I usually like the gastro ones from McCain's but they are quite pricey

On the hunt for some alternatives for a cheeky mid week easy dinner

I wish I’d never discovered M&S French fries as they are way too good for me to have the will power not to buy them. £2.50 a kilo bag. Cooked to perfection in 9-10 mins in the air fryer 😋

SheFliesLikeABirdInTheSky · 14/01/2024 12:18

ALDI.

Sharontheodopolodous · 14/01/2024 12:22

Tesco finest, triple cooked in beef dripping oven chips

Small bag but the best ones we've tried

Aldi are the next best

I just chip the potatoes, par boil for 2 mins, put them on a lightly oiled tray at 6 for 40 mins

I do this and they are 100 percent better than frozen oven chips from a bag.

Exactly, just no contest really. We only eat them with steak dinners or occasionally with fish

Needmorelego · 14/01/2024 12:51

Unfortunately once you have had those McCain Gastro ones you will never find a better replacement 😂
Aunt Bessie's are pretty good though.

Needmorelego · 14/01/2024 12:54

@New2024 has it occurred to you that some people have physical disabilities that mean they can't peel or chop potatoes, lift a heavy pan of boiling water etc ?

mumda · 14/01/2024 13:05

Aldi skin on fries

waszup · 14/01/2024 13:05

M and s fries

LenaLamont · 14/01/2024 13:07

M&S are the only ones that are properly nice rather than just adequate, but they aren't cheap.

roseberrycherry · 14/01/2024 13:08

Aldi skin on fries are definitely one of our favourites

Paw2024 · 14/01/2024 13:25

Agree with Aldi skin on, I do them in the air fryer

Cocolapew · 14/01/2024 13:27

Tesco skin on, I don't usually like oven chips but these are lovely. I do them in the air fryer.

TheseLegsDefinitelyUsedToBeLonger · 14/01/2024 13:56

Another vote for Albert Bartlett chips here 👍

BigFatCat2024 · 14/01/2024 16:23

We find the Albert Bartlett homestyle chips the best, all the others seem have had an increasingly obvious 'frozen chip' smell/taste to them which I find gross, but these ones don't

Metoo15 · 14/01/2024 16:32

Albert Bartlett home style chips. Only recently discovered them, but wont be buying any other now.

Solongtoshort · 14/01/2024 18:08

@OhpoorMe yes, they all do by mine and fridges, apparently the steak s amazing too but l don’t eat meat much.

FawnFrenchieMum · 14/01/2024 18:10

These are the best we’ve found in a long time (however now often sold out in my local store!).
They say fries but a not super thin, more like chips and say skin on but just taste crispy.

Which is great if you have time, by the time you’ve peeled them, chopped them, boiled the water, oiled them, the cooked them for 40 mins, you’re taking around an hour. That’s not a quite midweek meal ideal!

Iceland Ridiculously Crispy Skin on Fries (blue bag).

Another vote for these! Best by far and good value, really big bag for about £2.50

Warmhandscoldheart · 14/01/2024 18:14

Try Iceland ridiculously crispy range, I'm working my way through the options. Currently crinkle are my favourite 😍

ClaudiaWrinklemum · 14/01/2024 18:15

Strong Roots skinny fries (if you want skinny fries!) are unbeatable.

Chocolatecakewithsprinkles · 14/01/2024 18:17

M&S chunky chips or aldi skin on fries for us.

Iamblossom · 14/01/2024 18:34

Lidl chunky deluxe

Whilst I don’t usually do chips on weekdays, I do cook every day and some meals take more than an hour to cook. Well most meals do and I think it’s time well spent.
