seems to have watched it, it was out in the early 90s.

Another one, which in my head has a similar memory sensation as Noseybonk, is Frank Sidebottom. That creepy blank face.
I was driving through Manchester about 15 years ago and the absolute bastard walked across a zebra crossing in front of me - it was like my childhood nightmares come to life. I had to fight myself to not accelerate at him out of fright.

I had a memory of this and never knew what it was called! Just googled it and yes it’s this!Freaked me out so much.

Also Worzel Gummidge for me. I still can’t look at pictures of him. Ugh so creepy.

So true! ‘ Birdie did look lovely in the flame’ 😱

Beauty and the Beast. Still vaguely terrifies me - truth be told.

Jim'll Fix It.

He gave me the creeps, always. No idea why people fawned over him. No idea why the world was shocked when the obvious was exposed.

Me too. Even as a young child my brain and body had a visceral reaction to seeing his face on tv. My instincts were good even at age 7.

The Demon Headmaster 😳

The Demon Headmaster
Are You Afraid of the Dark?
Goosebumps

I recently watched some of the old episodes of Are You Afraid of the Dark? On YouTube and they still gave me the creeps!

Ooo and Zzzap! Which was a tv show in the 90s! It had creepy characters and very eerie music!

Most have been said but mine :

Crystal Maze - I also thought they'd be locked forever

Knightmare - the ending especially freaked me out as kid when they were just stood there sometimes like they were left there

Magic roundabout - not sure why but it freaked me out

Ditto the above to Willo O wisp. Think it was Kenneth Williams voice and the weird tv thing and the fairy.

He-Man - Skeletor scared me!

The dark crystal - those weird Skeksis characters!

Button moon - just found it creepy

Animal farm - scary as fuck and sad, same with Watership Down

That weird instrument thing that Rolf Harris used to play

Tales of the unexpected

Dr who - even the music was scary

And finally for a book, Funny Bones! I found it scary even though I loved them

AutumnColour89 · 23/01/2024 00:27

Another one for 999 Lifesavers
The Ward- a medical drama for kids
A very old cartoon called Little Lulu (I think) that my Gran got on VHS from a car boot sale... so sinister

I also once saw an episode of Grange Hill where a girl slips out of a window trying escape a fire, the graphic shot of her bleeding head haunted me for years. Even more so when the actress who played her later met a similar end in real life.

The original Bungle in Rainbow. Stuff of Nightmares.

The really blonde alien boy and the strange sounds he made. . and the strange guy on his tail. Forgot the name of it

Quiet as a Nun

Was just about to say Quiet as a Nun. OMG that faceless nun scared the bejeezus out of me. 😱 in hindsight I'm surprised I was allowed to watch it, I was only about 10.

The public information films put the fear of God up me as well. Worst one was 'Apaches' where a bunch of kids die horrible (and very graphically depicted) deaths playing on a farm. It was utterly harrowing, there's no way anyone would make something like that aimed at kids today. There was a similarly harrowing one about a school sports day set on a railway line.

It's a wonder people who were kids in the 70s didn't grow up permanently traumatised...

buttons55 · 23/01/2024 00:47

I was terrified of the Moomins, thought it was just me, remember my friends finding it hilarious that I was so scared of them. I used to have nightmares about them.
Also 'are you afraid of the dark?'

EeesandWhizz · 23/01/2024 01:07

Bloody hell, Apaches, this HS&E 30 minute film still haunts me from the 70's.

DH and I were both farm kids and it terrified him too. We watched it again a couple of years ago, still horrid, and the list of 20+ names of the children that died on farms the previous year is heartbreaking.

We watched it at school.

Apaches

Noggin the Nog , a creepy cartoon narrated by Eric Thompson in a very creepy voice

Smallonesaremorejuicy · 23/01/2024 01:29

I was fascinated by that series . Was it called Totty? Marchpain was the evil doll . Mr Plantagenet was the dad . Apple was burnt to death as I recall. Oooo I fancy watching it again. Like you said nobody ever seems to remember it !

Smallonesaremorejuicy · 23/01/2024 01:32

The first Dr. WHO (with William Hartnell). The Daleks scared me rigid. It was the tinny voice repeating 'I am a Dalek' and the speed at which the Dale's covered ground. The first time we saw them, my sister and I ended up hiding behind the sofa!

LutonBeds · 23/01/2024 04:33

@Ohyoudodoyou yes, they became far more sanistised/less scary. I remember as a 5/6 year old being taken round to the ‘big’ (junior) school to watch ‘Robbie’, produced by BR about the dangers of playing/crossing railway tracks. My DM worked at my primary after I’d left and I was talking about how it always stayed with me years later. She told me it was no longer shown in schools (would have been the 1990s or thereabouts) as it was now deemed ‘too scary’.

Mr Softee from the soft mint adverts, something about the way he moved really freaked me out.

Ugh. I'd forgotten about that. Everything about that advert gave me the creeps.
