What’s your genuine, heartfelt life advice?

Feeling a little melancholy and thinking about life and all the stuff that comes with it.

What advice do you try to live by?

I’m a big believer in looking at the intention in any act, and its advice my mother gave to me that has served me well. Often if some does something wrong but was genuinely well intentioned, it’s easier to see past their mistake.

Start a pension early.
Travel.
Enjoy life now but try and save a little.
Don't compare yourself to others.

No one is coming to save you. You need to sort yourself out and stand on your own two feet, because you can't 100% rely on anyone else.

Thoughts are seeds and your mind is a garden. Choose which seeds to plant.

Caring what others think…how to rise above if the one in ‘group’ singled out for ridicule/bitching etc & weakest? I’ve never understood it, how can people not. especially if we were once an outsider.

@Inkanta

Because it's more empowering to turn it around and care more what you think of them. judge them for the bitchiness, cruelty, pettiness. Decide you will play no part in these group games. Walk away with zero interest in ever socialising with such tossers again. Make new friends who have mature, kindly attitudes to others. If it's at work, get a new job where the culture is less toxic. People who believe this empowering change is possible tend to reduce the amount of shit they put up with to almost zero.

Be careful how you treat people on your way up; as you’ll meet them again on the way back down.

Don't waste energy worrying about what might happen.
Instead use your energy making the right things happen.

Terrribletwos · 16/01/2024 18:11

To thine ownself be true!!

Be true to yourself and look after your kids with your heart and soul!

Trisolaris · 16/01/2024 18:13

Don’t take criticism from someone you wouldn’t take advice from.

Doing nothing is also a choice.

Isheabastard · 16/01/2024 18:17

I used to think the phrase ‘it is better to be kind than right’ was a good way to live.

But that led to me being taken advantage of so now it’s ‘Be the main character in your own life.’

Also don’t live with someone if they won’t share the parenting/housework/chores fairly.

Nonplusultra · 16/01/2024 18:18

Practise self compassion - it often doesn’t come naturally, and requires diligent practice build up the right muscles.

PepsiMaxLime · 16/01/2024 18:40

If in doubt, do nowt (DM used to trott this out when DSis & I were umming and ahhing over clothes in changing rooms for hours at a time!)

Don’t set yourself on fire to keep someone else warm

There’s a great line in the first Fantastic Beasts films…worrying about something only means you suffer twice.

ilovebagpuss · 16/01/2024 18:45

Don't forget about yourself, treat yourself like you would a good friend.
If something doesn't work for you, jobs or relationships don't be afraid to move on.
If possible make your own money/keep a part time job anything to keep some independence financially even in a loving relationship.

CurlewKate · 16/01/2024 20:48

Our family motto is "Don't be a dingbat." Covers most things.

girlfriend44 · 16/01/2024 21:00

Never look down on someone unless your helping them up.

Keep moving forward.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 16/01/2024 21:26

Treat yourself the way you would treat a child you love. Would you shout at them if they made a mistake after a difficult day? Insist they stay up eating junk past their bedtime? No? Then why treat yourself like that.
