I was taught modern studies in Dundee by George Galloway’s father @Piggywaspushed and @IClaudine

Edited

Ooh. What was he like? Did he ever talk about George?

Piggywaspushed · 12/02/2024 19:12

Oh, were you??

Claim to fame!

bentneckwine1 · 12/02/2024 19:15

His father was a trade union man who I think influenced me to be politically aware. Homework was to read the same story in lots of different newspapers and look for the bias.

He mentioned his son being away a lot

BestIsWest · 12/02/2024 19:19

Dads and George Galloway - mine was on an interview panel when he was looking for a constituency as a Labour candidate. They rejected him.

On a slightly light hearted note I offer the Pet Abduction Bill. Specifically clause 6a under which it will become a crime to induce a cat to leave its lawfully owner. Presumably written by someone who has never met a cat.

<shoves next door’s cat out of the kitchen>

How the hell will they prove inducement? It's not like they can interview the cat for Dreamies bribes.

Jason118 · 12/02/2024 18:54

I think you'll find that cats aren't in fact pets so the law will not apply.

For one joyous second I thought jgw was back when I read that.

A new Tory campaign on fraud has been community noted for making fraudulent claims.

Sunak on Gbeebies now. "Back to square one". Trying and failing to be sincere.

Saucery · 12/02/2024 20:06

I agree with the Bill as treating stolen animals like a stolen mobile phone is outdated, particularly when those animals might be used as bait in dog fights etc.
However, 6a makes me slightly nervous about my habit of speaking to any cat I come across. The friendly ones follow me for a Psss pssss pssss and a chuck under the chin! If they can then turn round and accuse me of abducting them….. Shock

RafaistheKingofClay · 12/02/2024 20:31

Yes. Dogs are very different to cats. Dogs have owners whereas cats have slaves.

I assume saying psss psss psss to a cat that isn’t yours will become outlawed. Not sure if this counts if the cat is sunning itself on my decking or curls up asleep on my lap.

And that’s in addition to the lack of awareness of the Tories promoting a crack down on fraud.

Think fraud. No not that fraud, or that one. And definitely don’t mention the time the anti-corruption tzar quit because there was too much corruption.

tobee · 12/02/2024 23:51

Hmm. The Rochdale situation. Don't want to ignore the headlines:-

Labour withdraws support for Rochdale candidate www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-68280098

IClaudine · 13/02/2024 06:59

Starmer has messed this up completely. He should have suspended Ali right from the moment this (the October 7 comments) came out.

This is a gift to the Tories and all the Labour supporters who hate Starmer and who seem to actually prefer the prospect of another Tory government. The latter are especially hypocritical. Some of them have voiced some very dubious views about what happened on October 7. But they are happy to put the boot in over this.

IClaudine · 13/02/2024 07:02

Honestly, I am more worried than ever now that Labour is going to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.😪

jasflowers · 13/02/2024 07:54

The Tories are certainly making hay with this story.

Its a problem for Labour, whether or not Ali dropped instantly, the tories would still have had a field day.

Papers like the Sun Mail Express and much of the MSM don't report as gleefully on Tory screw ups/broken promises, the NHS or sexual scandals and Labour don't seem to have nounce to capitalise either.

I think the next GE will be far closer than current polls predict.

L1ttledrummergirl · 13/02/2024 07:57

It's not just that Starmer handled this badly, how was someone with these views selected to stand in the first place? They wouldn't just say something like this out of nowhere, it is part of their whole attitude and should have been known already.

Labour will not win the Rochdale by election as a result, the best they can hope for is that the tories don't win it either. This leaves it wide open for more extremist views as the electorate show their displeasure.

There will also be people who don't follow politics or the news and will just see Labour on the ballot paper and vote accordingly. The whole thing is a mess.

Starmer needs to get his shit together fast.

Notonthestairs · 13/02/2024 08:29

I agree that if a candidate is going to fall for such a blatant and horrendous conspiracy theory then they aren't equipped to be an MP (Andrew Bridgen being another example of this). Ali shouldn't have passed vetting in the first place.
It is undeniably a fuck up, exacerbated by the fact that they are unable to withdraw his candidacy. I assume Galloway and the Reform candidate will both benefit directly from it.

That said, reading about it in the Times this morning, the writer had added words to the effect that the Conservatives will argue that this is proof that Labour will do anything to gain power - perhaps assuming that we can't remember "Oven Ready Deals' or that they are intent on offering tax cuts whilst public services fall apart.

DuncinToffee · 13/02/2024 08:48

It's a mess and Labour got this wrong.

The cynic in me wonders about the mail's timing leaking the audio.

jasflowers · 13/02/2024 08:53

Labour have now compounded the issue by not putting out anyone to defend/justify the about turn.

Of course the Tories have their people out and even Sky presenters calling it "weak"

the Mail will time it to cause max embarrassment & to ensure Lab cannot put up an alt candidate.

DuncinToffee · 13/02/2024 08:59

Tories will do all to put the spotlight on Labour away from the 2 by elections and the Rwanda debate in HoL, MSM obliges.

Flamme · 13/02/2024 09:27

People seem to think that the legislation on stealing animals will help to protect owners' rights, but ironically the proposed penalty for stealing a cat is actually more lenient than what a criminal would get under current law.
