TV shows as a child that freaked you out

Just thought I would start a threat for fun, I was trying to describe this particular show to my partner and he had no idea what I was talking about but after much researching I found out it was Wizbit, which was played by Paul Daniels. The yellow hat and the rabbit honestly freaked me out. For context I'm 33 so this was early 90s it must have been on..anyone got any shows that still give them the ick as an adult?

I didn't like moomins

Noseybonk, Worzel Gummidge and Chocky all freaked me out.

The moomins. I used to have reoccurring nightmares about them!

LutonBeds · 22/01/2024 21:53

Moondial too! Don’t think I finished that as I remember the episode where she’s stood outside in the dark and hears her name “Araminta Kate” chanted. No thanks!

The moomins terrified me, I still can't watch them. Not sure why.

I used to hate those public information adverts too; the escalator, power lines, spirit of dark and lonely water, Robbie….they worked though! Never forgot them and didn’t do anything dangerous as they petrified me. Loved Charly the cat though!

Lol

No trigger warnings back then as kids were mauled, zapped or got run over!

My DB hates the theme tune from the stop motion series. I think it’s beautiful, if melancholy.

Beyond belief - fact or fiction

sanferryanne · 22/01/2024 21:54

Children of the Stones, though it was brilliant at the same time.

God, yes. The Red Eyed Creature was terrifying.

BertieBotts · 22/01/2024 21:55

I was really upset/terrified by most of Disney's Alice in Wonderland, especially the Mad Hatter's Tea Party where they ruin the rabbit's watch and the oyster scene Shock

However we had it on VHS and I used to watch it again and again even though it gave me that horrible awful sickening feeling. I only realised decades later as an adult when I was browsing the Nightmare Fuel section on TV Tropes that what I was feeling when I watched those scenes was utter dread and fear Confused

ElevenSeven · 22/01/2024 21:56

Knightmare.

Also the Crystal Maze, used to think they were locked in forever

CassTheFox · 22/01/2024 21:57

Orm and Cheep… shudder

Mayjune11 · 22/01/2024 21:57

The one about the dolls house. There was an evil doll and some nice ones. There was a fire and one of the dolls died 😱. Just a fucking creepy program but nobody else remembers it!

welshweasel · 22/01/2024 21:57

Grotbags used to give me nightmares

kjv1234 · 22/01/2024 21:57

Grotbags. Had nightmares about her and even now I struggle to look at pictures of her!

Chrysanthemum5 · 22/01/2024 21:58

Dougal and the blue cat - beyond terrifying to the point where I don't think I could listen to it even now

Tessisme · 22/01/2024 21:58

Agree with pp about The Singing Ringing Tree. It terrified me.

Also I used to find Catweazle rather disturbing. I think it was supposed to be funny, but I wasn't getting the joke!

Ooh yes, they were sinister. Also 'Charlie says...'

Was about to post exactly the same thing. Just imagine the pitch to children's TV producers for that character.

Stuff of nightmares!

Farmhouse1234 · 22/01/2024 21:59

rentaghost - especially the jester who use to sit crossed legged

some of the series they’d show at school (tv shows made especially for education? I think - don’t recall them ever being on any other time). One was set in a castle. Can’t recall names - but gives me the shivers now. Probably mid 1980s?

Tottie: Story of a Dolls House. The girls were Emily & Charlotte and the evil doll was Marchpane.

Rentaghost was pretty weird.

Yep! Loved it though, Mr Claypole!
