Chubby Brown. He's genuinely so warm and lovely. I've found myself become quite defensive of him when people think his 'act' isn't just that, a performance. Felt like we'd known eachother for years in the short time we spoke.

Cornflowers35 · 06/01/2024 15:22

I met the actor who played Boba Fett (Jeremy Bulloch). Maybe not the biggest celebrity on here, but my mum went to school with him. We went to see him on stage in London.

He was lovely and took me on the stage.

Also met (randomly) Chris Waddle and Gazza at a game at White Hart Lane. Chris took my friend and I on a mini tour of the ground. Both lovely guys.

Helen Mirren - so rude, elbowed me out of the way physically at airport security.
Olivia Colman - was at school with her, lost touch at uni but from interviews she's exactly the same now as she was when we were ten, very funny, slightly scatty.
Oasis boys - more polite than you'd expect.
Tony Hart - such a gent.
Joshua Jackson - sat in the middle of economy class, totally unassuming.
Matt Lucas - total arsehole, just before he got really famous but when he was the Dove from Above - demanding a "proper" dressing room and rolling his eyes in disgust at everyone when he was doing a short set at a local pub comedy night.
Caroline Aherne - such a lovely lady, chatty and funny and warm, always overtipped.

backatschool · 06/01/2024 15:26

Oh and forgot Gwen Stefani, so beautiful, amazing skin, saw her but didn't speak to her in a hotel in Sweden.
And also Mick Hicknall, gross, tried to stick his tongue in my mouth at the Hacienda.

My friend always bumps into him walking his dog

Is this in Hampstead Heath or somewhere else?

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 06/01/2024 15:37

Oh, and DD3 reminded me of the time we met Vampire Weekend, back when they were just breaking out in the UK. I took her to one of their shows in London and we met them backstage, and they were so lovely, especially to DD3 who was a HUGE fan. When she went to see them in Leeds a few years later when they had got much bigger, she messaged them from outside the venue where she was queueing, asking them to get a move on as she was freezing waiting for the show to start. They sent her out a hoodie to keep her warm!

This was a good ten years ago now, but she still has the hoodie, and I still have warm feelings whenever 'A Punk' comes on the radio...

Seriously??? Roy Chubby Brown, famous for his offensive humour, high profanity, forthright social commentary and outspoken disdain for political correctness?

You'll be telling me next that the late Bernard Manning was a cuddly old grandpa who liked nothing better than a cup of tea and a digestive.

Yes I noticed there have been a few of these posts, probably journos desperate for some juicy titbit now they can no longer eavesdrop on peoples’ phone messages…

I met David Attenborough near the shores of Lake Titicaca when he was with a crew filming Life on Earth some years ago. He thought I was out of earshot, but he pointed to me and said to the crew "Get one of that dirty Llama over there, then we'll wrap up and smoke a joint."

Dirty Llama indeed! I changed my mind about him right then and there I did.

Strangely, I don't think this happened. Couldn't imagine him smoking 🚬

BrainInAJar · 06/01/2024 15:57

Britney Spears. Twice. Meet & Greet. 2017 and 2018. A tiny, very groomed doll. I'd describe her as "robotic".

Disturbia81 · 06/01/2024 15:57

@Firefly2009 Yes in Hampstead where she lives, she sees him all the time and he always smiles and says Hi

TheShellBeach · 06/01/2024 16:01

I've delivered the babies of several celeb women but I can't name them, obviously.

I was in a quiz team with Perry Fenwick and he was funny, and knew loads of the answers.

I had a long chat with Howard Goodall at a concert and he was really charming and amusing.

Orphlids · 06/01/2024 16:03

I met Rob Lowe when he came with his family to the tourist attraction I worked at. He was a bit bonkers - I had to give him a ticking off for his bad language in front of other guests, which he took on the chin very cheerfully. He seemed very happy, but almost slightly manic.

Deacon didn't say a word. Roger Taylor was perfectly pleasant but Rick Parfitt was an absolute sweetheart. Very friendly and interested. Lovely man.

I believe John Deacon has always really struggled with the fame that being in Queen brought him, and seems very introverted, so it was quite likely more that he didn't want the attention from anybody rather than thinking he was too good for an ordinary member of the public.

Even Roger and Brian don't seem that outgoing or gregarious by nature - I think they were very happy to hide in Freddie's larger-than-life shadow whilst he was alive.

I wasn't trying to be nasty. He was obviously shy. Roger was friendly it's just that Parfitt was charm personified and just overwhelmed us a bit.

Blubbled · 06/01/2024 16:18

@MaggieNextDoor I once saw someone on the Cork to Dublin train who I thought was familiar, and kept glancing at him and he would have a little smile on his face as if he knew I sort of knew who he was but couldn't quite get it! It took me a couple of years to cop on it was Pierce Morgan, but DS was a baby at the time and travelling with a baby on your own is quite demanding!
The only other celeb I can think of is the Bass player from Pulp, who I met and had a bit of craic with at Glastonbury, although I didn't believe he was who he said he was until I saw him on one of their videos months later!
Perhaps I've come across other celebs and just not copped on? Oh well..., I've usually got a lot of other things on my mind!

