TV shows as a child that freaked you out

Just thought I would start a threat for fun, I was trying to describe this particular show to my partner and he had no idea what I was talking about but after much researching I found out it was Wizbit, which was played by Paul Daniels. The yellow hat and the rabbit honestly freaked me out. For context I'm 33 so this was early 90s it must have been on..anyone got any shows that still give them the ick as an adult?

Return to Oz... the Wheelers were so scary!

The Demon Headmaster

The Watcher in the Woods

Not aimed at children but I watched when I was about 10, Ghost Watch, with Sarah Green. So bloody scary!!

The whole Return to Oz film was scary. The Victorian hospital at the start, Mombi and her different heads, Jack Pumpkin head, the wheelers....

For some godforsaken reason I was allowed to watch Hammer House of Horror's The House That Bled at young primary school age.

Cue months of absolute terror.

Me too - and ditto the terror!

Do you remember the ‘scarecrow jury’ who would decide the fate of the other scarecrows? All there clapping their hands in that weird stiff way. And the punishment was to burn him alive!

Oh dear lord I’d forgotten that 😱

Not from my childhood but from my DC's, I find the NumberTaker from NumberJacks pretty creepy, as well as the weird pink spoon.

My youngest had nightmares about Numberjacks

squishee · 23/01/2024 08:15

As PP have said, Chocky and also Chimaera.

WavingCatsandDogs · 23/01/2024 09:53

The Number Taker from NumberJacks.

Not my childhood but my daughters.

Just weird,

AhBiscuits · 23/01/2024 09:55

Casualty and 999. Not really kids shows but I watched them and was terrified. The music from 999 still gives me anxiety, but I actually love shows like that these days.

I was fascinated by that series . Was it called Totty? Marchpain was the evil doll . Mr Plantagenet was the dad . Apple was burnt to death as I recall. Oooo I fancy watching it again. Like you said nobody ever seems to remember it !

I slightly remember it. Very gloomy.

Because there's an Emily mentioned in it and also in Bagpuss, I thought they were the same Emily and the Bagpuss Emily had this whole other disturbing life going on.

porridgeisbae · 23/01/2024 10:32

As for casualty- I must've been a bit older but there was an episode where someone went to use their asthma inhaler and accidentally inhaled a 5p or something.

As someone with slight asthma, it gave me the long term horrors. It still doesn't make me keep the cap on my inhaler in my bag, though. I've tasted dust a couple of times.

AutumnColour89 · 23/01/2024 12:19

There also was an episode of Casualty in the late 90s where the family of one of the staff all die in a gas explosion at home.
That really freaked me out as a child, for about a week I was terrified of turning on light switches etc in case it triggered an explosion!

The Boy from Space

I watched a thing called First born when I was about 10. It was about a baby that was born in some sort of lab and came out as a kind of violent monkey type thing I think . It was terrifying!

Smallonesaremorejuicy · 23/01/2024 12:54

Hope you aren't named Emily . Yes very disturbing x

lollipoprainbow · 23/01/2024 13:02

@porridgeisbae also it's the same man doing the voiceover !

@Ohyoudodoyou yes, they became far more sanistised/less scary. I remember as a 5/6 year old being taken round to the ‘big’ (junior) school to watch ‘Robbie’, produced by BR about the dangers of playing/crossing railway tracks. My DM worked at my primary after I’d left and I was talking about how it always stayed with me years later. She told me it was no longer shown in schools (would have been the 1990s or thereabouts) as it was now deemed ‘too scary’.

Wow, 5 or 6 is way too young to be exposed to that kind of thing. Thank goodness the times have changed!

Mind you, I read that 'Robbie' replaced 'The Finishing Line' which was the one I mentioned upthread (I'm a bit of a PIF nerd 😄) about a school sports day taking place on a railway track, which was eventually deemed to be too strong for kids and withdrawn. They weren't kidding - although if I'd seen it as a kid, it would have definitely deterred me from mucking around near railway lines. I think Robbie was considered softer by comparison!

What age would you suggest? It’s almost 40 years since I saw it and I’ve never forgotten, nor have I ever messed about on the railway. It worked! Kids need to be taught about dangers if they’re doing something they shouldn’t in an environment that can very quickly become dangerous.

TigerRag · 23/01/2024 18:16

Zzaaap!

It was more the fact that no one talked. Someone on Twitter did tell me it was because it was aimed at deaf children.

Squirrelsnut · 23/01/2024 18:25

Children of the Stones. The music alone is horrifying.
Lizzie Dripping. I was tiny and the witch was terrifying.
Dramarama spooky!
Worzel Gummidge with Jon Pertwee, when he removed his head.

Agree with PP; Are you afraid of the dark and Strange but True. There was an episode of Strange but True about a ghost on a trawler of some kind and it showed a yellow fisherman’s raincoat out on deck with no face in the hood Confused never forgot it!

Also, Chiller. Not a children’s programme at all but I saw an episode and was terrified
