Oh and worst would be Bernard Cribbins surprisingly, he was really unpleasant

Edoublems · 06/01/2024 17:09

Craig Revel Horwood - he was playing Miss Hannigan in Annie and my kids wanted to wait by the stage door (I didn’t!)

he came out after the show and was so friendly, made sure he spoke to everyone waiting, signed programmes and did lots of selfies. My girls think he’s fab!

My mum, who has sadly passed away last month, hitchhiked in Scotland for honeymoon.
She got picked up by Prince Philip in his land-rover!
They told the papers when they got back and she was on the covers in a tartan mini skirt 😉

Your mum sounds like she was amazing!

DY10DY11 · 06/01/2024 17:17

Robert Plant lives nearby and I have seen him in the co-op a few times. Never spoken to him but he seems well thought of locally.

I was at a wedding with Caroline Catz from Doc Martin and her husband, who was the gangster involved with Mel back in the nineties EastEnders. Michael someone I think. They were both very glam and good looking. Seemed quite quiet really but they were among normals, who were drunk and northern! 😆 She is teeny. But utterly beautiful. Way more than she seems on TV.

I met Brian Adams once too and he was just a lovely bloke. Nice and polite and good sense of humour.

AnnaSewell · 06/01/2024 17:26

Kit Harington, Rose Leslie, Sandi Toksvig, Carol Vorderman.

I think there's a difference between chance casual meetings and knowing someone via mutual friends. So one of the above I've met quite a few times at parties, meals etc.

CeciledeVolangesdeNouveau · 06/01/2024 17:28

Oh, another couple.

Not a huge celebrity - I assume, I’ve avoided social media since the breakup but my ex was best friends with Joscelin Dent-Pooley who won an award for scoring a film last year. My ex was no angel but he (JDP) and his friends made my ex feel like nothing. Talented musicians and twats. Told him to break up with me the first night because “he wasn’t good enough” and NOBODY talks to someone I love like that.

I’m afraid I can’t remember her name but African American lady with breathtaking achievements speaking at CoP24. When I say breathtaking I mean I couldn’t find the breath to speak to her. I did find the breath to speak to the Green Party deputy even though I was finishing a PhD application later at the CoP - frustratingly I can’t remember her name either! Blonde lady of Australasian extraction. Super lovely and encouraging.

Final one: during my five years at her college, I didn’t manage to meet Prof Mary Beard but I wrote her a fan letter expressing my and my grandparents’ admiration for her and enjoyment of her shows etc. received a short but lovely letter back which is pinned on my wall to this day. It amazed me that someone insignificant like me could be appreciated for their words.

Musicians mainly. Irish and Scots, one or two Englishmen.
Still loving the one with curls as soft as thistledown. From afar.

Westlife were doing a meet and greet signing in my city centre when I was around 14/15. My mum and I waited outside in the freezing cold from something ridiculous like 4am. It was so busy, not everyone got in.

Towards the end they stopped signing and just let as many people in as possible to shake their hands. We were in this batch. I'll never forget it. And not for good reasons. I had loved Westlife since I was around 9/10 years old. Shane, Nicky, and Kian were talking amongst themselves in Gaelic, laughing, completely ignoring us. Just had their hands out and shaking ours whilst not acknowledging us one bit. No eye contact, no words.

Mark was the only one at the end who was shaking everyone's hand, looking us in the eye and saying "thanks so much for coming". Changed my opinion that day of them (except Mark who seemed to be the only nice and polite one there).

billydilly · 06/01/2024 17:48

Sophie Raworth (newsreader) wanted to buy our house but pulled out at the very last minute. I've never forgiven you Sophie..

HappyApper · 06/01/2024 17:55

I have met Barry Keoghan. Unfortunately he wasn't dancing naked to murder on the dance floor. But what a lovely young man and extremely charismatic. He just has it. Hard to explain. He is going to be a superstar and he deserves it.

sheeplikessleep · 06/01/2024 17:59

David Attenborough at a book signing 4 years ago. Exactly as he is on TV, calm, considered and confident. Lovely man.

