Seems Sunak snuck down here today in complete secrecy. Met with the MP who’ll be running in tractor porn guys new seat.

23% tax rate for Sunak, how lovely for him

Rishi Sunak paid half a million in tax last year.

Tax returns show the PM paid £508,308 in the year 2022/23

Sunak dropped into town here the other week .Local college politics class alerted and hurtled into city for the chance to heckle but, sadly, Rishi had already vanished. All greatly disappointed.

Jogging with the awful Johnny?

RafaistheKingofClay · 09/02/2024 18:45

Not sure. I think he was in Cornwall yesterday and popped in on the way back. Just didn’t tell any media.

Must be desperate. This wouldn’t usually be a seat that’s up for grabs.

BIossomtoes · 09/02/2024 18:55

Not telling the media isn’t like Rishi - he’s normally all over a photo opportunity.

Sunak visited a dentist in Cornwall who isn't accepting adult NHS patients, apparently that was a deliberate choice Hmm

No Dentist in Cornwall takes new NHS adult patients, not even sure if any take children unless the parent is a private patient and then only up to 11yo.

RafaistheKingofClay · 09/02/2024 19:09

Don’t think there are any/many in Devon either. I don’t have one.

L1ttledrummergirl · 09/02/2024 21:09

The nearest NHS dentist to me that's taking on patients is an hour away.
Until recently my dm was with an NHS dentist, the practice wrote her a snotty letter saying that the NHS dentist was leaving and they would have to make other arrangements for a dentist. They could though, offer a private dental service if she could afford it. The tone was very much looking down on NHS patients.

Not only did dm phone the manager to tell them that the tone was inappropriate, she also told them that she would happily see a private dentist- but not with them due to the attitude in the letter. She now uses an alternative private dentist.

I'm not a fan of being in the dentist chair, and my last dentist was being pursued by a friend for compensation after they dislocated her jaw while removing a tooth, and sending her home without telling her. I know longer have an NHS dentist.

jasflowers · 10/02/2024 07:33

Technically, my DD has been on an NHS waiting list for over 23 years, never heard back from whoever runs this "list" we re-registered a few times too, pre and post new Dental contract in 2006.

This was under Labour, there were NHS dentists available in Cornwall but we never actually got one

The fees for dental work is eye watering, just to register its around £175, a crown £600+, one filling £150 to £200, emergency £300 plus treatment costs.

A Denplan policy, reduces these by a few pounds.

2016MyLove · 10/02/2024 09:06

As PP said about their DM, my dentist practice was the same and said you're off the books as an NHS patient as we will be private from now - sorry and off you trot. TBH they were crap. The dentist kept changing, it was never the same one. My sister visited the last one who was so hotheaded, he was latino so that might be why, but he got really frustrated trying to work on her back tooth because she had a small mouth and threw his tools down, total hothead and not what you want in a dentist! She was so upset and asked to transfer to another in the practice but then they wrote to everyone saying no more NHS.

We now have a completely different dentist and pay private £22 a month which covers 2 checkups and 2 hygienist visits. Any work we get 15% discount. I had a filling and it cost £152 and I was like wooooah, but the treatment I got was wonderful and I cannot knock them. Suppose it's like the saying, you get what you pay for.

I now put money aside each month out of my wage in a dentist saving account, just in case. My DM said to do it! Hopefully anything major will be covered, but I am young and have mainly good teeth, so hopefully can build up a buffer.

I will stay private now, but want a fully functioning NHS dentist service for all children, pensioners and the poor. Not everyone can afford to pay like me and my sister. That's why I am voting for Labour in the hope they can reform it.

RafaistheKingofClay · 10/02/2024 09:13

Mine went no more NHS last year too. Just check and the nearest dentist accepting NHS patient is 84 miles away.

IClaudine · 10/02/2024 09:18

We moved to "Labour run Wales" a few years ago and found an NHS dentist easily. When that practice closed, we were transferred to another NHS dentist. I think in other parts of Wales it is more difficult, though.

IClaudine · 10/02/2024 09:20

This is interesting. Labour now leading in all age groups, including over 65s.

Clearly the 'back to square one with Labour' slogan is working. Just not the way the Conservatives intended.

This "debt falling story" seems to be designed to confuse people

Rishi Sunak insists debt is 'on schedule' to fall - despite mocking of minister Laura Trott who made same claim | Politics News | Sky News

As far as I can tell, our debt is rising and so is GDP. We also have to pay interest on our debt (which will rise as the debt is rising)

The percentage of debt to GDP will increase from 86.1 % to 93.2% and will then come down to 92.8%

I guess with the increase in debt, that means we pay more in interest which comes out of our taxes / borrowing

(£83 BILLION on debt interest - about 5% of total spending)

But at this point, most people will have switched off as it gets into technical definitions.

However - it looks to me that the level of debt is rising - and then the level of debt relative to GDP comes down slightly.

As the statistics regulator said:

"Members of the public cannot be expected to understand the minutiae of public finance statistics and the precise combination of definitional choices that might need to be made for a particular claim to be true," the regulator Sir Robert Chote said.

Oh look another problem that any idiot should have been able to foresee.

The other issue with government debt is that people don’t really understand that government debt isn’t really like household debt. And borrowing more isn’t exactly an issue if repayments are small and GDP increases as a result of whatever you are investing in.

I can see all lorries with food in doing the 21 mile trip to be checked that it's all ok.

I am sure no smuggler would try to exploit any loopholes

Smugglers notoriously rule abiding.

Daily Express on Sunak's taxes

Rishi Sunak's tax bill rises by eye-watering amount as PM publishes financial details | Politics | News | Express.co.uk

All together, it means Mr Sunak paid a tax rate of 23 percent - much lower than the top rate of 45 percent. Some of the income was taxed separately in the US, with the capital gains tax lower at 20 percent.
The Trades Union Congress (TUC) tweeted after the release: "It really is a mystery why Rishi Sunak raised income tax but not capital gains tax."
The tax return has raised questions about why Mr Sunak appears to hold much of his wealth in the US rather than the UK, with many of his investments based there.
