Do you wash your hands after a wee in the night?

It’s the middle of the night and you’re up for a wee. (Assume you’ve just dabbed yourself dry with loo roll, no other bodily fluids present!) Do you do a full 30 second soap and water hand wash vs after? A quick water-only rinse, and pat dry? Not wash at all and go straight back to bed? Something else completely?

I’ve often wondered what others do but too afraid to ask in real life 🫢

Don’t wash, washing hands at that time would only wake me up more and I just want to go straight back to sleep

my friends describe me as a germaphobe. No shoes in the house, no ‘outside’ clothes on/in the bed and I use an anti bacterial (biodegradable) wipe to clean my and my DH phone every night.

HOWEVER, I do not wash my hands after a wee in the night. Toilet lid is up, seat is down. No flushing. I don’t touch anything other than a bit of loo roll. If I at someone else’s house or even a hotel then yes I would wash my hands. Or if someone was ill with some kind of stomach bug then definitely I would.

I get it could be seen as a bit gross, but Jesus some of the responses are a bit OTT!

pippapipps · 15/01/2024 23:03

I get up once or twice a night and always wash my hands just a quick wash not as thorough as the daytime but always washed

I can’t believe how many people don’t wash their hands! This confirms for me that people are always dirtier than I expect them to be.

But if you keep your toilet clean and don’t actually get wee on your hands then what’s the problem? Do you always give your hands a thorough wash after you scratch your head (full of pollution and oil and skin flakes) or adjust your socks (sweat and skin flakes) or tie your shoe laces (absolutely filthy with months/years of accumulated street grime) or touch a handrail/escalator rail (don’t need to tell you it’s one of the filthiest things on the world!)

A quick clean wee and wipe in a clean toilet is much cleaner than any of those things

UnctuousUnicorns · 15/01/2024 23:04

Please, don't anyone in our 1930s house, using our only toilet hey, it was a luxury at the time ever neglect to flush it after using, no matter what time it is. I don't want to walk into our only bathroom the next morning and get a nose full of the whiff of your eight to twelve hour old piss. Just sayin'.

Vivi0 · 15/01/2024 23:04

It’s just a wee, in your own home, toilet paper between your hand and a possible wee drip.

And for many, in a toilet that no one but them use.

Perhaps some of you should consider cleaning your bathrooms more often if you have so many GERMS lurking in them.

RoseMartha · 15/01/2024 23:05

Yes i wash my hands with soap and water

baldpenguine · 15/01/2024 23:05

Noneofourbusiness · 15/01/2024 21:51

I flush and wash my hands as normal. Don't want toilet germs on my sheets Grin

To those who wash their hands because they don't want germs in their bed, do you also wash the parts of your legs that touch the toilet seat?

TheAlchemistElixa · 15/01/2024 23:06

CalmerChameleons · 15/01/2024 21:55

This! It takes hardly any time at all.

I hope the non washers aren't having sex after. 😬

Haha! And how is rubbing your sweaty fanny with a person’s sweaty (pissy, if they don’t dab) penis any less revolting than a quick wee and wipe?!

Borborygmus · 15/01/2024 23:06

ShoePalaver · 15/01/2024 22:42

but if you pee in the day as well you will see it in the day... it wouldn't be the case that the blood is only there at night

I had just two occurrences. The original one after which the doctor informed me about potential bladder cancer (when I had a pee a couple of hours later it was fine), and a second about 3 months later.

If they'd both happened at night, I would have known nothing about it.

SweetBirdsong · 15/01/2024 23:07

No. I rarely do it in the day tbh. Not after a piss. Only if I get piss on my hand - which I rarely do.

SweetBirdsong · 15/01/2024 23:08

I don't give a rat's ass what anyone thinks about that by the way. ^

Exactly!

Honestly, I thought mumsnetters were a fairly educated bunch, but the ignorance and naivety on this thread is absolutely barking mad.

It seems that most people haven't progressed beyond being eight years old and going "wee?! Ewwwwww!" 😝

Xmasbaby11 · 15/01/2024 23:08

I don’t. Don’t ask me why, think I just want to get straight back to bed without running water which starts off v cold. It does always feel a bit naughty but I allow myself not to.

In the morning I wash straight away so not like I’m going to start preparing food or anything!

ronoi · 15/01/2024 23:09

It's not my hand he is shagging.

Sex would involve all those places wee comes out of being touched (or worse) again anyway! I'm not sure squeaky clean hands beforehand would make much difference!?

(This is hypothetical for me as I don't need the toilet in the night.)

Oh jeeze, don't give them ideas!

mrlistersgelfbride · 15/01/2024 23:10

Yes , just a quick rinse , nothing major. I couldn't not wash my hands after a wee, no matter the time of day or night!

SaltedCaramelIcedLatte · 15/01/2024 23:11

Yep every time I go to the loo, regardless....disgusting not to 🤢

EbonyWood · 15/01/2024 23:11

Just to add - these people that must wash their hands before going back to bed so that wee germs aren’t transferred…I hope you aren’t putting your handbags/wallets/phones/coats etc on your bed. There are THOUSANDS of poo particles on the bottom of your handbag and your mobile has more germs than a public toilet seat.

brummyadele91 · 15/01/2024 23:11

Vettrianofan · 15/01/2024 21:45

No I don't. Too sleepy. And my moisturiser for my dry hands would then need to be reapplied....

I love how many responses this post has got 😂

Infracat · 15/01/2024 23:11

No definitely not. Straight back to bed.

TheAlchemistElixa · 15/01/2024 23:12

therealcookiemonster · 15/01/2024 22:31

it's extremely unhygienic to not wash hands after weeing (whatever the time of day). no matter the effort, small particles of urine will almost inevitably end up on hands... then transferred to bedsheets and other parts of the body eg. face unless you literally don't move in your sleep (which isn't going to happen).

I mean theoretically if you change sheets every day and have a shower in the morning it's fine. but for example touching door handles, the shower door, taps etc. etc. all will cause contamination. urine by itself is sterile, but left out is a breeding ground for bacteria.

By your logic, your knickers also have wee particles on them. Do you wash your hands after changing those? Particles of dirt are everywhere!

MustBeGinOclock · 15/01/2024 23:13

Of course. Basic hygiene!
