The ship radar would have been interesting.

There are ferries that couldn't dock last night because of the waves.
That would have been a bad night.

@RampantIvy

Have to dash but having quickly reread it I hope that response didn’t come across as a bit terse…if I don’t get some work done today ………..

That's perfectly OK. Thank you.

Lots of knowledge on this thread very interesting! I’m learning so much about a topic I previous couldn’t care less about. I’ve got a new hobby I think 😂

BellaTheDarkOverlord · 22/01/2024 09:02

That Belfast Leeds is climbing again. I’m in Bradford and the weather is not letting up at all here.

Looks like it might be heading for EMA. It’s calmer here this morning and beautiful blue sky and sunshine 🌞🛬

Same 😂 I was awake until gone 2 this morning, inwardly cheering at any successful landing!

The Red Arrows are out again this morning (over Lincolnshire).

Newmum738 · 22/01/2024 09:23

We flew Krakow to Bristol last night. It took longer than normal to land the plane but we made it. The pilot seemed to be enjoying!

Lurleene · 22/01/2024 09:25

I flew from Scotland to the South Coast yesterday afternoon, it was pretty hairy when we landed but seeing all these reports of cancellations and diversions I feel very fortunate that I got home as planned.

Our pilot was newly qualified - I know this because his partner was on the flight, being flown by him for the first time. He made a speech over the intercom to thank her for supporting him along the way and being his true co-pilot. It was very sweet.

SurreyMumOfOne · 22/01/2024 09:30

I lived in Leeds in the early 2000s and frequently had to travel to Heathrow for work day trips, on the now defunct BMI using some pretty dated Fokker aircraft. Every single time was a guessing game as to whether or not we'd be able to go. Often, we would be put on a bus to Manchester, at which point half the passengers would give up, because so many were business day trips. Now of course many of those meetings could be done on zoom anyway.

Clearinguptheclutter · 22/01/2024 09:36

Fun video of a (non-) landing at Dublin last night (the commentary is fun, the flight doesn’t look fun at all!)

this munich to Dublin flight went back to Munich

I’m near MAN and the weather is super calm atm. Sure it’ll be chaos at the airport now with many planes in the wrong places but hopefully a spell of calm weather will help put things right

The wind is due to pick up again from midday, though! I hope they can get a lot of the chaos sorted out in the time before that.

Hyacinth1000 · 22/01/2024 09:51

a few years ago we had two attempts at landing at Leeds, got down to about 30 foot of the runway and then back up. Did massive loops around Leeds in between attempts, on the third go the pilot aborted trying at around 500 feet and we went on to Newcastle to land. It was quite scary and we were all glad when we landed. We had announcements after the third attempt to tell us where we were going.
Then in Newcastle had to wait a while for busses to Leeds and a couple of hours journey down. Picked up the car and there had been a massive car crash on the M1 so the roads were gridlocked. Finally got home about 10 hours after take off for a 4 hour flight.

RampantIvy · 22/01/2024 09:57

Pity they closed Doncaster Sheffield airport. It had a long runway as well and could accommodate the larger planes.

Clearinguptheclutter · 22/01/2024 10:10

With LBA being such a disaster last night I was somewhat surprised to see that most of the early departures (6-7am) got away ok.
either airlines must have had some spare planes parked (not unheard of in winter) or perhaps managed to reposition some which landed elsewhere between midnight and 6am. Good effort either way.

MirandaWest · 22/01/2024 10:17

I wouldn’t quite say they got away all right - a couple between 6 and 7 left around 9 but there were cancellations and delays as well. And a couple of flights departing but from East Midlands which might not be the most useful for everyone!

I can only see two Jet2’s that got out this morning, they’d have had plenty of planes in situ this morning. Ryanair, not so much!

Clearinguptheclutter · 22/01/2024 10:22

Fair point it turns out I was looking at Sunday early departures (hides behind rock)

Ha, doesn’t look like anything has landed at LBA yet this morning. I imagine it’s hell in there this morning, there’ll be so many people waiting.

Agreed, could have saved a whole lot of hassle yesterday!

Looks like a sole ryanair has finally made it in to LBA. The first this morning.

SurreyMumOfOne · 22/01/2024 10:51

Lots of Typhoons out of Conningsby too. I'm sure they are every day, I just don't normally look!

SurreyMumOfOne · 22/01/2024 10:55

Is this a coastguard helicopter? It's been hovering in the same spot over the sea for quite some time now.
