London, so the least affected, in theory - but our gates and fences are rattling madly, and a couple of rubbish bins have gone rolling down the road

Hertfordshire - old paddling pool taken flight and loose cladding slowly being ripped from the house piece by piece and remainder sounds like a percussion instrument. Lots of creaking going on and hoping it's not the gas pipes that are halfway up the house 😬 very much looking forward to around 3am when it settles down. Lost a few fence panels in earlier storms.

THEDEACON · 21/01/2024 23:43

Central Scotland torrential rain very strong gusts that are actually shaking the building and I'm anxious about the proximity of trees

squidgybits · 21/01/2024 23:43

Glasgow, my curtains are moving in front of my "double glazed" windows which I am sitting and sleeping as far away from as possible
scary biscuits

JanetandRita · 21/01/2024 23:44

Edinburgh, I hate the wind after having a terrifying experience in the 1987 hurricane. I'm under the covers with earplugs. Dh snoring, kids sleeping through it so far. I'm watching the security cameras and can see the garden chair swinging wildly. Why on earth are they allowing flights in this!?

LadyRoughDiamond · 21/01/2024 23:45

Suffolk coast and it’s really ramping up now. Husband is away, I’m laying in bed worrying about several large trees around us. Have put TV on to try to distract from the noise.

N.Ireland. Worst I remember in my lifetime. Lots of damage everywhere and an absolutely huge number of power cuts.

Currently thinking of those working in the emergency services and the electric company who are out there right now putting their lives at risk trying to deal with such a huge number of incidents!

Hoping it passes by soon. Absolutely terrified and it feels like it could be a long night!

Me too North West near the coast lost count of number of trees blocking the roads and 10s of 1000s without power. Its very bad

OldPodge · 21/01/2024 23:45

Oh my, I’m in France at the moment and worried about you all! Will I have a house to go home to? Anyone know what it’s like in East Sussex?

Talisin · 21/01/2024 23:46

South London. Very noisy earlier then we had a lull for about 3/4 hour and now it’s come roaring back. Unfortunately, it’s blowing in the exact direction to get under the facings at the back of the house which is where my bedroom is so I haven’t bothered to go to bed as the banging is ridiculous. My awaiting-collection Christmas tree has been blown back up my drive and is in front of my front door now.

I’ve charged all devices, dug out some torches and downloaded a couple of shows to my ipad, just in case, but the power seems OK so far.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 21/01/2024 23:46

NE Scotland - really wild. The wind howling down the chimney is quite frightening.

kookit · 21/01/2024 23:47

Weirdly feels v quiet here in Derbyshire - it's been pouring with rain all evening, but the wind itself doesn't seem too bad at all? It was pretty gusty earlier, but right now it's steady.

dementedpixie · 21/01/2024 23:48

Central belt in Scotland. Fence down on one side although one bit is still attached and is flapping about (ironically not the side secured with cable ties from the last storm). Garden furniture blowing about the decking. Dread to look in the morning

PropertyManager · 21/01/2024 23:48

Callmemummynotmaaa · 21/01/2024 23:42

London. Part of our house has blown off and damaged neighbors car (fairly extensively). Unfortunately we are also having building works done so now I’m terrified a long drawn out legal battle will somehow find us negligent (even though the damage is due to the storm). Neighbours are being lovely, but their car is worth my entire years income, and I’m panicked. Ahh!!

Insurance will sort it, between their car insurance, your house insurance and possibly the builders insurance - let the insurance companies work it out, thats what you pay em for!

CatsTheWayToDoIt · 21/01/2024 23:48

I’m in Hove OldPodge - near the seafront. Very windy and rainy - worse than we’ve seen this year but compared to the messages I’m reading here not as bad. I can hear the stones smashing onto the path beside the beach and the waves sound really loud.

TurquoiseDress · 21/01/2024 23:49

SE London here

V noisy & wind howling outside for the last few hours, can hear gates flapping in the wind, wonder how many fences & trees will be down when I drive to work tomorrow morning?

MeandBobbyMcGoo · 21/01/2024 23:51

Edinburgh. Very windy. Usually dont hear a thing in other storms but this one is somehow hitting us. DCs sleeping in the lounge and not their loft bedrooms.

CharlotteBog · 21/01/2024 23:51

Essex/Suffolk border.
I'm going to put my ear plugs in and try not to worry.
I'm glad I got my old doors and windows replaced a few years ago, the new ones are pretty sound proof.

OldPodge · 21/01/2024 23:51

Thanks Cats.

Channellingsophistication · 21/01/2024 23:53

Berkshire here. Tree down on main road. Cat out til late but in now! Very windy next doors tv aeriel clanking. Cant really sleep!

Sandals12 · 21/01/2024 23:55

AwaaFaeHom · 21/01/2024 23:16

It doesn't seem bad to me - but I lived in a place that was geared up for it. I've experienced winds where it seemed like the windows were going to blow in, you could watch the glass bowing under the pressure.

So this seems pretty normal for this time of year - but where I live now isn't nearly so prepared for high winds. There is travel disruption here and there's definitely a much higher risk of damage to property or trees falling etc than there would be if I still lived at 'home' with this same level of wind.

Shetland by any chance?;-) yes all familiar sounds from there, wind on the windows. Barely any trees to fall.

suki1964 · 21/01/2024 23:56

NE Coast of Northern Ireland and tbh its not too bad. The power has flickered on and off all night but still holding and is the Internet. Sure its noisy and trying to get in and out of the car earlier was difficult but we have had a lot worse here, without it being forecast

The West coast is getting a severe battering as usual :(

Now the hurricane of 87 was a storm. I remember crying where seeing places like Richmond park totally flattened. I worked in a hospital so had to get into work that morning after showering in cold water. No buses, no tubes, no trains, not many cars cos nearly every road had a tree down, scaffold down, chimneys down, hoardings down.

The wind seems to be slowing down now, the strong gusts are getting further apart. Hopefully the roads will be clear enough for work tomorrow, I lost a day Friday cos of the snow

whitebreadjamsandwich · 21/01/2024 23:58

We've just been upgraded to a red warning for between 1 and 5am

SomeCatFromJapan · 22/01/2024 00:00

@OldPodge My friend is near the seafront in Brighton and says her windows sound like they're going to blow in! She has single glazing though and us only a street back from the water.

LadyChilli · 22/01/2024 00:02

Minymile · 21/01/2024 23:22

The Met office are advising people not to sleep near windows tonight. So be careful MNs

The Met are also calling the storm a tornado for parts of the north.

Are you sure this isn't the joke post that's on Twitter etc about Apple users being OK? I fell for it when I saw it earlier and checked the met office and saw no advice about sleeping away from windows.

@squidgybits dp you have your vents closed? I find that makes the difference.

Glasgow here like a few PP. I think I've heard wind as bad recently but perhaps not so prolonged and on all sides of the house.

BonnieBairn · 22/01/2024 00:03

aintnospringchicken · 21/01/2024 22:20

We're in the East of Scotland and it's blowin' a hoolie out there.

I'm East of Scotland too. 4 trees down on main roads already. My windows are old and due to be replaced in march.......Will be lucky if they last the night! Have moved the kids to the living room to sleep as it's not getting battered.

HollyKnight · 22/01/2024 00:04

My cat kennel blew away :(

I have plucked 3 recycling boxes out from under the front of my car so far, and had to tape my letterbox shut because the rattling was driving me crazy.
