What’s your genuine, heartfelt life advice?

WeekWeekWeek · 15/01/2024 20:02

Feeling a little melancholy and thinking about life and all the stuff that comes with it.

What advice do you try to live by?

I’m a big believer in looking at the intention in any act, and its advice my mother gave to me that has served me well. Often if some does something wrong but was genuinely well intentioned, it’s easier to see past their mistake.

Only worry about things you have control over. You can only control your response to things out of your control

Fromage · 15/01/2024 20:17

To new parents: learn to smile and nod at the unasked-for advice, then do what you fucking like.

Forthwith · 15/01/2024 20:20

Enjoy yourself. It’s later than you think!

MrsMitford3 · 15/01/2024 20:21

Don't save things for best.
Every day is best.

Shf · 15/01/2024 20:22

No regrets. If you can learn from something, brilliant - learn from it. But you don’t have a Time Machine so there’s no point labouring over them.

DelurkingAJ · 15/01/2024 20:22

Always believe in cock up over conspiracy (ie nobody is out to get you).

And, many years ago but the best advice I ever had (from DM) ‘if the sex is bad, dump him’.

orangegato · 15/01/2024 20:24

No one is coming to help. Get up and sort it yourself.

SwankyPants · 15/01/2024 20:25

Stop worrying what strangers think of you. They probably don't even notice you.

afaloren · 15/01/2024 20:26

Never attribute to malice what can be explained by stupidity.

dephlogisticated · 15/01/2024 20:28

Somewhere deep in you, there is a place that is untouched and untroubled by the swirl of everything, beyond even your own personality - my genuine heartfelt advice is to do whatever it is that takes you to that place of silence and calm, for many it is meditation or yoga, maybe music or walking or mindfulness or being in nature. I think everyone can feel it, that radiant core that is almost wordless, or uncluttered by thoughts- tap into it! No one ever asks me for advice so I've never said that to anyone before but there it is Blush

Very good advice.

Name854 · 15/01/2024 20:29

It's ok to walk away from people who are causing you harm, even family.

Dox9 · 15/01/2024 20:30

It's OK to change your mind. It's never too late to reinvent yourself.

Feckedupbundle · 15/01/2024 20:31

Stop caring about other people's opinions of you. It really doesn't matter what other people think.
I wish I'd known this in my teens and twenties/ thirties.

JanuaryJunipers · 15/01/2024 20:31

Not advice but I always remember my father once saying to me ‘ Life is really hard, it’s a battle to survive’. I think that’s true. Also no one is going to save you, save yourself. As @orangegato said.
So many people these days think they’re owed something. It’s all someone else’s fault . Life is in your own hands.

foghead · 15/01/2024 20:32

I saw this advice a few days ago and it really resonated with me -

Look at the person in the mirror. That is a human being that needs love, attention and support. You'll spend the whole day giving your love, attention and support to other people all day long but that person there needs you too.

Monkeyfloor · 15/01/2024 20:32

Wisdom as relevant as from the beginning of human consciousness. Wonderfully put.

Pinkpinkplonk · 15/01/2024 20:35

A little flippant but, “ never show a man you can, or you’ll be doing it forever!”

ToriTheStoryteller · 15/01/2024 20:35

If I'm getting pissed off with everyone and everything, then it's probably me being the arsehole.

I'm peri-meno so i feel like this quite a lot these days so it forces me to take a step back and look at myself rather than assuming I'm the reasonable one.😂

Anjea · 15/01/2024 20:36

Eat the frog first.

If there's something you don't want to do but needs doing, do it first. Get it done.

00100001 · 15/01/2024 20:36

Those who matter, don't mind. Those who mind, don't matter.

Fuck em all if they judge you for having a slightly messy living room or not feeding your kids organic lentil soufflé every day.

ToriTheStoryteller · 15/01/2024 20:36

afaloren · 15/01/2024 20:26

Never attribute to malice what can be explained by stupidity.

Love that one too.

LampHat · 15/01/2024 20:38

“Don’t borrow grief from tomorrow” would be mine.

Blackcats7 · 15/01/2024 20:39

Don’t get married. Or if you really must then understand the financial risks and take steps to protect yourself in case of future divorce.
Might sound prosaic and depressing but I wish someone had said this to me.

Allwelcone · 15/01/2024 20:41

"To thine own self be true"

(not by me by Shakespeare I think).
