London, so the least affected, in theory - but our gates and fences are rattling madly, and a couple of rubbish bins have gone rolling down the road

I do wonder how, after storms, you see massive fully grown trees blown down, pulled out at the root by the wind yet no ones parked car ever seems to move an inch in the wind. I'd have thought that some of the giant trees that I've seen blown down would weigh more than a standard sized car.

Trees are a lot more top heavy than cards!

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 21/01/2024 23:29

@BubbleBubbleBubbleBubblePop it’s to do with leverage and the centre of gravity. Cars have very low center of gravity and the wind gets little to leverage. Whereas a tree has a high center of gravity and there is a greater volume of area for the wind to ‘push/pull’ against - once it starts to sway the root system gives out and down come the tree. The root system is usually shallow and doesn’t cover the same surface area or greater area than the canopy of the tree. A bit like a tall narrow glass is easier to tip over than a short fat round one is.

They're so so much taller and wide spread though, cars are relatively low to the ground. Trees in leaf are even more susceptible as the leaves offer more resistance. Also, when the ground is saturated around the roots they have have nothing to lean into and not fall. It's heartbreaking seeing big trees go down 💔

North West Coast- about as bad as it's ever been

Glasgow - it's wild. My bedroom window is right above my bed and I'd be lying if I said i wasn't scared to sleep there. Feeling a little anxious, mainly because of how loud it is. Reading about tornado warnings hasn't helped. Stay safe all.

Can you move away from the window? x

Blacknailer · 21/01/2024 23:32

SE/central London. Bit blowy.

IHateLegDay · 21/01/2024 23:32

North West, on the coast.
The wind is quite loud but so far not as bad as I was expecting.

Bargello · 21/01/2024 23:32

Blowing an absolute hoolie in Glasgow, worst storm I can remember for several years.

Brontosaurus · 21/01/2024 23:33

South west. The power's out and not going to be back on until tomorrow evening minimum. So no heating/hot water. The rain is coming in through the living room extension roof and I doubt the fence will be there in the morning.
A few weeks ago the wind ripped out our 8ft high honeysuckle, took out part of our fence and knocked the bird boxes down. The garden's taken a bit of a beating recently.
Going to my parents tomorrow to charge phones.
All in all, bloody irritating but could be much worse.

Minymile · 21/01/2024 23:33

Is this a good time to mention the Great storm of 87………..apologies Vicar of Dibley joke

However I slept right through that and it took my Uni roof off. Hoping I’ll sleep tonight and we are all kept safe.

Jeevesnotwooster · 21/01/2024 23:33

Scotland, west coast. Really blowy. Window rattling and shaking in a way I've not seen before. Some damage outside already. Cat went out for less than a minute!

User345939 · 21/01/2024 23:33

N.Ireland. Worst I remember in my lifetime. Lots of damage everywhere and an absolutely huge number of power cuts.

Currently thinking of those working in the emergency services and the electric company who are out there right now putting their lives at risk trying to deal with such a huge number of incidents!

Hoping it passes by soon. Absolutely terrified and it feels like it could be a long night!

ShineyNewOnes · 21/01/2024 22:53

I don't like this at all. I'm feeling really anxious.
I've gone to bed to try and sleep through it but I can't. The wind is too loud. I live right next to a field with huge trees very close to my house. I've been watching the trees on and off all day trying to reassure myself that they won't fall.

You're not alone, I feel the same. Stay safe and try not to worry.

Agree. I’d move away …keep safe.

VanillaImpulse · 21/01/2024 23:35

South West - fence down and trampoline is on top of it!

DustSalad · 21/01/2024 23:08

Omg the water in my toilet is being sucked back and forth!!

Same, I thought I was gonna get sucked down the drain!

PropertyManager · 21/01/2024 23:39

It is quite surreal here, we are in a valley, and the wind is clearly blowing across the top side to side, it's very audiable, but nothing is moving down here, bushes and trees are stationery!

Imuptoolate · 21/01/2024 23:40

I hate this weather. It sounds like we are getting off lightly where I live compared to others, but it makes me so nervous! We have a massive oak tree overlooking our back garden/back of the house, which I have been anxiously watching.

I’m also nearly 41 weeks pregnant and praying I don’t go into labour tonight!!

Sidehustlequestion · 21/01/2024 23:40

Thank you @Minymile. Hopefully it survives the night!

Namechangepleas · 21/01/2024 23:41

2 fence panels down

I don't think so but I may sleep in DC's room and make a bed up on the floor just for a bit of peace of mind. I have never experienced a storm like this before

Callmemummynotmaaa · 21/01/2024 23:42

London. Part of our house has blown off and damaged neighbors car (fairly extensively). Unfortunately we are also having building works done so now I’m terrified a long drawn out legal battle will somehow find us negligent (even though the damage is due to the storm). Neighbours are being lovely, but their car is worth my entire years income, and I’m panicked. Ahh!!

HellsBells67 · 21/01/2024 23:42

Ayrshire coast here and it is horrific! Sounds like a tornado, flying objects all over the place and windows shaking. Cat has gone under my duvet, she seems really scared, poor wee thing.