Famfirst · 06/01/2024 18:11

If you watched the American trial you'd have seen that he's a thoroughly decent man. Amber Herd went out of her way to destroy him but thankfully she came across as a vindictive liar.

peachgreen · 06/01/2024 18:14

Jonny Depp stans are SO unhinged. “A thoroughly decent man”! 😂

He’s very nice, we’ve met him a few times, a friend performed with him once and we were at the rehearsals, he knew my son played a little bit of piano so he sat and taught him a few things. He then sent us a catalogue and asked us to choose a piano from it at no cost, we said thank you very much, but no thank you.

Aww. you should have accepted. It would have given him a lot of pleasure. I understand why you said no thanks, though. I would have done the same, but I wish I was the kind of person who would accept.

Nah, they both sounded like they had their moment of awfulness. Addiction ain't pretty, and it makes you do awful things.

peachgreen · 06/01/2024 18:24

@AppleCrispMacchiato That’s the absolute opposite to what my FIL – who knows the Tennants well (e.g. has stayed with them and their family on multiple occasions) says about Georgia Tennant. He has always found her to be incredibly kind and thoughtful and has praised her parenting (and FIL is notoriously reticent about compliments!). I wonder if she’s different in “work mode”. How strange. I’ve heard the exact same thing about Bertie Carvell though!

jollywhite · 06/01/2024 18:28

King Charles - back in 1996. He was lovely. Smelt divine. His suit was incredible (just oozed expensive) and he was incredibly friendly and delightful. Not at all what I was expecting. Genuinely nice man.

David Beckham - utterly gorgeous. Friendly. Flirty. Met him during the Rebecca Loos era and honestly, he definitely cheated. He was just magnetic!

David Jason - lovely man. Very down to earth and very genuine.

Kylie, back in 1988 at the height of her fame. Tiny. I mean, beyond tiny. Childlike tiny. Bit giggly. Not pretty in the slightest. Bit baffled by her appeal tbh given she literally cannot sing.

Seal - rudest person I've ever met.

peachgreen · 06/01/2024 18:29

Not mine but a friend was once staying with her auntie for Christmas and Julie Walters knocked on the door on Christmas Day asking to borrow some custard powder 😂 she invited them all in for pudding and got roaringly drunk and told the most fabulous stories apparently. Exactly as you’d want her to be!

BubbleBubbleBubbleBubblePop · 06/01/2024 18:43

I met Billy Connolly in Glasgow a good few years ago now. He was lovely, very friendly and happy to be approached by members of the public. He was also hilarious!

A ghastly woman. I am so sorry for her baby. 😓

I'm not a 'stan' of Johnny Depp or of any other celebrity. However, I can spot a narcissistic liar when I see one, and Amber Heard is one. Fake tears, ridiculous lies, and all.

I've heard bad things about Seal before. I'm also not surprised that Kylie was not that attractive in the flesh: to look that thin on camera means that you have to look severely underweight in the flesh.

Peter Andre three times in our local town . A really nice guy. Davina McCall out dog walking a few times. Always enjoy a chat .

My brother met Peter Andre and said he was a real gentleman. I met Kim Wilde briefly and she was very lovely.

@ThisIsntThe80sPat I have a little Westlife story that you might like.
I was waiting with a friend for another friend, she was working at a radio station at the time so we were on the footpath outside when Westlife walked out of the door. They obviously thought that me and my friend were fans waiting for them so came over and stood in front of us. There was an awkward silence, one of them (I think it was Mark but I’m not a fan so I’m not quite sure who is who) eventually said hello. I said hello back and said that we were just waiting for a friend. They turned and walked away.

Back in the 1990's my local mp was Donald Dewar (who became Scotlands very 1st First Minister) - he was very tall, quite swiftly spoken and reticent but nice (awful taste in suits mind - always wore brown ones).

My mum used to volunteer for the samaritans years ago and the youngish married couple from Take The High Road who were married in real life used to vunteer for them too.

Used to see James McPherson (Taggart) in my local supermarket a lot years ago (his wife is the skinniest person I have seen). Never spoke to him though.

A few years ago I saw a Scottish TV antique expert (Anita Manning) in my local Home Bargains store - felt like saying to her not sure you'd be able to find any antiques in here!!! But didn't.

Unfortunately not met anyone really famous - just local Scottish/Glaswegian ones!!!!
