I have been posting for a while now about my house being a shithole and trying to get on top of it,

Me and my family have been through alot. That has lasted years there's practically been no rest from it one thing after another. Its been absolutely hell. To the extent i could not even bath/shower on a regular basis. I had no support and was coping with everything alone its been awful. It gos pretty deep .

But things are getting better. But because its been so long my mind /emotions find it hard to believe. So I'm trying to get myself into a better mindset.

One of them things is to get my house clean and tidy and for it to feel nice to be in. I have done alot. But I also keep slipping backwards. So although it's better than one I first started I'm stuck because I keep slipping back.

I add shame photos because it pushes me to get it done and that's how I feel just now because I have basicly fucked up since Christmas and I'm angry for slipping backwards.

The picture of the really bad small room is a spare room . It's crap from my children's bedroom when I decorated it. I dumped crap in the spare room .

Set yourself a timer, put a motivating you tube video or podcast on and start cleaning, you ll be amaze of what you can accomplish in a couple of hours.

Emily1583 · 12/01/2024 21:27

Room by room. Perhaps get a bin bag and declutter any things you haven't used for the last 12 months because if you haven't used it the last year you unlikely need it.

Rainypups76 · 12/01/2024 21:36

If you're the one who did that amazing arty wall 😍I just wanted to say that I LOVE your threads, they're so motivating! Thanks for posting!

FatimaWhippedRed · 12/01/2024 21:37

It looks like you've a lovely house just a bit messy. Is it a new build? Irrelevent but just looks 'newer' than what I was expecting for you to call it a shithole lol. Well done on motivating yourself (and me to get the corner of mess I can see from where I'm sitting) though, it can be really difficult. My kitchen is a mess as Xmas has been busy but I know we will sort it soon enough so I'm just concentrating on smaller rooms for now.

One step at a time :)

peoplearepeople · 12/01/2024 22:00

You have been doing so so well.
You've had so much good advice and help already, but my best advice you might not like so feel free to ignore it if you want. 😀
Having followed most of your threads, I think it would help you longterm this year to work on just trying to change the habits of you and your family. (easier said than done I know!) It will take time as well, but before long you won't even think twice about it.
The main one being using the phrase, "instead of putting it down, put it away." I think a lot of what you see as mess is just a build up of everyday items that would take a second to put away at the time of use.
So for example the bin bags on the kitchen worktop. Take one off the roll and put the roll back in the cupboard/drawer or wherever you store them. Teach the kids to do the same. If taking snacks etc then put the rest of the packet back in the cupboard. Drinks, pour a glass and put the bottle back in the fridge. I know it might seem overwhelming for you, but working on all these things will end up making your life easier and you won't need so many of these huge clean ups that are difficult for you. I promise! This might also mean you finally get some time back to yourself instead of cleaning all the time.

It can also be handy to live by the rule that if something will take less than a minute to do (or you can change it to 30 seconds or 2 minutes whatever works for you) then just do it there and then.
Good luck! You can do this. 😀

Sweetheart, I think you’re doing really well. Most of us (me) dump crap in spare rooms!

You’re being too hard on yourself.

Its messy, not dirty! Couple of hours and a pack of bin bags will sort that right out, you’re doing great!

DyslexicPoster · 12/01/2024 22:30

It’s not that bad honestly. There’s nothing that you couldn’t chuck in a laundary basket and hide if Brad Pitt phoned up saying he would be with you in 15 minutes.

if it was me it would take two skips and two weeks. Your never going backwards. Anything at all moves you forward

Yes I semi agree. I just want the house to be clean /tidy to help me do that . I'm going to do a few basic practical things like have good sized bin in the living room so the kids rubbish stuff gos straight into a bin.

Also after dinner they are meant to scrape their plate and put them in the dishwasher. But if one child does not do it. And just leaves it on the side the other kids think it's OK for them to follow suit. Does my head Its not like they are small. Just because one does something wrong does not mean everyone else needs to. The one who gets it wrong has autism. Time he's gets to the kitchen he often forgets what he should be doing . Also if he's just having say chickem nuggets he's OK to scape his left overs . But if he has spag bol. He funds it hard to scrape it. Also his nan has different rules at her house its just left on the side and she sorts it out. So he gets confused. Either way the others don't need to copy.

Also I have to get into the habit of taking the bins out side. As when I'm on the morning school run the dogs get In the kitchen drag the bins out. All over the ground floor and first set of stairs. It's only taken me several months to realise that's what I need to do

MN often has a bad press for being judgemental, but there are lots of encouraging posts on this thread.

Waterybrook · 12/01/2024 22:43

Looks normal to me, just needs to be tidied up and won’t take long!

Shamefullhouse · 12/01/2024 22:49

Kitchen done. I took the bin out already . I do need to wash the floor. And fix my blind back up. I sorted 3 cupboards as well. I haven't done the hall like I said . I suddenly felt really drained

Kitchen looks great now. Sometimes I find it really hard to know where to start if there's a mess and cleaning needed, I get easily distracted

Rainypups76 · 12/01/2024 22:56

Woo hoo! Nice one, looks so much better! You got a round of applause from my front room just now 😀

And you've inspired me to do my dishes!

Emily1583 · 12/01/2024 22:56

That's a fab turnaround 👍🏼🙂

DancyNancy · 12/01/2024 22:59

Watch Remi Clog on YouTube.....she is super real and has nice tips for tackling when overwhelmed.

One idea she has is pick 3 things that'll make the most difference. I think her example was

1.Take a bin bag and go around picking up all rubbish and recycling.

  1. Laundry/clothes: collect any clothes /coats Lying around. Pick up dirty clothes and put in hamper. Fold and put away clean.
  1. Dishes/cups etc. collect any ware for washing around the house and wash up.

Those 3 things will make a huge difference.

Change priorities as needed

BubziOwl · 12/01/2024 22:59

Wow you've done a great job on the kitchen!! Well done!

MastieMum · 12/01/2024 23:05

Shamefullhouse · 12/01/2024 23:18

I have decided (hope I stick to it) that I'm not so worried about the kitchen anymore. Yes it gets a mess as seen but it does not take overly long to get it back to normal its litterly bin and dish washer wipe sides down. The fridge gets cleaned around once a week when I get a food shop in. Oh I think I might get some privacy screen for the window so people can't see when I'm having a bad day/week 😅

I recently listened to the audiobook "decluttering at the speed of life" by Dana K White and something that stuck with me is to tackle the most visible areas first. So kitchen, hall, living room.

If something takes less than 2 minutes to do, do it now. So putting the recycling out and putting the vacuum away. I know it helps me know where to start and once I've started I usually feel more motivated to continue. You're doing really well OP :)
