Washing on New Year's Day

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 01/01/2024 11:13

I know this sounds ridiculous but I have washing to do and all day to get it done but I read something on here years ago 'wash on New Year's Day, wash somebody away. My DM is in ill health and 82 and if something happens and I've washed I'll never forgive myself. Writing this down I know this is completely irrational but do you wash clothes on New Year's Day?

Haha I'm worrying about the same thing! Just leave it till tomorrow!

EndOfMyTether11 · 01/01/2024 11:17

No I don't, I chucked all my washing in and washed it yesterday so I can get it dry today. Grin

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 01/01/2024 11:17

Glad it's not just me! I'm at work tomorrow. DH offered to do it as he's off but I'm a bit militant 😂

I don’t normally believe in superstitions but for some reason this one gets me every year 🤣 I did a load last night that I’m drying today and I’ll do the rest tomorrow.

Noseyoldcow · 01/01/2024 11:23

Oh no! I hadn't heard of this superstition, and I was going to do washing today, I'm running out of clean knickers! Will leave it until tomorrow now......

menopausalmare · 01/01/2024 11:24

Nonsense! The only thing you'll be washing away is last year's dirt.

Globules · 01/01/2024 11:25

WTAF?!

Second load has already gone in.

Apologies in advance to whoever I'm washing away now and will with load 3.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 01/01/2024 11:25

Sorry @Noseyoldcow I feel bad for passing it on. I'm not normally one for superstitions either but this one does bother me. I hate leaving washing as well and normally stay up to date with it! I'll have to leave piles for DH tomorrow with instructions! It's not him it's me!

Don't be ridiculous! Put the washing on.

MalcolmTuckersSwearBox · 01/01/2024 11:26

I'm not remotely superstitious, 2nd load is in.

Persipan · 01/01/2024 11:28

New Year is a completely arbitrary day - sure, it's one revolution of the earth around the sun since last new year but we could say that about literally any other day of the year, too. So I can't get worked up about attributing any great significance to it, to be honest.

LangMayYerLumReek2024 · 01/01/2024 11:28

I've just put a washing on.

QueSyrahSyrah · 01/01/2024 11:29

Utter nonsense. Just put the first of a couple of loads in now.

Moier · 01/01/2024 11:29

I'm very superstitious.. got it from my Granny.
My washing was done two days ago.. rest can wait. Although l usually wash most days.

justasking111 · 01/01/2024 11:29

Dog rolled in fox poop this morning, bath mats and towels had to go in. I've never heard of this have washed whenever for 40 odd years

Circlingthesun · 01/01/2024 11:30

Never heard of this until now. I wash when it needs doing and not cos of some superstition. Life is what you make of it so just do your washing. Is it just clothes or is it bodies too? Should you have had a shower/ bath this morning??? Ive done washing in New Year's Day before now with no effects...

dementedpixie · 01/01/2024 11:38

I've done a wash. I'm not superstitious

icebearforpresident · 01/01/2024 11:41

It’s the first dry day since before Christmas where I am and I have 3 overflowing washing baskets, I’m getting it washed! Happy to take my chances with killing someone if it gets me some clean underwear!

PickledMuffin · 01/01/2024 11:41

I have never heard that saying before and I am now on load 3! 😬

I know this is irrational really 😬

I'm over 60, and never heard that before this year - this is the second thread about it.
How utterly ridiculous. Superstitions originated from when people didn't have education and information, and didn't understand why things happen. It's 2024, we're not primitive ignorants any more, we understand that people die of illness, injury or old age, not because someone did washing on the wrong day ffs.

Kazzyhoward · 01/01/2024 11:51

Absolute rubbish. I've already got one wash out on the line and another in the machine almost ready to go out. I wash on "nice" drying days regardless of silly superstitions.

Trouble is that a lot of people don't have a good education and still believe in that kind of nonsense, similar to religion. They havn't been taught logic and it shows!

Funkyslippers · 01/01/2024 11:55

If you're that much a believer in stupid suspicion, why are you assuming it's clothes they're talking about? Could be any type of washing. Hair, face, kitchen floor.....

I'd never heard it until someone posted it on FB yesterday. I've got my first load on now and about to have a shower....
