WTAF! That is appalling... 23 percent? Is this a joke?

If you make a lot of money, there are ways to make sure you don't pay much tax on it.

Yes, it's just very relevant to us at the moment to do with my DD who is being clobbered for 45% tax on a redundancy payment after working her arse off for 12 years...
And the multi millionaire Sunak pays 23 percent when his wife earned £14M last year in dividends from InfoSys (the family Co that is being awarded our money from government contracts)

Sorry. Rant over

I thought the first £30k of redundancy payments were tax free? My friend got round this by putting everything above this into her pension.

Hi Bloss, yes she's taking advice, I hope for her she can work it out.

Telegraph

Wellingborough focus group spells big trouble for the Tories on Thursday

> All voted Tory in 2019 — but won’t again
> Sunak “financially on another planet”and panel preferred Boris Johnson
> Anger over PMQs trans jibe & Bone’s girlfriend as candidate

All participants reacted negatively to a transgender jibe made by Mr Sunak...

"Claire said the joke “absolutely turned my stomach”, while Millie added: “It’s just so insensitive. It’s about trying to score points but not knowing your audience. He just doesn’t get it.”

AdamRyan · 10/02/2024 20:49

Thank fuck the general public don't appear to be idiots
Although really standing Peter Bones girlfriend was a special kind of goadiness from the Tories

Although really standing Peter Bones girlfriend was a special kind of goadiness from the Tories

It is very sexist of you to suggest she might be influenced by her partner. 😁

I wonder how those Tory MPs endorsing Trump will justify themselves now he has said that if elected, he would not only refuse to defend Europe, but he would gladly support Putin,"

newnamethanks · 11/02/2024 09:18

In Plain Sight. There are no excuses but I expectbthe Con party will drag some up.

Trump says he would 'encourage' Russia to attack Nato allies who do not pay their bills - BBC News

Addressing crowds during the rally in South Carolina, Mr Trump said he had made his comments about Russia during a meeting of leaders of Nato countries.
He recalled that the leader of a "big country" had presented a hypothetical situation in which he was not meeting his financial obligations within Nato and had come under attack from Moscow.
Mr Trump said the leader had asked if the US would come to his country's aid in that scenario, which prompted him to issue a rebuke.
"I said: 'You didn't pay? You're delinquent?'... 'No I would not protect you, in fact I would encourage them to do whatever they want. You gotta pay.'"

And still they'll vote for him.

IClaudine · 11/02/2024 09:44

God, that photo of him! He must ruin a lot of shirts.

DuncinToffee · 11/02/2024 09:55

A couple of recent statements

Boris Johnson - Trump will back Ukraine and make the West stronger and the world a safer place"

Rees-Mogg - Trump is "a friend of the UK"

Miriam Cates - world was a "safer place" under Donald Trump

Jake Berry - Trump would make “much better president than Biden”

Notonthestairs · 11/02/2024 10:07

I wonder how much coverage Trump's comments will actually get.

Leading NATO member encouraging Russian aggression should be front page stuff to my mind.

It isn't appearing on the first page of my Sky or BBC news apps.

I suspect Mogg, Cates, Johnson etc will hope this story flies under the radar.

I think it's bloody terrifying.

Notonthestairs · 11/02/2024 10:17

If elected, Trump will abandon NATO, with frightening consequences for American, European and Asian security, prosperity and trade

Annexation Applebaum has written an article for the Atlantic.

My takeaway is that Trump doesn't even need to withdraw, by just signaling that the US is an unreliable partner, may be enough to change politics across much of the world as countries decide they'd be better off to lean into Russia/China.

DuncinToffee · 11/02/2024 10:23

Thanks for that article, terrifying read

(bit worried about your autocorrect Anne to Annexation Wink)

Notonthestairs · 11/02/2024 10:31

Whoops! It's my inner warmongering dictator emerging

Roussette · 11/02/2024 11:38

It is terrifying. Hearing him speak and friend up with Putin is so so worrying... I can't imagine what is going to happen in the Election, I usually watch parts of it overnight, not sure I can bear to.

Notonthestairs · 11/02/2024 13:04

That is very grim reading and makes me furious. Those kind of forced changes (not replacing teachers or support staff, amalgamating class etc) can only have a negative impact on children's learning. It can't do much for staff morale - which given the failure to recruit enough teachers in key subjects is already a problem.

My kids are at much later stages of education (KS4) but I worry for those in earlier years.

Notonthestairs · 11/02/2024 13:09

In January 2024 54,308 patients had a 12 hour wait to be admitted to A&E.

In January 2020 it was 2847.

In January 2015 it was 650.

In January 2011 it was 17.

17!!!

Stats nicked from this thread from Liam Thorpe at the Liverpool Echo - worth a quick read.

jasflowers · 11/02/2024 13:12

remember that when he became PM Sunak claimed education was his priority, indeed that it’s what inspired him into politics

Power/Influence is what inspired him.

If he has any genuine interest in education, its in Private Schooling.

He did donate a bottle of wine to a school in his constituency.......
