It's not just that Starmer handled this badly, how was someone with these views selected to stand in the first place? They wouldn't just say something like this out of nowhere, it is part of their whole attitude and should have been known already

I hope to god this prompts them to do a further check on all their candidates. They cannot afford any more incidents like this. I don't think this will actually cost them significant votes, but losing candidates is not very helpful!

Mine is: Sunak, right? Because that's what he kept saying last night ("right?") and it was utterly cringeworthy.

I think that perhaps the selection is less rigorous for established local politicians - and that applies to both the main parties. I’m so pissed off about this, it’s entirely avoidable. Hopefully a lesson has been learnt.

I suspect this won’t matter much by the end of the week. Should Starmer have dealt with it on Sunday? Yes, but it isn’t a total disaster. People aren’t really voting for Labour. They are voting to get Tories out. And while the Tories are busy focusing on culture wars and not the stuff that matters to the majority of people Labour have quite a lot of leeway.

Sadly I also suspect that there’s enough anti Israel feeling because of the atrocities in Gaza and anti Semitism that more people than you’d expect might quietly agree with that conspiracy theory. Or at least think there’s some truth to it.

Probably in the minority here but I am fairly comfortable with Keir Starmer not responding too much as if you don't say it then "they" can't twist it.
As a thought, any independents standing in Rochdale who could then move to Labour once elected? That might be good.

“… people in glass houses ..” this us the thing. The Tories think they are untouchable. They bank heavily on the very short memories of the public ,who are known to latch on to the very next next thing making the rounds, however inconsequential they may be in the grand scheme of things.
The very many, many, almost inconceivable atrocities committed by the Conservatives, some of whom are still in govt but people ll rather talk about how Kier Starmer is “Yukonijhtyygv” ( insert all the nonsense they all come out with ).
