London, so the least affected, in theory - but our gates and fences are rattling madly, and a couple of rubbish bins have gone rolling down the road

Reading area. Powers been out for 2 hours now for whole village. Says they hope to restore by midday tomorrow and I hope they are right garden furniture in my living room as it was about to fly out of my garden!.

No internet and no laptop charge... Thinking about what to do for work tomorrow as I WFH!

If you are on openreach, if you nag them a bit they supply a nice UPS unit which keeps the internet going in a power cut 😀

Dorset here 2 miles from the beach . I'm in bed and it's awful noisy . I'm anxious as on my own and worried about my house and roof . The howling and banging non stop . I dare not look outside its best I stay safe and don't see what's happening . I hate storms. When I've had fencing blown down every year it costs more and more to get it fixed .

Ginmonkeyagain · 21/01/2024 23:16

@Ihateslugs yep veteran of the 1987 storm here too (although I was only 8). We lived in an old farmhouse and I swear it swayed like a ship.

Our village was cut off to traffic for a week as every road in and out was blocked by fallen trees, we had no electricity for two weeks (I remember we all ran out to look when the power engineers arrived) and no phone for a month - just imagine that today!

AwaaFaeHom · 21/01/2024 23:16

It doesn't seem bad to me - but I lived in a place that was geared up for it. I've experienced winds where it seemed like the windows were going to blow in, you could watch the glass bowing under the pressure.

So this seems pretty normal for this time of year - but where I live now isn't nearly so prepared for high winds. There is travel disruption here and there's definitely a much higher risk of damage to property or trees falling etc than there would be if I still lived at 'home' with this same level of wind.

Bellyblueboy · 21/01/2024 23:16

Ireland - every window in my house is screaming! There are random bangs - no idea what they are!

thankfully the cat is gone and safe, asleep beside me! Lucky her- I can’t sleep with the noise

AdoraBell · 21/01/2024 23:17

Somerset, strong winds and rain. Can’t see if the garden fences are affected.

AInightingale · 21/01/2024 23:17

Northern Ireland. Wheelie bins skidding down street sideways, smallish tree down over road.

Stupid cat has snuck out. 🙄

DonutD · 21/01/2024 23:18

Greater Manchester, 2 fence panels completely broken, replacements ordered 🙄. Wind is howling, I find this weather really relaxing to go to sleep to though so looking forward to going to bed!

Nearish Canterbury SEast here.
Very windy. Trees swaying allover the place.
Moved the bins into the outside toilets as last time they blew everywhere and caused a lot of damage.
Might move the car as it’s under a tree.
Windows rattling as they’re old.
Worried about the chimney stacks too as they need repointing so hope they last. If one of them comes down it might end up in bed with us , maybe I should just move the bed a bit too.

It does sound like it’s getting worse.

I'm in whitstable and agree it's definitely breezy out there🤪

Hillsmakeyoustrong · 21/01/2024 23:19

South Devon coast. Been wild all evening but we are on a hill overlooking the sea. I've put wax earplugs in!

Iloveadrianmole · 21/01/2024 23:19

We’re in West Yorkshire too and it’s windy but not horrendous yet, I’m bracing myself though!

TheFormidableMrsC · 21/01/2024 23:20

North Herts. Sounds bloody awful. Some wheelie bins have blown down the road. I'm worried about my fence and everything in general. It's so noisy!

He last time there was strong wind I looked out and i my cat was standing on top of the shed like bloody Simba in the lion king😂.

ehe Is sleeping on an electric blanket so helpfully the heat keeps her home

Sidehustlequestion · 21/01/2024 23:21

Scottish Highlands and it’s wild here! I keep thinking our bedroom window is going to blow in. Luckily both the cat and dog don’t seem too bothered, neither does DP snoring away beside me, but it’ll keep me awake a while longer. Thankfully the flight radar has given me something to pass the time.

blackpanth · 21/01/2024 23:21

NE very windy where I am

Minymile · 21/01/2024 23:22

The Met office are advising people not to sleep near windows tonight. So be careful MNs

The Met are also calling the storm a tornado for parts of the north.

CilliansGoodGirl · 21/01/2024 23:22

London and in a high rise flat (26th floor)Lots of big windows which are shaking and rattling! The cat usually sleeps in her own bed but is tucked up tight against me looking scared, airplane ears and wide eyes.

thegreylady · 21/01/2024 23:22

Shropshire wet and wild but not scary yet and nothing seems to have been damaged. I live near a railway line and trains have been running normally. I believe it is forecast to get worse.

2jacqi · 21/01/2024 22:32

Hi @Sidehustlequestion take care with that window.

Hillsmakeyoustrong · 21/01/2024 23:24

I'm amazed there have been flights trying to land in the UK this evening. I would NOT want to be on a plane in this!!

Jadedbuthappy82 · 21/01/2024 23:26

Wiltshire, right on the northern edge of Salisbury Plain, absolutely wild here. Lots of local villages with no power, trees down everywhere and we live in an old asylum on the edge of the woods so there are some very loud, unnerving noises coming from the trees and the old building itself. Stay safe all x

Bibbitybobbitty · 21/01/2024 23:27

Wild, just south of Glasgow. Trees down & power lines on roads as result, no sign of power companies yet. Lots of fences down as well. Don't think anyone is sleeping much tonight

jay55 · 21/01/2024 23:28

The noises are so annoying. I live opposite a tube station that is above ground, going underground just after and it's creating a really loud whistling noise.

Hope everyone is able to keep warm and safe.
