TV shows as a child that freaked you out

Just thought I would start a threat for fun, I was trying to describe this particular show to my partner and he had no idea what I was talking about but after much researching I found out it was Wizbit, which was played by Paul Daniels. The yellow hat and the rabbit honestly freaked me out. For context I'm 33 so this was early 90s it must have been on..anyone got any shows that still give them the ick as an adult?

Sapphire and Steele. Not a kids program but seriously creepy

Mayjune11 · 22/01/2024 23:36

@LutonBeds yes! Thank you I was beginning to think I had dreamed it!

SaulGoodmanIsTaken · 22/01/2024 23:37

Tottie! More people remembered it than expected on the thread about heart breaking moments in kids tv

The Demon Headmaster
Are You Afraid of the Dark?
Goosebumps

I recently watched some of the old episodes of Are You Afraid of the Dark? On YouTube and they still gave me the creeps!

Just googled to check The boy from space was definitely the freaky one with lots of sandpit type scenes.
Also Through the Dragons eye had some really spooky scenes too , on a side note was there an old floppy disc BBC school computer game that went with this show ? I seem to remember apples / witches and dragons on the school computer …

'The Changes' 1975 science fiction TV show absolutely terrified me. People are suddenly scared of machines and Britain returns to a pre industrial era.
I also didn't sleep one night when I was about 10 (c1973) because I saw a tv programme which I think was about the nun supposed to haunt Borley Rectory. She was bricked into a wall as a punishment for trying to elope with a monk.

News stories about acid rain. I was about 6 and I thought it meant rain had become so acidic it would burn you. I used to try and get inside ASAP. Grin

I had forgotten about the Diddymen - horrifying! Then we moved to a house where my room had Diddymen wallpaper- it was there for ages🙀

Thanks also to the poster who reminded me about the long yellow fingernail- that had been buried in my subconscious since I was a small child - so glad it’s come back to the surface 😹- I am remembering more about it now - unfortunately!

FijiSea · 22/01/2024 23:41

Actually also Threads , the nuclear war tv show.
We were made to watch this in Modern Studies at school , honestly scarred me for life and made me forever fear a nuclear winter 😬

goldierocks · 22/01/2024 23:43

Just thought of another one, but I think most here will be too young to remember it. The vortex at the end of the Adventure Game - six year-old me thought those people really were being vaporised.

Rangdo the grouchy aspidistra plant ('Uncle') made me laugh....Gronda gronda!

I liked The Changes - but yes, scary. Let me with a lifelong wariness of electricity pylons! I read the books years later.

Not a kids’ programme, but Survivors: My DM let me stay up to watch it - I find the opening credits and music are still terrifying now - what a brilliant series!

GiveYourHeadAWobble · 22/01/2024 23:44

The first series of Round The Twist. The episode where they found some circus clothes and a scarecrow breaks into the lighthouse. It was honestly terrifying! Still my favourite tv show as a child though.

Clafoutie · 22/01/2024 23:45

Mr Hiccup always made me anxious!
This is a great thread OP

TheFifthTellytubby · 22/01/2024 23:45

Talos in Jason and the Argonauts. 😱

wobblyweasel · 22/01/2024 23:45

@Mojodojocasahaus I loved Evil Edna! Pipkins with that grotty, manky Hartley Hare. The theme tune to Magic Roundabout, apparently I used to scream whenever it came home. I recall a tv series called Quiet as a Nun, I think it was part of the Armchair Thriller programmes. Terrified me.

Ah that's the thing I meant. I thought it was Krypton Factor.

Dr Who
The Poltergeist films
Nightmare on Elm street

Hillsmakeyoustrong · 22/01/2024 23:51

I watched Threads last week for the first time! It was absolutely awful, I felt so depressed afterwards.

I have never been able to shake off The Woman in Black shown Christmas late 80s. I was a young teenager and I watched it on my own. I was absolutely terrified. Still can't think too much about it...

Yes, that was a whole new level of horrific. Many people report being scarred by this. I guess it got its message across, but I’m not sure it should have been shown in schools. It was ( I think?) later banned from being broadcast.

FijiSea · 22/01/2024 23:54

Thank god @Clafoutie
I do wonder how the teachers got away with half the stuff we watched.

tripthelightfantastically · 22/01/2024 23:54

Monkey! It was awful!!

FijiSea · 22/01/2024 23:56

I have to say all the scary stuff I watched was at school , at home I was watching Rainbow / Fraggle Rock / Puddle Lane , nice normal kids stuff 😆

Botanica · 22/01/2024 23:59

Things I shouldn't have watched on TV as a child but did - and suffered nightmares for years later as a result:

  • Ghostwatch (bloody Pipes!)
  • a mini series called Chimaera
  • a black and white film about children becoming trapped down a coal mine and having to chew on their leather belts to survive...
LauderSyme · 22/01/2024 23:59

Those seventies/eighties public service infomercials about nuclear war 😱

Northernsouloldies · 22/01/2024 23:59

Daisydaisy69 · 22/01/2024 23:09

Think this was an educational school programme or something?

The theme music though 😱

Picture box was weird, I'm sure there was one with a kid chasing a red balloon and it would stop then carry on.
