TV shows as a child that freaked you out

Just thought I would start a threat for fun, I was trying to describe this particular show to my partner and he had no idea what I was talking about but after much researching I found out it was Wizbit, which was played by Paul Daniels. The yellow hat and the rabbit honestly freaked me out. For context I'm 33 so this was early 90s it must have been on..anyone got any shows that still give them the ick as an adult?

Going back a bit, but The Changes from 1974. For kids TV it was terrifying

Yes! I was walking in deserted fields that had huge pylons in them at the weekend and thought of The Changes.

There was a programme called 'The Survivors' on in the mid 70s,when I was 11/12 years old. It was about a deadly pandemic sweeping the world and killing 99% of anyone who caught it. I think it was created by Terry Nation, who if I recall correctly, was responsible for dreaming up the Daleks for Dr.Who. My parents would watch it and I remember it scaring the life out of me.

@newtlover you’re most welcome! I never saw it, (didn’t start watching till Tom Baker’s era) but there was a photo of the foam and weed attacking in a Dr Who magazine I used to have, and I thought it had to be what you described. I didn’t know the whole story had been “lost” (e the BBC destroyed it) till I searched for it. There are some cartoon recreations around.

Thank you @Magicmonster! I’m so excited to see it’s on YouTube but not sure if I dare watch 😂

'Thread' I think you mean not 'threat'! I remember Wizbit. Worzel Gummage and some of the characters in that and the darleks in Dr Who freaked me out!

My parents did a really stupid thing .
There was something on at the local park ( in '70s ) so they took me along .
It was Planet Of The Apes on horse back now , while I watched it and liked horses this freaked me the fuck out ,pulling trying to get away from them .God it was awful . They are so much scarier in real life than on tv .

The animated Watership Down movie scared me. Also was scared of the theme music to 999, which was a documentary with reconstructions of real-life emergencies. I remember my grandparents also watching a show called Strange But True about the paranormal and it was creepy!

sinesperanza · 03/04/2024 22:31

I seem to be the only one to remember Earthfasts

caringcarer · 03/04/2024 22:35

When Ds was little he was so afraid of the bit in Thunderbirds when the Hood's eyes flashed gold. He would need to leave the room!

The weeping angels

Daleks and the Dr Who episode with the boy in the gas mask

sinesperanza · 04/04/2024 15:32

At least I'm not alone @suburburban

I was convinced I'd be lost in a creepy underworld every time we went to the Dales (which was often)

There was a BBC Christmas series called The Box of Delights that we had as a box set and I watched as a young child... creepy af ... wolves, supernatural beings, man-sized rats, punch and judy men, it was all there. It made a deep impression though so found all the episodes on Youtube and watched them with my husband a couple of years ago and we both loved it this time. I won't be showing it to my DD any time soon though.

There was some horrible three part series on rabies that freaked me out. I recalled an alsatian frothing at the mouth.

An absolutely awful depressing film that was on TV on Xmas eve one year. It involved a boy that had cancer as a result of radioactive matter being dropped on him/near him further war. He died on Xmas eve under the Xmas tree. He had pet wolves I think that howled at his death. That was a cheery little film.

There were two films that still haunt me that my grandma let me sit up and watch when I was about 8. The first involved witchcraft and entailed a suspected witch being crushed to death by being placed under a wooden door and having rocks piled on top of her. Another involved two twin sisters (or maybe just sisters). On a car journey, one tied the others shoe laces together, the car crashed, went up in flames and she was unable to get out and died. She got her revenge by plotting the deaths of other family members, including using a pizza cutter through a bannister and causing someone to plunge to their death.

There was one awful film that I saw that stuck in my mind. I have never been able to track it down. It involved a teenage boy in Sheffield, I think, whose parents moved house without him one day. He ended up homeless in a parking lot with a bunch of equally depressing characters. One sat on top of a lifeguards chair whilst ringing an old air raid alarm. There was also someone who played a saxophone. I have hated the saxophone ever since.

And Threads. We were subjected to it at school. Now that was a cheery little film!

Yes the rabies one was called The Mad Death. I’ve just googled. I would have been 10 years old watching that it was terrifying.

Late 70s / early 80s… hammer house of horror episode about a creepy hitchhiker in a yellow raincoat with a very long fingernail on his little finger - I was absolutely terrified.. don’t think I should have been watching it (I was about 10) - what were my parents thinking…

That film was horrible! It was on not long ago and I was desperate to watch it again to see if it really was that bad but I couldn't because it was so freaky.
So glad someone else has seen it!
