TV shows as a child that freaked you out

Just thought I would start a threat for fun, I was trying to describe this particular show to my partner and he had no idea what I was talking about but after much researching I found out it was Wizbit, which was played by Paul Daniels. The yellow hat and the rabbit honestly freaked me out. For context I'm 33 so this was early 90s it must have been on..anyone got any shows that still give them the ick as an adult?

Dr who. The darleks terrified the shit out of me

JobMatch3000 · 22/01/2024 23:19

Not from my childhood but from my DC's, I find the NumberTaker from NumberJacks pretty creepy, as well as the weird pink spoon.

hellsBells246 · 22/01/2024 23:21

The Mad Death. About rabies. It was terrifying. God knows what my parents were doing letting 10yo me watch it.

For some godforsaken reason I was allowed to watch Hammer House of Horror's The House That Bled at young primary school age.

Cue months of absolute terror.

Treegarden · 22/01/2024 23:24

The dark crystal 😳😟

Chico the Rainmaker.
Not a TV program but a series shown weekly at the Saturday morning kids club at our local cinema . Children find a talking shunken Amazonian head in a box and have adventures with it .

@Footgoose Ah yes, I remember Chico the rainmaker. It was on at our local ABC cinema club on a Saturday morning. I could still sing the theme tune. 'Chico Chico the rainmaker, Chico pak a wanna wanna make the rain' He was very bizarre!

It seems to me that there at r a few older people on here so childhood in the 70/80's meant that we had to access to what looks like children's tv shows to deliberately terrify, well, children! There are some proper horrors amongst these examples.
Did subsequent children's programmes become more 'sunny' ?

Daisydaisy69 · 22/01/2024 23:09

Think this was an educational school programme or something?

The theme music though 😱

Thank you. As I was scrolling through I was trying to summon up the memory of this ominous sounding tv theme and you posted it.

Corilee2806 · 22/01/2024 23:28

Does anyone remember Dizzy Heights Hotel? Probably early 90s. Spitting image style puppets with a Fawlty towers vibe, actual nightmare fuel. There was an episode where one of the main characters, maybe the mum, started trying to eat people?!

ReadingSoManyThreads · 22/01/2024 23:28

Jim'll Fix It.

He gave me the creeps, always. No idea why people fawned over him. No idea why the world was shocked when the obvious was exposed.

goldierocks · 22/01/2024 23:28

I agree completely @Starfish125, Wizbit was just so weird!!!

I loved Knightmare, but the life force indicator used to freak me out. Not only the skull graphics, but also the increasing heartbeat sound.

Fenella the witch from Chorlton and the Wheelies scared 5 year-old me, although I liked the spikey things.

Zelda from Terrahawks was pretty scary. I always think of her if I'm ever tempted to go out in the sunshine without sunscreen.

Ohyoudodoyou · 22/01/2024 23:28

Hatty Town was a bit weird.

thisiswheretheseagullfliesaway · 22/01/2024 23:29

I wasn't scared of much but was banned from watching The Littlest Hobbo as I cried so much, couldn't understand why he couldn't get a nice home and stay 😭 (would have defeated the point of the story lol 🤦).

Howard's End depressed me as it was bath and bedtime on a Sunday night. School wasn't a good experience for me

DS was terrified of Lazy Towns Robbie Rotten. One memorable time DH skidded on his knees across the floor to turn of the TV off before he noticed.

Noseybonk. Utterly terrifying.

I'd forgotten about Noseybonk, yes utterly terrifying.
I hated Worzel Gummidge and had recurring nightmares about him as a child. He still makes me feel very unnerved.

LauderSyme · 22/01/2024 23:30

I used to watch That's Life and one episode they did a consumer rights piece about damp homes covered in awful black mould.

After that I lay rigid with fear in the dark, in bed, convinced that mould was spreading silently across my celing and walls and coming for me.

Alessya · 22/01/2024 23:31

The Tripods, with how they’d take people up inside and do something to their brains so they thought the Tripods were great. Shiver.

Moondial and Knightmare.

And Round the Twist, I can’t really remember what it was about but I know that whenever I heard the theme tune my heart would start beating faster and I’d want to leave the room but never did.

Trinity65 · 22/01/2024 23:31

The original Bungle in Rainbow. Stuff of Nightmares.

The really blonde alien boy and the strange sounds he made. . and the strange guy on his tail. Forgot the name of it

Quiet as a Nun

Children of the Stones, though it was brilliant at the same time.

Terrifying.

Worzel Gummidge gave me the creeps. I used to run out of the room when he started twisting his head off.

Yes! Was about to post exactly the same. I absolutely hated Worzel Gummidge still gives me the creeps to even think about.

Same here! There was some wallpaper peeling off upstairs in our house and I was terrified to go up alone after watching that.

TremendousTurnip · 22/01/2024 23:32

Round the Twist- particularly the episode with the dead fox fur stole coming back to life and the episode with the dragon in the cave!

Also The Moomins- the fact they talked but had no mouths freaked me out as a child!

Trinity65 · 22/01/2024 23:32

Jewelanemone · 22/01/2024 21:40

That awful bloody Hartley Hare and his revolting stumpy arms.

😆😆

I can't remember where I read it but somebody compared Hartley Hare to roadkill

TremendousTurnip · 22/01/2024 23:33

Oh and Trapdoor was scary AF

The Boy From Space, watched at school !!! Along with Wordy the wierd orange thing !

Yes was about to mention these .
We watched some really freaky stuff at school in the 80’s.
Cant remember which one of these had the scenes of people running up through like desert hill / space landscape etc.
They were quite sinister feeling.

Mademetoxic · 22/01/2024 23:34

Goosebumps. The dog eyes and the music terrified me.

I was too young to watch it, but I remember being scared by it.
