Washing on New Year's Day

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 01/01/2024 11:13

I know this sounds ridiculous but I have washing to do and all day to get it done but I read something on here years ago 'wash on New Year's Day, wash somebody away. My DM is in ill health and 82 and if something happens and I've washed I'll never forgive myself. Writing this down I know this is completely irrational but do you wash clothes on New Year's Day?

Yikes I hope not as mine is on the line!

369damnshesfine · 01/01/2024 13:04

I’ve never heard of this?!

I’ve got so much washing to do 😳

I’ve got work tomorrow and don’t think I can not clean or wash myself or my clothes today.

GigiAnnna · 01/01/2024 13:14

I just carry on as normal. I put a wash on on Christmas day too. I don't really believe in superstition and why have an overflowing wash basket when it takes seconds to put a wash on?It's not like we have to sit there over the bath tub scrubbing it all by hand like we're in the 1940s.

My husband is not superstitious at all yet he won't do any washing today. I was always told it washed away all your luck and you'd have no luck for the year.

Alalalalalongalalalalalonglonglilong · 01/01/2024 13:17

Just put a load on a few minutes ago. Never heard this expression so don't care.

@teaandtoastwithmarmite no I don't do washing on New Years Day, or wash my hair.

im astounded so many have never heard of it.

so many rude replies though, its nasty & unnecessary.

theres nothing wrong with my education or logical thinking thanks very much!

yes its superstition, but why unnecessarily poke the bear?? There are 364 other days in the year to do washing! If you're running out of knickers, how long have dirty ones been sitting in the laundry basket?

IF a child had wet them, someone had vomited (or the fig had rolled in fix poo) I'd wash the linen/clothing) without hesitation, but otherwise no, anything not washed yesterday, can wait until another day.

Thank you for this. I'm not surprised to get a few nasty comments. Says more about them than me. I've got plenty of good stuff in my life and I will just laugh at those comments. Happy new year to you!!

I suspect this is a superstition women invented back in the days of the mangle so they could have 1 less day of manual labour. I bet women invented the 'day of rest' on a Sunday too.
Good ole Mary Magdelene 😉

I reckon this too! 😅

The point about washing and laundry does make sense. I mean the dishwasher was on early and I have the dryer on drying some towels I washed yesterday. Fuck it I may put a load on lol

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 01/01/2024 13:29

Earlier not early

rainbowbee · 01/01/2024 13:31

I do this, but out of last day of Christmas holidays laziness rather than superstition. :)

LaLaLouella · 01/01/2024 13:54

yes its superstition, but why unnecessarily poke the bear??

What bear? It's a load of complete tosh. Seriously, don't do the washing if you want a day off from the drudgery but don't pretend you are doing it to save Great Aunt Mabel from death by suds....

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 01/01/2024 14:00

I've put some on. Called my mum and she said it was a superstition and she's washed on New Year's Day 😆. It's overflowing and I hate leaving it

OP posts:
FatFemale · 01/01/2024 14:02

Ive had to put some in. My teen daughter has puked all over her brand new dress 🙄

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 01/01/2024 12:04

I've never washed on NYD and in 2022 I lost my sister, my uncle and my nan.

In 2023 we lost our best friend and my dad lost his wife.

Maybe I should do some washing, clearly the superstition is backwards for me..

Sorry for your losses. To be fair I lost my dad in 2021 and couldn't recall for the life of me if I did any washing on New Year's Day that year

Load 3 has just gone in. Nothing has exploded yet 💪

ObliviousCoalmine · 01/01/2024 14:28

I'm on load three.

ShiteRider · 01/01/2024 14:32

Nope, never do it anyway but this year I definitely won’t as dad is very unwell with cancer.

I know it’s ridiculous but I don’t care.

Theunamedcat · 01/01/2024 14:36

I'm taking the day off I start the year clean empty laundry baskets clean kitchen etc in the hopes that good habits stick

I'm 48 they never do but I try yearly 😂

GingerLiberalFeminist · 01/01/2024 14:40

Utter tosh. I have a 1 year old and am on the second wash of the day :)

JenniferJupiterVenusandMars · 01/01/2024 14:47

Doomed. All doomed here.
I’ve done 3 loads of washing and the dishwasher is on too 😵‍💫😵‍💫

Beezknees · 01/01/2024 15:05

Of course it's nonsense but I don't usually do any washing on new year's day because it's a bank holiday and I've got better things to be doing!

Coconutter24 · 01/01/2024 15:44

I would edge my bets that if anything over the next 365 days happened to your DM (🤞 nothing does) who is in ill health, it will more than likely be due to the said ill health and not down to you washing your knickers on New Year’s Day haha
Ive never heard of this superstition before but have seen about 5 threads on here since yesterday about it. I’ve done 3 loads today with the weather being lovely

ganglion · 01/01/2024 16:23

Already done four wash loads today. Will feed back in a week.

Andthereyougo · 01/01/2024 17:02

I’ve never heard that superstition ( and I thought my mother knew them all 🙄) I’ve done 3 loads today……

blackheartsgirl · 01/01/2024 17:04

Nope I don’t, I’m quite superstitious anyway.

i washed clothes on New Year’s Day 2021, my dh died in July that year.

same in 2023. My mum died.

yes I know I’m absolutely ridiculous but I’m not risking it this year 😆