We met Harry Kane once. Unlike many others on the thread he is very tall 😊. He was also friendly, polite and delightful with my children.

I find footballers always look really tall in real life, I think it's because most of them are on the taller side so look normal height on TV 🤣

Actors often look small and much slimmer and it's hard to work out who is tall and who isn't due to clever camera work. I have met quite a few strictly dancers and the female dancers are so so tiny, even the ones who look slightly bigger in size are really dinky.

Graasspp · 06/01/2024 16:22

My mum, who has sadly passed away last month, hitchhiked in Scotland for honeymoon.
She got picked up by Prince Philip in his land-rover!
They told the papers when they got back and she was on the covers in a tartan mini skirt 😉

CantFindTheBeat · 06/01/2024 16:31

Ah, @Toddlerteaplease - he was soooo kind, friendly, didn't mind when I fumbled with my phone - an absolute pleasure in the West End drizzle (and he was wearing a grey overcoat over a suit - soooo handsome!!).

blahhblahhblahh · 05/01/2024 15:32

Yes, which would be why I namechanged.

To save you the bother, it was Streatham Hill and Clapham High School. In those days it was on Wavertree Road in Streatham, which is now just the junior school I believe. Had a hideous snot-green uniform back then. The former journalist Cordelia Kretchmar was in the same class.

HW's mother was an opera singer. Sang at the centenary service for the school at Westminster Abbey in I think it was 1987, though not sure on the year.

She was very pretty, good academically, one of the top dogs. I can still remember her rage once when she and a pair of her little pals grabbed my bag and started throwing it to one another so I couldn't get it, and I just started to laugh over how fucking stupid it was - and they were. Her face contorted with disgust and she hissed, "Why are you laughing?! This isn't funny for you!" I can visualise her that moment, all these years later. Silver blonde hair, slim, tall. Suddenly much less pretty - as if her personality was suddenly written all over her face.

That's actually one of the nicest stories I have of her. At least one of the rest, as I have no evidence all these years on, would be actionable. But yes, I remember her, and in my (clearly subjective) view, she was deeply unpleasant. To the point I shudder every time she's on my screen, or her name appears in print, all these decades on.

I have a secret aversion towards Hannah Waddingham even though people on MN seem to adore her. She epitomises what I dislike about celebs - all fake sincerity, big glittery gowns, all look at me and loud singing - it reminds me of the women who used to try to outsing each other at the church I was forced to go to as a child.

ShinyPrettyThings87 · 06/01/2024 16:42

@MaggieNextDoor 🤣I'm too young for Bernard but I do have vague memories of him! Chubby is just a product of his time, I suppose. Have a read of his autobiography! Though I'm thinking you'd prefer not to ☺️

Before I met him, I was wary incase he'd be abit 'cheeky' or full on, but he was so respectful and spoke very well. Both he and his manager were both just really nice and pleasant to be around. I don't have an opinion on anyone not caring for his acts but I shan't hear a bad word against him, when he's not in character! 🤣

In various jobs I’ve done I’ve met a few famous people.

Germaine Greer, very entitled, loud and difficult. The late Arch Bishop Runcie, very nice, extremely humble. Prince Edward, Prince Philip genuinely interested in our exhibitions, well researched/prepared. Princess Margaret, looked like she wasn’t at all interested. I wanted this to be because she was sad but none of us warmed to her or felt that.

Alan Rickman as lovely as everyone said he was. Paul Rhys, very luvvies and yet the most generous and kind person. Diana Rigg, a much better feminist than Germaine Greer and both glam and intelligent.

I once saw Germaine Greer in a university library being wheeled around by a student (she had broken her leg). She was treating this poor student appallingly. She was certainly punishing him for male hatred of women.

ConstitutionHill · 06/01/2024 17:01

He was in my year at school and was awful. Condescending, patronising bully. Completely up himself then. The type that makes fun of people but if you say anything he turns it round onto you. I have never watched a single programme he’s been in! Vile man.

This doesn't surprise me at all.

Duckingfun · 06/01/2024 17:04

I’ve met a few and I would say Biliie Piper is the most loveliest, down to earth, sweetest person ever. She was genuinely so nice.

ambergreenery · 06/01/2024 17:05

I'm sorry you had to go through that in your schooldays @blahhblahhblahh

That's interesting about Hannah Waddingham though because one of my old friends apparently had some sort of run in with her some years ago and absolutely detests her. Bullying was mentioned, so doesn't sound like she's changed. They recently said she hasn't aged well and seemed rather pleased about it, which sounds petty and bitter, but possibly understandable they're still upset.
